Most Nintendo Switch games work on Nintendo Switch 2, but not every title or feature is fully compatible. Some games may not run, some start but have in-game issues, and others need original Switch Joy-Con or accessories for particular modes. Nintendo’s compatibility checker is the best place to confirm an individual game because its lists can change as testing and updates continue.
What “not compatible” means on Switch 2
Nintendo cautions that the two consoles have different hardware, so some Switch games may not be supported or fully compatible. That warning covers several different situations; it does not mean the Switch library as a whole has been left behind.

- Does not start or is unsupported: Nintendo’s compatibility guidance identifies titles that may not be playable.
- Starts, but has in-game issues: A game may launch while some functions do not work as intended.
- Needs older hardware or accessories: A game can run but require an original Switch Joy-Con or a compatible accessory for specific features.
Nintendo has reported no issues in basic compatibility testing for more than 15,000 Switch games, according to Tom’s Guide’s 2026 report. “Basic compatibility testing” is not a guarantee that every mode, accessory, or function has been fully tested.
Games Nintendo lists with in-game compatibility issues
Nintendo of Europe publishes a regional list of games that start on Switch 2 but have some in-game compatibility issues. Examples in the list include Alan Wake Remastered, Factorio, and Overcooked! All You Can Eat. Nintendo lists the publisher for each entry and marks the issue as being investigated.

This is a snapshot of Nintendo’s Europe list, not a complete worldwide roster or a declaration that the games are permanently broken. Some entries are sold only in certain regions, and the page can change. Check Nintendo’s European in-game issue list and the compatibility checker for your region before relying on a particular title.
Games and modes that need original Switch Joy-Con
Original Joy-Con can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but Joy-Con 2 lack certain physical connections or features used by some Switch games. Nintendo’s UK guidance gives these examples:

Some Nintendo Labo cardboard accessories also cannot accommodate the Switch 2 console or differ from the original setup. Depending on the kit, that can mean an altered or reduced experience rather than a game that fails to start. Nintendo’s UK compatibility guidance describes these controller and accessory limitations.
There is a charging wrinkle if you need old Joy-Con: they cannot attach to Switch 2. Nintendo says you need an original Switch or a compatible charging grip or stand to charge them. See Nintendo of America’s Joy-Con pairing and charging guidance.

How to check whether a specific Switch game works
- Open Nintendo’s Switch game compatibility guidance for your region.
- Search for the game by title in Nintendo’s live checker or browse the relevant issue list.
- Read the qualification, not just the result: check whether the concern is launch support, an in-game function, or a controller/accessory requirement.
- If the game depends on original Joy-Con or a physical accessory, confirm you have the needed hardware and a way to charge it.
- Check again before buying or migrating. Nintendo says future testing and updates may change the number of supported titles.
Digital games and save data are separate questions
A digital game license moving between consoles does not move its save data with it. Nintendo says save data remains on the original console when a virtual game card is loaded on a different system. Virtual game cards can be played offline after loading and are available to all users on that console; an online license requires an internet connection to start and is limited to the purchasing account.
