If Steam says a game is uninstalled even though its files are on your drive, add the existing Steam library folder under Settings > Storage, then start the game’s installation from Steam so the client can check those files. If the game is missing from your Library entirely, first check that you’re using the right account, clear Library filters, and look in View > Hidden Games.
First, identify what Steam is failing to find
There are two different problems that can look alike. If the game appears in your Library but Steam labels it uninstalled, focus on whether Steam can see the library folder containing its files. If the game does not appear in the Library at all, check account and visibility settings before changing anything on disk.
- Listed as uninstalled: The account recognizes the title, but Steam may not be connected to the library location or may need to inspect the existing files.
- Missing from the Library: The game may be attached to another account, filtered out of the current view, or hidden.
If the game is listed as uninstalled
Reconnect the library that contains the game
- Find the Steam library folder that contains the game. Steam’s standard Windows example is
C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappscommon, but your library may be on another drive or in a location you chose. - Open Steam and go to Settings > Storage.
- Use the plus control to add the existing Steam library location. Add the library folder Steam should manage, rather than moving the game folder blindly.
Steam says installed games should appear after you add an existing alternate library. Its support page for games appearing uninstalled describes this recovery process: Steam Support: Installed games appear as uninstalled. Older guides may direct you to Settings > Downloads > Steam Library Folders; the current support material uses Storage.
Ask Steam to inspect the existing files
If the library is connected but Steam still labels the title uninstalled, select the game in your Library and start the installation. Choose the library location where its existing game folder is stored. Steam may recognize and use files already there as the installation process runs. This does not guarantee that every local file will be accepted or that no data will need to download.

Repair only if Steam reports an installation or update problem
For an installation or update error, Steam’s general troubleshooting guidance includes restarting Steam, clearing the download cache, repairing the library folder in Settings > Storage, and verifying game files. Verification is for a title Steam can already find in the Library; it is not a way to reveal a title missing from the account’s list. See Steam Support: Update & Installation Issues.
If Steam still cannot recognize the files after you add the correct library and try the installation process, Steam’s article on uninstalled games recommends reinstalling the affected game.

If the game is missing from your Library
- Confirm you are signed into the Steam account that owns or activated the game. Steam notes that games missing from a previously activated library often mean a different account is open.
- Clear Library filters that could exclude the title.
- Open View > Hidden Games. If the game is there, use Manage > Remove from Hidden to restore it to the visible Library.
These checks address Library visibility, not whether Steam recognizes files on a drive. Steam’s instructions are at Games Are Missing from my Library.
Check the drive only if the library is on external storage
Make sure an external drive is connected and available when Steam starts. Steam warns that external drives can disconnect unexpectedly and recommends installing Steam and games on an internal drive. Treat that as relevant when a library drive is unreliable, not as a required step for every missing-game problem.

What a non-Steam shortcut can and cannot do
Adding a non-Steam game creates a shortcut in the Library; it does not make Steam manage the game’s updates or establish Steam ownership. It is not a method for reconnecting an existing Steam installation. See Steam Support: Add Non-Steam Games to a Library.
