To make custom Roblox hair, model a hairstyle in a 3D program such as Blender or Maya, import it into Roblox Studio, set it up as an avatar accessory, then fit and test it. If you want to sell it on the Marketplace, uploading and publishing have separate eligibility and fee requirements, so check Roblox’s current rules before submitting.
Choose the hair accessory category
Start by deciding what the item is. Roblox categorizes a complete hairstyle as Hair. A partial style, such as bangs or braids, may fit Hair, Hat, or Face depending on its design and Roblox’s category definitions; facial hair belongs in Face. Check the current Marketplace asset categories and Marketplace policy rather than assuming a decorative piece will be accepted in a particular category.
Hair can be rigid or layered. The technical limits below are for rigid accessories, not a universal recipe for every kind of hair item.
Model the hairstyle in a 3D application
Roblox’s avatar-asset workflow uses third-party 3D software for modeling, with Blender and Maya named as examples. Blender is free and open source; Maya is subscription-based. Choose the tool you can work in comfortably—Roblox’s documentation does not claim that one produces better hair than the other. Build an original design and refer to Roblox’s specifications while shaping it, rather than waiting until export to check whether it fits. Roblox does not prescribe a single modeling method for hair, so the choice of techniques is yours.
Meet the rigid accessory requirements
If you are making a rigid hair accessory, Roblox’s current specifications require a single mesh with watertight geometry and a maximum of 4,000 triangles. Hair uses the HairAttachment point to position the item on the avatar. These requirements are specific to rigid accessories; consult the full rigid accessory specifications for the shape dimensions, which vary by body scale.

Do not apply one set of dimensions to every avatar scale. Design against the relevant specification and plan to check the fit in Studio.
Import and fit the accessory in Roblox Studio
- Export your model from the 3D application. The rigid accessory workflow documents
.fbxand.gltfas import formats. - Import the model into Studio. Follow Roblox’s rigid accessories workflow to bring the custom model into the project.
- Set it up as an accessory. Use Studio’s accessory and avatar setup tools to process the model and place it using the hair attachment point.
- Fit and inspect it on an avatar. Adjust the model or its placement if needed, then repeat the import and setup steps until it fits as intended. Roblox’s first rigid accessory tutorial walks through the process.
Test, revise, and prepare for variations
Roblox describes accessory creation as an iterative process that requires testing. Check how the hairstyle looks and fits on relevant avatar body scales and alongside other accessories; those are useful creator checks, not a guarantee of compatibility with every avatar or experience. Make adjustments in your 3D application or Studio and test again before treating the asset as finished.

Uploading and selling are separate decisions
You can create and set up an asset without deciding to sell it. Publishing on the Marketplace adds eligibility and fee requirements. Roblox’s current policy says uploading requires ID verification or a linked parental account; publishing and keeping an item on sale requires a qualifying Roblox Plus or Premium 1000/2200 membership under the policy text available when checked on October 8, 2026. Review the live Marketplace policy before submitting, because rules can change.
The current fees and commissions page lists an 80 Robux upload fee per submission, with a different fee for submissions using an emissive mask. The first rigid accessory tutorial also refers to a publishing advance. Verify the applicable charges on Roblox’s live pages before you upload; neither Marketplace approval nor sales are guaranteed.
