It may improve visuals in some titles, but the effect varies, some games are unaffected, and the setting can increase power use or change how a game handles touch and controllers.
How do I make old Switch games look better on Switch 2?
Turn on Handheld Mode Boost in the console’s system settings. It applies to Nintendo Switch software played in handheld mode, not Nintendo Switch 2 games. Nintendo’s instructions are on its Spanish-language support page, which uses the English feature name.

- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
- Select System.
- Scroll to Nintendo Switch Software Handling.
- Select Handheld Mode Boost to turn it on.
Nintendo describes the setting as making Nintendo Switch software run as if played in TV mode while the console is undocked. That can change a game’s visual presentation, but Nintendo does not promise a specific resolution increase or improvement in every game.
What changes, and what does not?
The setting changes how compatible Nintendo Switch software behaves in handheld play; it is not a general graphics switch for games made for Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo says results depend on the game and that some software is unaffected. It does not publish a quantified visual uplift for individual titles, so a guaranteed resolution or frame-rate improvement cannot be assumed.

TechRadar reported on Switch 2 system software version 22.0.0 that the feature runs original Switch software with a docked graphics preset. Its writer described a clearer image in Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope. That is one publication’s observation of one game, not a result guaranteed for other titles.
What are the trade-offs?
Nintendo cautions that Handheld Mode Boost may increase power use and may affect software operation. In particular, it can make some on-screen instructions inaccurate or prevent them from working correctly, disable touchscreen use for Nintendo Switch software, and cause attached Joy-Con 2 controllers to be treated as a Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller. Nintendo advises disconnecting Joy-Con 2 before using other controllers.

- More power use: Nintendo warns of increased power consumption; it does not give a battery-life estimate for the setting.
- Touchscreen changes: Nintendo Switch software may not be able to use the console’s touchscreen while the feature is active.
- Controller changes: Attached Joy-Con 2 may be treated as a Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller. Disconnect them before using other controllers, as Nintendo advises.
- Game-specific behavior: On-screen instructions or functions may not behave as expected.
Will it work with every old Switch game?
No. Nintendo says Nintendo Switch 2 supports Nintendo Switch software generally, but some games may not work or may not be fully compatible. Handheld Mode Boost does not fix game incompatibility, and compatibility does not mean a title will show a visible improvement with the setting enabled. Check Nintendo’s game compatibility information for the specific title.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is this the same as Switch 2’s 4K or HDR setting?
No. Handheld Mode Boost concerns Nintendo Switch software running on the undocked console. Nintendo’s 4K and HDR guidance is about TV output when docked. 4K output is limited to supported games and compatible TVs, and is capped at 60 fps; HDR support varies by game. Nintendo defines HDR as “a technology that enables a wider range of brightness (a dynamic range).” HDR requires an HDR-capable TV and can be configured for always enabled, compatible software only, or disabled. When should you try it?
It is worth testing if you play Nintendo Switch games handheld and prefer a potentially improved image over the possibility of increased power use or altered touch and controller behavior. If a particular game relies on touchscreen controls, attached Joy-Con 2, or instructions that stop working correctly, turn the setting off for that play session. For Nintendo Switch 2 games, this is not the relevant graphics setting.
