To improve DeSmuME’s normal-speed performance, start with the official stable release, remove demanding visual enhancements, and test frameskip and renderer settings one at a time. If you mean speeding up gameplay with fast-forward, that is a different feature: it raises the emulator’s execution speed and may drop audio or video output rather than making emulation itself lighter.
Start with the official stable release
Use the version linked from the official DeSmuME downloads page. At the time of the available project information, that page linked stable release 0.9.13. The FAQ still names 0.9.11 as current, but that version statement is stale; follow the downloads page instead.
Before changing performance options, note their current values. Change one setting at a time, then check the same part of the game. This makes it easier to identify a useful change and undo one that causes visual glitches or compatibility problems.
Reduce the work DeSmuME is doing
Check your computer’s power and cooling
On a laptop, switch to a performance-oriented power mode while playing. If performance has worsened over time, check for dust buildup or a cooling problem; overheating can limit how quickly the CPU runs. The DeSmuME FAQ characterizes the emulator as “mostly CPU intensive and less GPU intensive,” so a graphics-card upgrade is not the first thing to try.

Turn off visual enhancements
Disable HD scaling, magnification filters, and other video filters, then compare performance. The FAQ specifically warns Linux users that scaling the window above 1× can substantially hurt performance. Menu names and locations differ among DeSmuME ports, so use the documentation for your operating system rather than assuming one menu path applies everywhere.
Test frameskip carefully
Try a frameskip value of 1 and see whether the game runs more smoothly. The FAQ says this helps many games, but frameskip can make motion less smooth, and some 3D games may flicker or work poorly with it. If a game looks worse or behaves incorrectly, return frameskip to its previous value.

Compare the renderers
Switch between OpenGL and SoftRasterizer if both are available in your build. Neither is universally faster: the better choice depends on the game and computer. Compare them in the same scene and keep the one that performs better without introducing rendering problems.
Try advanced options only if needed
JIT and Advanced Bus-Level Timing
If the simpler changes are not enough, test JIT and disabling Advanced Bus-Level Timing, one at a time. The FAQ notes that either change can break some games, so check the game after each adjustment and restore the original setting if you encounter glitches or failures.

Audio settings
If audio processing appears to be part of the slowdown, the FAQ suggests disabling Advanced SPU Logic and trying Dual SPU Sync/Async. Turning sound off entirely is another possible measure, but it is more disruptive. Test audio changes separately so you can tell whether they help.
Options and controls vary by operating system and port. Consult the DeSmuME documentation for the build you use; do not assume that instructions for Windows, Mac, or Linux GTK map to the same menus.

Know whether you need normal speed or fast-forward
If a game cannot maintain its intended speed, the settings above target the underlying performance problem. Fast-forward is different: it raises or removes the speed limiter so DeSmuME can execute faster when the host computer has enough capacity. It does not make the emulator do less work per frame; at higher speeds, displayed video or audio frames may be dropped.
The FAQ documents Windows defaults of “-” and “=” to adjust the speed multiplier, and holding Tab to disable the limiter. Mac and Linux GTK use different controls, and these defaults can vary with configuration. Consult the documentation for your port. If you want a particular fast-forward multiplier or a fixed frame rate during fast-forward, the available sources do not establish a universal setting for that; the limiter controls are not the same as improving normal-speed performance.

When hardware is the bottleneck
After trying the software and system checks, persistent slowdowns may point to a CPU limitation. Because DeSmuME is primarily CPU-intensive, a faster CPU can matter more than simply having more CPU cores, according to its FAQ. Consider a hardware change only after checking that the computer is not power-limited or overheating and that the tested settings are appropriate. A suitable CPU depends on your system’s socket and platform; the available project guidance does not support recommending a particular processor.
The FAQ also lists a 3.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo or equivalent and 2 GB of RAM among its recommended configuration, alongside operating systems dating back to Windows Vista SP2 and OS X 10.6.8. These are legacy project recommendations, not current purchasing requirements or measured benchmarks. The project sources provide no current benchmark that would justify promising a specific speed increase from any setting or upgrade.
