In both Java and Bedrock Edition, upgrade each Diamond armor piece at a Smithing Table using one Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template and one Netherite Ingot. The template requirement was added with the 1.20 Smithing Table overhaul, so recipes showing only Diamond armor and a Netherite Ingot are outdated.
Materials for a full Netherite armor set

The same Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template works for helmets, chestplates, leggings, boots, tools, and weapons. You do not need a separate template for each item type.

1. Make or obtain Diamond armor
If you are crafting the armor yourself, the recipes require:

- Diamond helmet: 5 Diamonds
- Diamond chestplate: 8 Diamonds
- Diamond leggings: 7 Diamonds
- Diamond boots: 4 Diamonds
A complete set therefore costs 24 Diamonds when crafted from scratch. The Diamond armor can be damaged or enchanted. The Netherite upgrade preserves its current durability, enchantments, custom name, and existing armor trim. See the Minecraft Wiki armor guide for the underlying armor information.

2. Craft Netherite Ingots
First mine Ancient Debris in the Nether and smelt it in a furnace, blast furnace, or another compatible smelting block to produce Netherite Scraps.
4 Netherite Scraps + 4 Gold Ingots = 1 Netherite IngotThe recipe is shapeless, so the ingredients can be placed anywhere in the crafting grid. Four armor upgrades require 4 Netherite Ingots, normally totaling 16 Netherite Scraps and 16 Gold Ingots. The official Netherite Ingot guide covers the material recipe.
3. Find a Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template
Netherite Upgrade Smithing Templates are found in Bastion Remnant chests in the Nether. They can appear throughout bastions, while a Treasure Room Bastion contains two templates.

/locate structure minecraft:bastion_remnantThis syntax works in current Java and Bedrock versions. On Bedrock, consult Microsoft’s /locate command documentation; Minecraft also provides an official command guide.
4. Duplicate the template
To obtain four templates from one original, duplicate it once using:
- 1 Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template
- 7 Diamonds
- 1 Netherrack
Arrange the ingredients like this:

Diamond Netherrack Diamond
Diamond Template EmptyThe recipe produces two templates and consumes the original, giving you a net gain of one. The practical minimum for a full set is one found template, one duplication craft, 7 additional Diamonds, and 1 Netherrack.
5. Craft a Smithing Table
Use 2 Iron Ingots and 4 wooden planks to craft a Smithing Table. The planks can be any wood type and may be mixed.

6. Upgrade each Diamond armor piece
- Open the Smithing Table.
- Place a Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template in the template slot.
- Place the matching Diamond armor piece in the equipment slot.
- Place one Netherite Ingot in the material slot.
- Take the Netherite armor from the output slot.
There is no separate Upgrade or Craft button. Taking the valid output completes the operation. Repeat these steps for the helmet, chestplate, leggings, and boots.

What Netherite armor improves
Compared with Diamond armor, Netherite armor offers higher durability, higher armor toughness, and knockback resistance. Each Netherite armor piece contributes knockback resistance; in Java Edition, a complete set provides 40% knockback resistance. A dropped Netherite armor item also does not burn in fire or lava. The official Netherite article and the Minecraft Wiki knockback reference provide further mechanics details.
Netherite armor does not make you fireproof
Netherite gear’s resistance to fire and lava applies to the item when it is dropped, not to the player wearing it. You can still take damage from fire, lava, magma blocks, and other heat sources. Use Fire Protection, Protection, Fire Resistance potions, or another safety strategy when entering dangerous areas.

Armor trims are separate
A Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template is different from an Armor Trim Smithing Template. The upgrade changes Diamond equipment into Netherite equipment; an armor trim only adds a visual pattern. Trim materials, including Netherite Ingots, are cosmetic and do not increase armor protection.

You can upgrade armor and trim it, but the two operations require separate uses of the Smithing Table. The Minecraft Wiki armor trim guide explains the distinction.

The Netherite recipe does not appear
Check that all three slots contain the correct items: a Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template, a Diamond armor piece, and a Netherite Ingot. A regular Smithing Template or an Armor Trim template will not work.
A Netherite Ingot alone does nothing
This is expected in current versions. The old two-item recipe was replaced by the 1.20 Smithing Table system, which requires the Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template.

No. The standard Netherite Upgrade recipe accepts Diamond equipment. It does not convert lower-tier armor into Diamond or Netherite armor.

Why did my template disappear?
Templates are consumed during Smithing Table upgrades. Duplicate enough templates before upgrading multiple pieces.
Does the upgrade cost experience?
No. A normal Netherite upgrade does not require experience levels. Anvil work performed before or after the upgrade may still have an experience cost.
