To enable WooCommerce backorders, first turn on stock management under WooCommerce > Settings > Products > Inventory. Then edit each product or variation, open Product data > Inventory, enable stock management, and set Allow backorders to Allow, but notify customer or Allow. The first option accepts the order and displays a backorder warning to the buyer; the second accepts it without that customer-facing warning. Administrator backorder emails are controlled separately by the global inventory setting.

What a WooCommerce backorder does
A backorder lets a customer purchase a product after its available stock has reached zero. WooCommerce records the order while the item is unavailable instead of blocking checkout. The order can then remain open until the next shipment arrives and the item can be fulfilled.

Backorders are not enabled by one universal switch. Stock management must be active globally, and the permission to sell past zero is set on each simple product or variation. You can manage inventory at the parent product, variation, or combined level for variable products.
Choose the right backorder mode
In Product data > Inventory, WooCommerce provides three documented choices:

Both allowing modes permit stock to move below zero. The difference is the customer notification at purchase: Allow, but notify customer is the explicit disclosure option. Neither mode, by itself, sends a later “your item is back” message; that requires your own communication process or a restock-notification extension.
Prepare global inventory settings
Before changing an individual product, configure the store-wide inventory behavior:

- Enable stock management.
- Set the hold-stock duration if unpaid orders should reserve inventory only for a defined period.
- Configure low-stock and out-of-stock notification options, including the recipients and threshold values used by your store.
- Enable the backorder notification option when staff should receive an email after an order creates a backorder.
- Choose whether out-of-stock products are hidden from the catalog.
- Select the stock-display format customers should see on product pages.
- Save the changes.
The global backorder email is an administrator alert, not a replacement for the product-level customer notice. WooCommerce describes the control as enabling a “backorder stock notification email when an order creates a backorder.” Verify the recipient address and notification threshold before relying on it for purchasing or customer-service work.
Enable backorders for a simple product
Use these steps when a product has one stock pool, such as a single physical game, controller, or boxed collector edition:

- Go to Products in the WordPress dashboard and edit the product.
- In the Product data panel, select the Inventory tab.
- Enable product-level stock management.
- Enter the current stock quantity. Use the quantity that is physically available now, not the quantity you expect in the next shipment.
- Open the Allow backorders dropdown.
- Select Allow, but notify customer to accept the order while clearly telling the buyer that it is unavailable, or select Allow to accept it without that WooCommerce customer-facing warning.
- Review the product’s stock status, low-stock threshold, and purchase limits if those controls are present in your installation.
- Update the product and place a controlled test order using a non-production payment method or a private test product.
When the available quantity reaches zero, a product configured for either allowing mode remains purchasable. A product set to Do not allow instead stops customers from ordering once stock is exhausted.
Manage backorders for variable products
Variable products can represent editions, platforms, regions, colors, storage capacities, or other selectable variations. WooCommerce supports three inventory approaches:

- Parent-level management: the variable product uses a shared stock pool.
- Variation-level management: each variation has its own quantity and backorder behavior.
- Combined management: the catalog structure and stock rules are coordinated across the parent and individual variations according to the configuration used in the product editor.
Set a rule on one variation
- Edit the variable product and open the Variations section.
- Expand the variation that needs a separate rule.
- Enable stock management for that variation.
- Enter its stock quantity and, where needed, its low-stock threshold.
- Set Allow backorders to Do not allow, Allow, but notify customer, or Allow.
- Save the variation and update the parent product.
A variation can carry its own quantity, backorder setting, and low-stock threshold. If that variation allows backorders, it remains available in the variation selector even when the store is configured to hide out-of-stock products. This prevents a backorder-enabled edition from disappearing merely because its current quantity is zero.
Check the selector and stock message
Test every affected attribute combination on the storefront. Confirm that the intended variation can be selected, that the displayed stock wording matches your policy, and that the checkout still succeeds when the quantity is zero. A parent-level rule may not produce the same result as a variation-level rule, so test each combination that customers can buy.

Out-of-stock visibility is a separate decision
The catalog visibility setting controls whether shoppers can find an out-of-stock product or variation; it does not decide whether checkout is permitted. Hiding out-of-stock items can remove them from customer view even when you would prefer to collect future orders.
There is an additional consequence for restock signups: WooCommerce’s back-in-stock notification workflow cannot collect a signup when the store hides out-of-stock products or variations. If customers need to join a waitlist, disable the out-of-stock hiding option for the relevant catalog items, or provide a separate visible signup route.

- Accept orders now: keep the product or variation visible and use an allowing backorder mode.
- Collect interest without accepting payment: keep the item visible and use a restock signup workflow instead of enabling backorders.
- Remove the item completely: hide out-of-stock products, understanding that shoppers cannot select the item or join the built-in restock form while it is hidden.
Notify customers and staff at the right time
Immediate customer disclosure
Select Allow, but notify customer when the buyer should know during the purchase that fulfillment depends on incoming stock. Put any known lead-time or shipment information in the product description, availability text, and order communications you control. The setting itself supplies the backorder notice; it does not establish a delivery date.
Administrator alerts
Enable the global backorder notification setting under WooCommerce > Settings > Products > Inventory when staff should receive an email each time an order creates a backorder. Check the configured recipients and mail-delivery setup, because an enabled checkbox does not guarantee that a message reached an inbox.

Later restock communication
Neither allowing mode automatically sends a “now available” message when stock is added. Maintain a backorder queue in your order-management process, or use a dedicated back-in-stock extension when customers need a formal waitlist and automated notifications.
Use a centralized policy for many products
Editing dozens of products individually can create inconsistent rules. WooCommerce’s official Backorder Manager extension is designed for centralized policies. Its documented capabilities include:
- Global and category-level scopes.
- Role-based restrictions.
- Per-product opt-outs for exceptions.
- Catalog-visibility overrides.
- Stock-status normalization.
- Runtime application to the storefront, REST and Store APIs, and customer-facing AJAX requests.
Use a centralized policy when the same backorder rule applies across a catalog or customer role. Keep product-level exceptions for items with different suppliers, release restrictions, or fulfillment commitments. After applying a policy, test both the storefront and any connected API or app, because the extension can affect more than the standard product page.
Use a restock waitlist instead of accepting orders
If your store does not want to create unpaid or delayed fulfillment obligations, use Back In Stock Notifications rather than enabling backorders. The official extension supports signup forms for guests and logged-in customers, notification queues, filtering by customer, product, or variation, CSV export, catalog prompts, and manual notification creation.

When a waitlist is the better fit
- The replenishment date is unknown or highly uncertain.
- You cannot reserve inventory for every order placed at zero stock.
- You want to measure demand before deciding how much to reorder.
- Customers should be notified when stock returns but should not be charged or promised fulfillment now.
Keep the out-of-stock product or variation visible for the signup form. Once stock is restored, review the notification queue, confirm the quantity available, and send notices according to the fulfillment capacity you can actually support.

Product queries through wc_get_products expose the same stock-status vocabulary. When synchronizing a game catalog with a marketplace, warehouse, or custom storefront, map the API values explicitly and test zero-quantity products so an integration does not accidentally convert an allowed backorder into an unavailable item.

Test and troubleshoot a backorder setup
The product cannot be purchased at zero stock
- Confirm global stock management is enabled.
- Open the product or variation’s Inventory tab and verify that stock management is enabled there.
- Check that Allow backorders is not set to Do not allow.
- For a variable product, inspect the exact variation selected by the test order; a parent setting may not override a variation-specific restriction.
- Check whether a catalog or policy extension is overriding the product rule.
The item is missing from the catalog
- Review the global out-of-stock visibility option.
- For a variable product, inspect the variation’s backorder setting. A variation that allows backorders should remain selectable even when out-of-stock hiding is enabled.
- If a restock signup is required, make the product or variation visible; hidden items cannot collect the built-in signup.
Staff did not receive a backorder email
- Verify that the global backorder notification setting is enabled.
- Confirm the recipient address and the site’s outgoing email delivery.
- Place a test order that actually reduces stock to zero and creates a backorder; an ordinary in-stock order will not trigger the same event.
The API reports the wrong state
Inspect both the numeric quantity and the status value. Use no, notify, or yes for the backorder field, and outofstock, instock, or onbackorder for stock status. Check the parent and variation records separately when the product is variable.
Operational checklist
- Global stock management is enabled.
- Hold-stock, low-stock, out-of-stock, and backorder notification settings match the fulfillment process.
- Each backorderable product or variation has stock management enabled.
- The chosen mode is deliberate: Allow, but notify customer for an immediate warning, or Allow without that warning.
- Out-of-stock visibility is compatible with ordering or waitlist goals.
- Variable-product variations have been tested individually.
- Staff recipients can receive the administrator backorder email.
- Customers have a defined communication path for replenishment or delay updates.
- API integrations map WooCommerce’s backorder and stock-status values correctly.
- A test order confirms the storefront, checkout, order status, email, and inventory behavior.
Recommended decision
For most stores that can replenish a product but need to disclose the delay, enable stock management and choose Allow, but notify customer on the relevant product or variation. Turn on the global administrator notification so staff can plan fulfillment. If you cannot promise fulfillment, keep the item visible and collect signups with a back-in-stock workflow instead. Use centralized policy controls only when the catalog size or customer-role rules make individual product settings impractical.
