In Bedrock Edition, the Unbreaking enchantment only reduces durability loss; the official sources cited here do not establish a regular-player command that makes an ordinary item permanently unbreakable. The right method therefore depends on your edition and version.
Java Edition: apply the Unbreakable component
Java’s minecraft:unbreakable item component prevents an item from losing durability when used. Mojang documented the component in Java snapshot 24w09a, saying, “If set, the item will not lose any durability when used.” See the official snapshot notes.
The component replaced the older Unbreakable boolean item tag. That historical change matters because item-command syntax differs across Minecraft releases: a command written for an older NBT format should not be assumed to work in a component-era version, or vice versa. The snapshot notes document the component, while Mojang’s Java 1.21.5 release notes provide later context. Check that any command you use matches the exact Java version you are playing.
Bedrock Edition: know what Unbreaking does
In Bedrock, the Unbreaking enchantment reduces the durability damage an item takes; the official Microsoft Learn enchantment guide does not describe it as eliminating durability loss. Treat it as a way to make gear last longer, not as a guarantee that it can never break.

Bedrock creator route: data-driven items
For creators, Bedrock’s scripting API documents an unbreakable property on the durability component. This is a mechanism for data-driven items, not a standard command that an ordinary player can paste to modify a held item. See Microsoft’s ItemDurabilityComponent documentation.
The cited official sources do not establish a current Bedrock command for making an ordinary item permanently unbreakable. Avoid treating the creator API property as proof that such a player command exists.

Before using a command
- Confirm whether you are playing Java or Bedrock Edition.
- For Java, match the item syntax to your exact game version; do not mix older NBT examples with component-era syntax.
- For Bedrock, distinguish an enchantment that reduces wear from a creator feature that can set an item’s durability behavior.
