The reliable way to reduce HTTP requests is not to chase a target number. Measure the page, remove assets it does not use, load the remaining files only where needed, cache repeat responses, and choose bundling based on the site’s HTTP protocol. Browser and page caching can eliminate repeated transfers, while HTTP/2 and HTTP/3 often make aggressive file concatenation unnecessary.

What an HTTP request means in WordPress
When a visitor opens a WordPress page, the browser requests the HTML document and then requests referenced stylesheets, JavaScript, images, fonts, video posters, embeds and other resources. A request may be served from the browser cache, a CDN or reverse proxy, the web server, or the WordPress/PHP stack. Those paths have very different costs.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Reducing requests therefore has two parts:
- Reduce unnecessary work: do not request files, embeds or remote data that the page never uses.
- Make necessary work cheaper: let caches answer repeat requests and deliver static files without invoking PHP and the database.
A page with more small files can be faster than a page with one oversized bundle on HTTP/2 or HTTP/3. Conversely, on HTTP/1.x, connection and request overhead can make combining small files worthwhile. The correct goal is a faster waterfall with fewer transferred bytes and less render-blocking work, not the lowest request count at any cost.
Measure the page before changing it
Start with a clean baseline. Open the browser’s developer tools, choose the Network panel, enable recording, and reload the page. A performance audit can provide a second view, but the waterfall shows the WordPress-specific causes you need to fix.

Record the useful fields
- Request URL and resource type (CSS, JavaScript, font, image, iframe or API call).
- The initiator, which identifies the plugin, theme file or document that caused the request.
- Status code, transferred bytes and total resource size.
- Whether the response came from memory or disk cache, a CDN or reverse proxy, or the origin server.
- Timing, including queueing, connection, download and render-blocking time.
- Whether the resource is needed for the initial viewport, a later interaction or a page feature that is absent.
Save the waterfall for a representative game article, a category or archive page, a search result and any page with galleries or embeds. A single homepage is not a sufficient baseline because plugins often load different assets by template.
Test both visitor states
Run the same checks while logged out and while logged in. Full-page caches commonly bypass authenticated sessions, and an administrative toolbar or user-specific request can change the waterfall. Record the cache status in both cases so a change that helps anonymous visitors does not break the editing experience.
Separate first view from repeat view
Use an empty-cache reload to evaluate the first visit, then reload normally to evaluate a repeat visit. First-view performance exposes payload and render-blocking problems. Repeat-view performance shows whether browser, page and edge caches are actually working.
Remove requests that the page does not need
Build an asset inventory
Sort the waterfall by type and look for files that appear on every page even though their feature exists only in one place. Common examples on a gaming site include a review-rating script on pages without ratings, a lightbox library where no gallery is present, a shop widget on editorial pages, duplicate font families, and social or video embeds that are not visible until a reader interacts.
Check the initiator chain rather than deleting a file by name. A seemingly unused stylesheet may contain the layout required by a block, while a third-party script may be injected by a widget rather than the plugin you first suspect. Remove duplicate libraries and embeds only after confirming that no template or interaction depends on them.
Load a feature only where it exists
Use the page context to decide whether an asset should be enqueued. A gallery script can be limited to posts that contain a gallery; a review calculator can be limited to the review post type; and a map or video player can be loaded only when its block is rendered. This prevents the browser from making requests for absent features.

Keep the condition close to the feature’s registration so future template changes do not silently re-enable site-wide loading. Test singular pages, archives, search, 404 pages and mobile layouts after each condition.
Use WordPress’s enqueue system correctly
WordPress documents wp_enqueue_script() and the related style APIs as the supported way to register and print assets. Enqueueing keeps dependencies, loading order and duplicate prevention under WordPress’s control. The version argument also gives a changed file a new URL, allowing long-lived browser caching without serving stale code. See the WordPress Theme Handbook guidance on including assets.
Example: register a script with a file version
add_action( 'wp_enqueue_scripts', function () {
$path = get_template_directory() . '/assets/js/gallery.js';
$url = get_template_directory_uri() . '/assets/js/gallery.js';
if ( is_singular( 'post' ) && has_block( 'core/gallery' ) ) {
wp_enqueue_script(
'site-gallery',
$url,
array(),
filemtime( $path ),
true
);
}
} );
In this example, the file is requested only for a singular post containing the gallery block. filemtime() changes the query-string version whenever the file changes, so a visitor can retain a cached copy until an update is deployed. If your build process already produces a version, pass that stable build value instead.
Register styles and dependencies, too
Use wp_register_style(), wp_enqueue_style() and explicit dependency arrays for CSS. For JavaScript, declare libraries that must load first instead of printing unmanaged script tags in a template. Avoid enqueuing the same library under multiple handles; duplicate handles or different URLs can produce two requests for equivalent code.

Removing a plugin’s asset globally can break a block, shortcode or checkout flow. If you dequeue, target the exact page context and verify the rendered feature at desktop and mobile widths. A safer sequence is to identify the handle in the initiator chain, reproduce the page without it in a staging copy, and then apply a narrow condition rather than a site-wide removal.
Browser caching reduces repeat transfers
Set cache headers for stable static files such as versioned CSS, JavaScript, fonts and images. The WordPress Advanced Administration Handbook identifies Cache-Control with max-age, Expires and entity tags as the relevant mechanisms. Browser caching can reduce server load by avoiding a new download; when validation is required, the browser can receive a lightweight 304 Not Modified response instead of the full file. See WordPress’s cache guidance.

Use long freshness periods only when the URL changes whenever content changes. A version argument or content-hashed filename provides that cache-busting behavior. If a file keeps the same URL after edits, a long-lived cache can preserve old CSS or JavaScript and create hard-to-reproduce bugs.
Check the headers in the waterfall
- Confirm the response includes the intended
Cache-Controlpolicy and, where used,Expires. - On a repeat load, verify that the browser reports a cache hit or that the server returns a validation response.
- Change a versioned file, reload, and confirm that the URL changes and the new bytes arrive.
- Do not cache personalized HTML or user-specific responses as if they were public static files.
Use full-page caching for generated HTML
A page cache stores a generated HTML response and serves it without rebuilding the page through the complete PHP and WordPress stack. That can avoid repeated PHP execution and database queries even though the browser still requests the document itself. Static caches, reverse proxies and CDNs can serve cached content before the origin is reached.

After publishing or updating a game article, purge the affected URL and any archive or feed that contains it. Test cache purges from an anonymous browser before assuming readers see the new content.
Full-page caching does not remove every subrequest. A cached HTML document can still reference uncached fonts, images, analytics, embeds or API calls, so inspect the complete waterfall after enabling it.
Consider a CDN or reverse proxy
A CDN can deliver images, JavaScript, CSS and theme files from edge locations. A reverse proxy or host-provided cache can answer requests before PHP and the database are reached. The WordPress Hosting Handbook describes these layers and static delivery patterns at its performance guidance.
Questions to answer before enabling one
- Which paths are cached, and which cookies or authorization headers bypass the cache?
- How are purges triggered after a theme, plugin or article update?
- Are logged-in, preview and personalized pages excluded?
- Does the layer preserve the cache headers you set for versioned assets?
- Can you inspect cache-hit and cache-miss headers in the browser?
Do not treat a CDN as a substitute for removing unused assets. It can shorten delivery distance and offload origin work, but it still has to deliver every file the page requests.

Decide whether to combine CSS and JavaScript
File concatenation is protocol-dependent. On HTTP/1.x, combining several small files can reduce connection and request overhead. HTTP/2 and HTTP/3 multiplex requests over a connection, allowing many resources to arrive in parallel; the older “combine everything” technique may therefore be unnecessary. WordPress explains this distinction in its optimization handbook.
| Situation | Potentially useful approach | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| HTTP/1.x with many small static files | Combine compatible CSS or JavaScript files | Connection overhead, transferred bytes and render-blocking time |
| HTTP/2 or HTTP/3 with independent, cacheable assets | Keep files separate when they are efficiently multiplexed | Parallel delivery, cache hits and whether any file blocks rendering |
| Pages with different feature sets | Build smaller route- or feature-specific bundles | That a gallery, review widget or embed does not pull unrelated code |
| Frequently changed code mixed with stable code | Keep cache boundaries separate | Whether a small edit invalidates a large bundle |
After each bundling change, compare the empty-cache and repeat-view waterfalls. Check total transferred bytes, render-blocking time, cache behavior and JavaScript errors. A single large bundle can increase the first render and force visitors to download code for interactions they never use. Conversely, leaving dozens of tiny files untouched may be wasteful on an HTTP/1.x connection.
Cache repeated outbound API calls
A WordPress page may make an outbound HTTP request for game ratings, release data, a feed or another remote service. If that response changes infrequently, requesting it for every visitor adds latency and can exhaust the remote service’s limits. WordPress’s HTTP API guidance recommends caching such responses and identifies the Transients API as an available built-in option; see the Common APIs Handbook performance page.
Transient pattern
$key = 'game_release_data_' . $game_id;
$data = get_transient( $key );
if ( false === $data ) {
$response = wp_remote_get( $endpoint, array( 'timeout' => 5 ) );
if ( ! is_wp_error( $response ) && 200 === wp_remote_retrieve_response_code( $response ) ) {
$data = json_decode( wp_remote_retrieve_body( $response ), true );
set_transient( $key, $data, HOUR_IN_SECONDS );
}
}
Choose an expiration that matches how quickly the remote data changes. Handle timeouts, non-success status codes and malformed responses without overwriting a good cached value. Purge the transient when an editor changes the associated game or when you know the remote record has been updated. Do not cache private or user-specific API responses in a shared transient.

A practical reduction workflow
- Capture a baseline. Record request count, transferred bytes, cache status, render-blocking resources and key timings for logged-out and logged-in views.
- Classify every request. Mark each as required above the fold, required after interaction, conditionally required, duplicate or unnecessary.
- Remove duplicates first. Eliminate repeated libraries, redundant font weights and obsolete embeds before changing bundling.
- Apply conditional enqueues. Load each feature’s CSS and JavaScript only on templates or blocks that use it, using WordPress enqueue APIs and a version value.
- Cache static files. Set suitable cache headers and verify cache hits or validation responses on a repeat visit.
- Enable page caching. Exclude authenticated and personalized responses, then test publishing and purge behavior.
- Evaluate edge delivery. Add a CDN or reverse proxy when its cache rules and invalidation process fit the site.
- Test bundling against the protocol. Compare separate files and bundles on the site’s actual HTTP/1.x, HTTP/2 or HTTP/3 connection.
- Cache remote responses. Store infrequently changing API data with an expiration and failure handling.
- Re-test after each change. Keep the change only when the waterfall, bytes, cache behavior or render-blocking profile improves without breaking a feature.
When a request reduction causes a problem
Styles or scripts are missing
Inspect the console and the Network panel for a 404, a dependency loaded in the wrong order or a condition that is false on the affected template. Restore the dependency declaration or broaden the condition to the exact pages that use the feature.
Visitors see old CSS or JavaScript
Check whether the URL changed after deployment. Add a version argument or update the asset filename, purge page and edge caches, and then test an empty-cache and repeat load. A long cache lifetime without URL versioning is the usual cause.

Logged-in pages look different from public pages
Compare cache headers and page-cache bypass rules. Exclude authenticated sessions and cookie-dependent output from shared page caches, then verify the feature while logged in.
A bundle is slower than separate files
Check the protocol, bundle size, render-blocking time and repeat-view cache behavior. On HTTP/2 or HTTP/3, restore independent files or split the bundle by feature if multiplexing and cache granularity perform better.

Remote data still triggers many API calls
Confirm that the transient key is stable, that a successful response is stored, and that the expiration is not effectively zero. Log failures separately so a timeout does not replace a valid cached response with empty data.
What to prioritize on a WordPress gaming site
Start with templates that attract the most readers, then work through expensive features. A review page may need its rating and gallery assets; an archive may need neither. A video-heavy article may benefit from deferred embeds and cached poster images, while an interactive guide may require a script only after the reader opens a map or calculator. These are decisions to make from the initiator and template context, not from a universal request-count target.
Keep a short change log containing the page tested, the asset or cache rule changed, the protocol observed, and the before-and-after waterfall. This makes regressions traceable when a plugin update introduces a new site-wide file.
How to judge success
- Unnecessary requests disappear from the waterfall on the pages where the feature is absent.
- Required assets arrive with correct dependencies and no console errors.
- Repeat views use browser, page, CDN or reverse-proxy caches as intended.
- Static-file changes invalidate predictably through versioned URLs.
- Logged-in and personalized pages remain uncached or correctly varied.
- Outbound API calls occur once per cache interval rather than once per visitor.
- The chosen file structure improves transferred bytes, render-blocking time or cache behavior for the site’s actual protocol.
There is no universal percentage or millisecond improvement to promise. Results depend on asset weight, cache hit rate, protocol, visitor geography and hosting. Measure those variables on your own templates, keep the changes that improve the waterfall, and avoid optimizations that merely make the request counter smaller.
