If the rate repeatedly drops to zero while your drive is busy, the delay may be installation or file verification—not your internet connection.
Start with these fixes
- Check Epic’s status page. If Fortnite, the Epic Games Store, or download and installation services are degraded, local changes will not solve the problem.
- Remove the launcher’s speed limit. In Epic Games Launcher, select the profile icon in the top-right, choose Settings, scroll to Download Settings, and uncheck Limit Download Speeds. Restart the launcher before trying again. Epic also documents this option through Download Manager → Download Settings → Download Speed. See Epic’s download-limit instructions.
- Restart Epic Games Launcher and your PC. Close the launcher completely, including its system-tray process, then reopen it. A restart can clear a temporary launcher or Windows networking problem.
- Stop competing traffic. Pause Windows Update, Microsoft Store downloads, cloud synchronization, browser downloads, other launchers, torrents, streams, livestreaming, backups, and large downloads on other household devices.
- Use Ethernet if possible. Epic recommends a wired connection for slow launcher downloads. Ethernet can eliminate Wi‑Fi interference and weak-signal problems, but it cannot exceed your internet plan or the available Epic server speed.
- Disable an active VPN or proxy temporarily. These can add latency or route traffic through a congested path. Do not remove a proxy on a school, work, or managed PC without asking the administrator. Epic’s connection guidance covers proxy troubleshooting at this support page.
First determine what “slow” means
Convert Mbps to MB/s
Internet plans are usually advertised in megabits per second (Mbps), while launchers commonly show megabytes per second (MB/s). Divide the advertised Mbps figure by approximately eight for a theoretical maximum. A 400 Mbps connection, for example, works out to about 50 MB/s before Wi‑Fi overhead, network congestion, routing limits, server capacity, and other losses.

This is only a ceiling. Gigabit internet does not guarantee gigabit-speed Fortnite downloads because the slowest part of the complete path may be your Wi‑Fi link, router, ISP route, Epic’s servers, the launcher, your CPU, or your storage drive.

Separate downloading from installing
Fortnite updates may download data and then unpack, patch, verify, and rewrite large files. During those phases, the network rate can fall sharply—or show 0 B/s—while the launcher is still working.

Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc and inspect the Processes and Performance tabs. High disk activity with little network activity usually points to installation, verification, antivirus scanning, or another storage bottleneck. Do not repeatedly cancel and restart the update; that can waste downloaded data and trigger more verification.
Compare Epic with another download
If every download is slow, investigate Wi‑Fi, your router, Windows networking, or your ISP. If only Epic is slow, focus first on Epic’s status, the launcher limit, its cache, VPN or proxy routing, and Epic-specific connectivity. A speed test or another large, reputable download at the same time of day can help separate these cases.
Improve the local network connection
If Ethernet is unavailable, use the 5 GHz or 6 GHz Wi‑Fi band when your PC is close enough to the router. Move away from a weak-signal area, mesh-node dead zone, or crowded 2.4 GHz channel. A router reboot can clear a temporary fault, but it cannot increase the speed supplied by your ISP.

If Fortnite downloads normally through the hotspot but slowly on your home connection, the likely problem is the home router, Wi‑Fi, ISP route, filtering, or DNS path. Epic recommends trying another connection where applicable in its slow-download troubleshooting guidance.

Clear the Epic Games Launcher web cache
Cache clearing can fix a damaged launcher state, although it is not guaranteed to increase the maximum speed of a healthy connection. It does not delete Fortnite itself.
- Exit Epic Games Launcher completely. Open the system-tray overflow area, right-click the Epic Games icon, and choose Exit.
- Press Windows + R, enter
%localappdata%, and press Enter. - Open
EpicGamesLauncher, thenSaved. - Delete any of these folders that are present:
webcache,webcache_4147, andwebcache_4430. - Relaunch Epic Games Launcher and retry the download.
If Windows says a file is in use, confirm that the launcher has fully exited in Task Manager before trying again. Epic’s current procedure is documented here.
Reset Windows networking and flush DNS
Use this sequence when the PC has a stale or corrupted local network state. It resets Windows networking; it does not increase your paid bandwidth.

- Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Run:
netsh winsock resetRestart the computer. Then open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdnsnetsh winsock reset resets the Windows Winsock catalog. The release and renew commands refresh the PC’s DHCP address, while ipconfig /flushdns removes cached DNS records. Epic’s documented sequence is available in its Windows DNS troubleshooting guide.
If you use custom network settings, record them first. If connectivity worsens, restart the PC and router, then restore any manually configured network or DNS settings.
Should you change DNS?
Epic recommends flushing DNS and, where appropriate, trying a public DNS service. DNS mainly translates domain names into server addresses. It can help when an ISP resolver is stale or malfunctioning, but it normally does not turn an already-established file transfer into a dramatically faster one.

On a managed network, ask the administrator before changing DNS.

Use storage and Task Manager to find installation bottlenecks
A nearly full, slow, failing, external, or heavily used drive can make an update take much longer even when the internet is fast. An SSD is generally preferable for unpacking and patch processing, but moving Fortnite to an SSD cannot increase Epic’s server throughput.
In Task Manager, check whether the installation drive is near 100% active time while network usage is low. Also check available free space: large updates can require temporary working space beyond the visible patch size. Close unrelated applications that are using the same drive.
Antivirus and Windows security scanning may temporarily increase disk activity while new files are written. Do not permanently disable antivirus protection to chase speed. If a security-software test is unavoidable, make it temporary and controlled, restore protection immediately, and use the vendor’s supported exclusion procedure rather than disabling security broadly.

Try this only after the reversible steps above. Epic documents the following configuration as an advanced troubleshooting adjustment; it is not a guaranteed performance upgrade.

- Close Epic Games Launcher completely.
- Click Start, type
%localappdata%, and open it. - Navigate to
EpicGamesLauncher → Saved → Config → Windows. - Back up the original
Engine.inibefore editing it. - Add this block, following Epic’s instructions for your installed launcher version:

RetryTime=0.5- Save the file and reopen the launcher.
If the launcher becomes unstable or the download worsens, restore your backup or remove only the block you added. Do not assume that community-recommended registry edits, priority changes, Defender shutdowns, or extra undocumented settings are proven or universally safe. Epic’s documented adjustment is described in its support article.
When administrator mode or reinstalling is appropriate
Running the launcher as administrator can help with permission-related errors, such as failures to write or access installation files. Right-click the Epic Games Launcher shortcut and select Run as administrator. This does not inherently make a normal download faster, so use it when the symptoms suggest permissions or “access denied” problems. Epic includes this step in its launcher troubleshooting guidance.
Before reinstalling, update the launcher, clear its cache, check disk space, review proxy or VPN settings, and test another connection. Reinstallation is a last resort: Epic warns that its Windows reinstall process removes installed titles. Do not use it casually if Fortnite or other games are already installed.
What not to change
- Fortnite’s Matchmaking Region: this controls gameplay matchmaking, not the Epic Games Launcher’s download mirror. Changing it is not a download-speed fix. See Epic’s matchmaking-region documentation.
- VPN settings as a default speed boost: a VPN may help an unusual routing problem, but it often adds overhead and can make downloads slower.
- Security protection: do not permanently disable Windows Defender, antivirus, or firewall protection.
- Third-party download accelerators: they generally cannot control the Epic launcher’s authenticated transfer and may create security or account risks.
- High process priority: it is not a proven general solution and can make Windows less responsive.
Two-minute troubleshooting checklist
- ☐ Check Epic’s current service status.
- ☐ Uncheck Limit Download Speeds.
- ☐ Restart Epic Games Launcher and the PC.
- ☐ Stop competing downloads, streams, sync tools, and updates.
- ☐ Try Ethernet or a stronger 5 GHz/6 GHz Wi‑Fi connection.
- ☐ Disable a VPN or proxy, unless a managed network requires it.
- ☐ Check Task Manager for disk activity and confirm adequate free space.
- ☐ Clear the Epic launcher web cache.
- ☐ Reset Winsock and flush DNS.
- ☐ Test a phone hotspot or another internet connection.
- ☐ Use the documented
Engine.iniblock only with a backup and rollback plan.
When to contact Epic
Contact Epic Support if the issue continues across networks after removing the throttle, clearing the cache, and checking local storage; if the launcher repeatedly fails or loops; or if Epic’s services appear degraded. Include your Windows version, launcher version, connection type, approximate download rate, whether another connection works, and whether Task Manager shows network or disk activity.
