Xbox’s April 2025 update introduced two separate features: buying games, add-ons and Game Pass subscriptions in the Xbox mobile app, and streaming selected digitally owned games on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S without installing them first. The features are useful, but neither means every Xbox purchase can be streamed or that a subscription is unnecessary.
Two Xbox features arrived in the same update
On April 16, 2025, Xbox announced a mobile storefront and a console expansion of its “Stream your own game” program. They solve different problems:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Xbox mobile-app purchases: lets eligible users buy games, add-ons, pre-orders and Game Pass subscriptions from an iOS or Android phone.
- Owned-game cloud streaming on console: lets eligible Game Pass members launch selected games they own through Xbox Cloud Gaming on an Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S, without downloading the local game files.
The announcement also included storage-management and interface changes, but these two features are the important ones for people who want to buy or play Xbox content away from a console.
Xbox later said that mobile purchasing had been added to the app and that its owned-game streaming collection had grown to more than 1,000 games across supported devices by December 2025. That is not a permanent guarantee for every console, region or title: Xbox says cloud availability varies by game, platform, plan and market. See the December 2025 Xbox update and the current Game Pass page for the latest qualifications.

What can you buy in the Xbox mobile app?
The Xbox app is more than a remote-control tool for an Xbox console. Where the feature is available, it acts as a mobile storefront connected to the Microsoft account used for Xbox.
Xbox’s rollout covered:
- Full games
- Downloadable add-ons and other game content
- Game Pass subscriptions
- Selected Game Pass perks or benefits
- Pre-orders, including console pre-installation options where supported
Users with a saved payment method could see a Buy button on eligible game-detail pages and complete the purchase quickly. The initial rollout began with beta users on iOS and Android before expanding more broadly through the Apple App Store and Google Play. The original beta language describes the launch phase, not the later status: Xbox’s December 2025 update confirms that mobile purchases and Game Pass subscriptions had subsequently been added, along with a dedicated Store tab.
Availability and the exact purchase interface can still differ between iOS and Android, accounts and regions. A purchase made in the app is tied to the Microsoft/Xbox account signed in there, so that is the account whose library and entitlements should be checked on the console.

At launch, Xbox required:
- An Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S console
- A Game Pass Ultimate subscription
- Ownership of the specific game on the relevant Microsoft/Xbox account
- A title included in the supported cloud-playable owned-game catalog
- A supported region and a sufficiently stable internet connection
Ownership alone is not enough. Only selected games have the necessary cloud rights and platform support. Xbox’s current service information also states that cloud-playable games not included with Game Pass must be purchased separately.
How to stream a game you own from an Xbox console
- Open My games & apps.
- Select Full library.
- Open Owned games.
- Find a title displaying the cloud badge.
- Select the game and choose Play with Cloud Gaming.
You can also narrow the list by opening Filter > Ready to play > Cloud gaming. The cloud badge and filter are the practical checks that matter: if the title does not appear there, Xbox is not currently offering that ownership-based cloud route for the account, platform and region.
For a supported purchase, Xbox said the Store could sometimes present a direct option to stream after buying the game. That is conditional. The title must be cloud-playable, the purchase must be associated with the correct Xbox account, and the applicable subscription and regional requirements must be met.
Cloud Gaming versus Remote Play
| Feature | Cloud streaming of an owned game | Xbox Remote Play |
|---|---|---|
| Where the game runs | Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure | Your own Xbox console |
| Must the game be installed? | No, for the cloud session | Generally yes |
| Available library | Selected cloud-supported games | Games installed on your console |
| Main benefit | Avoids a large download and saves console storage | Provides remote access to your installed console library |
| Subscription situation | Requires the applicable Game Pass entitlement | Uses a different remote-play setup and requirements |
Remote Play does not turn an installed game into a cloud game. It streams the output of your Xbox to another device, so the console must be powered appropriately, connected and normally have the game installed. It can therefore reach more of your installed library, while owned-game Cloud Gaming is limited to titles that Xbox and their publishers support in the cloud.

In April 2025, reporting also noted that Remote Play could be accessed through xbox.com/remoteplay in a supported browser, while Remote Play access had been removed from the dedicated Xbox app at that point. Microsoft’s app and web flows can change, so the current web experience should be treated as authoritative.
What does “owning” a game mean?
For this feature, ownership generally means a digital license associated with the Microsoft/Xbox account. It does not mean that every game connected to that account can be streamed.
- A physical disc does not automatically make a title eligible for cloud streaming.
- A game bought on another platform or store is not automatically an Xbox entitlement.
- A Game Pass title is not permanently owned just because it was downloaded or played through the subscription.
- An add-on may require its base game and may not be separately cloud-playable.
- Backward compatibility does not guarantee cloud support.
Cloud rights are separate from ordinary purchase rights. A game can be available to buy and install locally while remaining absent from the owned-game cloud catalog.
Why a purchased game may have no cloud option
If Play with Cloud Gaming is missing, the most likely explanation is that the title is not currently supported. Other possibilities include:

- You are signed into a different Microsoft account from the one that owns the game.
- Your Game Pass plan does not include the applicable cloud entitlement.
- The game is unavailable for cloud play in your region.
- The title has publisher, licensing or platform restrictions.
- The console or Xbox app needs an update or restart.
- You own a physical copy rather than the digital entitlement recognized by the cloud service.
- The game or add-on is associated with another store or account ecosystem.
Troubleshooting checklist
- Confirm the signed-in account under Owned games.
- Look for the cloud badge beside the title.
- Apply Filter > Ready to play > Cloud gaming.
- Check the current Xbox Cloud Gaming catalog and the title’s regional availability.
- Confirm that the active Game Pass plan is eligible.
- Restart or update the console and Xbox app if Store or cloud controls are missing.
- Install the game locally if it is owned but not cloud-playable.
Does streaming save storage and time?
Yes, for the cloud session. You can avoid downloading a large game before trying it, which is particularly useful on an Xbox Series S or any console with limited free space. It can also provide a faster way to start a newly purchased game while deciding whether to install it permanently.
Streaming does not eliminate all storage use. The console still needs space for system data, saves, captures, apps and any games you install locally. Nor does it provide offline access: a cloud session depends on Xbox service availability and a stable connection.
Advertised broadband speed is only part of the experience. Latency, Wi-Fi congestion, routing, local network stability and server availability can affect responsiveness and image quality. Competitive players and anyone with unreliable or capped internet may prefer a local installation.
Is Xbox’s feature worth using?
It is a good fit if you have limited storage, a stable low-latency connection, an eligible Game Pass plan, or want to try a supported purchase before committing to a full installation. It is also useful for buying games or pre-orders while away from home and preparing a console where pre-installation is supported.
Best Value
Local installation is better if you need offline play, maximum consistency, the best possible local image quality and responsiveness, or the game is not in the cloud catalog. It is also the better long-term option if you do not want to maintain a recurring Game Pass subscription.
Remote Play is better if the game is installed on your Xbox and you want access to that broader installed library without relying on Microsoft’s owned-game cloud catalog. The trade-off is that the game runs on your console, not in the cloud.
Current catalog and plan caveats
Xbox reported more than 100 supported owned games during the April 2025 console rollout and more than 1,000 owned games across supported devices by December 2025. Those figures should not be read as a fixed list for every device or market. Titles, cloud rights, plans and regional availability can change.

The April 2025 console announcement specifically identified Game Pass Ultimate as the requirement at launch. Check the current plan details before subscribing, particularly if your goal is to stream a game you already bought rather than play a game included in the catalog.
In short, Xbox’s update makes buying from a phone easier and makes selected owned games faster to access on console. It does not convert the entire Xbox purchase library into a cloud library: the cloud badge, account, plan, region and title support determine whether the feature works.
