It works in both Minecraft: Java Edition and Minecraft: Bedrock Edition: place it in your hotbar, select it, then hold your device’s normal Use Item control.
How to use a Spyglass
- Place a Spyglass in your hotbar.
- Select it.
- Use the normal Use Item control for your platform.
- Release the control when you want to stop zooming.
The Spyglass shows a circular scope overlay and narrows your field of view while you look through it. Its zoom strength is based on your current FOV setting; according to Minecraft’s official explanation, the Spyglass uses one-tenth of the configured FOV.

Controls by platform
- Java Edition with keyboard and mouse: hold the Right Mouse Button. See the official Java hotkeys reference.
- Bedrock Edition with keyboard and mouse: use the button assigned to Use Item/Place Block.
- Touch controls: tap the target location to use the item. Minecraft’s touch-control documentation describes this interaction.
- Controller: press the controller’s normal Use Item button, usually the right trigger. Your control may differ if you remapped the buttons.
How to craft a Spyglass
You need:
- 1 Amethyst Shard
- 2 Copper Ingots
Place the ingredients vertically in a crafting grid, with the Amethyst Shard above the two Copper Ingots. The recipe was introduced with Caves & Cliffs Part I and remains unchanged. The official Spyglass guide shows the recipe.

/give @s minecraft:spyglassThis command works in both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition. On Bedrock, @s targets the command executor, while you can replace it with a player name or another valid target selector. Microsoft’s Bedrock /give documentation lists cheats as a requirement.
How to make the Spyglass zoom more or less
The Spyglass’s apparent strength depends on your FOV. A lower FOV makes the view look more zoomed in but reduces peripheral vision; a higher FOV shows more of the surroundings but makes distant objects appear smaller.

Java Edition
- Press Esc.
- Select Options….
- Select Video Settings….
- Adjust FOV.
Do not confuse the main FOV slider with FOV Effects. In Java Edition 1.21.11 and later, Mojang reorganized Video Settings and moved FOV Effects to:
- Press Esc.
- Select Options….
- Select Accessibility Settings….
- Adjust FOV Effects.
FOV Effects controls how much gameplay effects—such as sprinting and other movement-related effects—can alter the field of view. It is separate from the main FOV setting. This change is documented in the Java Edition 1.21.11 release information.

Bedrock Edition
- From the title screen, select Settings.
- Open the Video tab.
- Adjust FOV.
Bedrock’s default FOV is 60 degrees. To narrow the view, Minecraft’s official support guidance recommends selecting a value below 60 degrees. Bedrock also has FOV Can Be Altered By Gameplay, which controls whether gameplay effects can change the FOV. See the official Bedrock video-settings guidance.
Why is my Spyglass not zooming?
If the circular Spyglass overlay appears but the scene does not magnify in Java Edition, check whether FOV Effects is set to 0%:

- Open Options….
- Select Accessibility Settings….
- Find FOV Effects.
- Raise it above 0%.
Mojang tracked this behavior as bug MC-275249. Also confirm that you are holding a Spyglass and using the correct Use Item control for your device.
Is there a default zoom key in Minecraft Java Edition?
No. Unmodified Java Edition does not include a universal vanilla zoom key such as C, Z, or R. The built-in method is to hold the Use Item control while holding a Spyglass. Tutorials claiming that C is Minecraft’s default zoom key are generally referring to a mod, particularly older OptiFine setups.

How to zoom without holding a Spyglass
Java Edition players can install a client-side zoom mod to add a dedicated keybind and, depending on the mod, adjustable magnification. For example, Just Zoom supports selected recent Java versions and several 1.21 releases, with a default zoom key of Z or Y depending on keyboard layout. You can change the key in Minecraft’s Controls settings.
Client-side zoom mods generally do not need to be installed on the server, but the mod must support your exact Minecraft version and mod loader. A Fabric mod is not automatically compatible with Forge or NeoForge, and version support can change as Minecraft updates. Check the mod’s current compatibility information before installing it.
FOV, Spyglass, and render distance are different
- FOV: changes how wide the camera’s view is. Lowering it can make distant terrain look larger, but it also removes peripheral vision.
- Spyglass: provides Minecraft’s dedicated magnified viewing mode.
- Render Distance: controls how far terrain is loaded and rendered. Increasing it does not optically magnify distant objects.
For ordinary vanilla play, use a Spyglass when you need to inspect a distant location, mob, structure, or landmark. Adjust FOV only if you prefer a permanently narrower or wider camera view, and use a compatible client-side mod if you specifically want a key-held zoom without equipping the Spyglass.
