To make the “feed the fish” setup, first solve the yellow cross and check that exactly one yellow corner sticker faces up. Keep yellow on top, turn the whole cube until the fish points toward the front-left, then perform R U R′ U R U2 R′. The phrase describes how to hold the cube for this case; it is not a separate algorithm.
When to use the fish position
This is a beginner-method step for orienting the last-layer corners. Do it after the yellow cross is complete. Count only the yellow stickers on the four upper-face corners: use the fish position when exactly one is yellow. If zero or two are yellow, use the corresponding alternate hold instead of forcing the fish setup.
How to point the fish
- Hold the cube with yellow on top and the yellow cross complete.
- Look at the four upper-face corner stickers and confirm exactly one is yellow.
- Turn or regrip the whole cube until the yellow corner and cross form a fish pointing toward the front-left. The fish’s nose should be able to eat from your left hand.
Rubik’s Cube’s solution guide describes this as holding the cube so “the fish can eat out of your LEFT hand.” This instruction refers to the one-yellow-corner case.
Perform the moves
Keep the front face in front throughout the sequence. In standard cube notation, R turns the right face clockwise, R′ turns it counterclockwise, U turns the upper face clockwise, and U2 turns the upper face halfway around.

- R — turn the right face clockwise.
- U — turn the upper face clockwise.
- R′ — turn the right face counterclockwise.
- U — turn the upper face clockwise.
- R — turn the right face clockwise.
- U2 — turn the upper face halfway around.
- R′ — turn the right face counterclockwise.
Follow the order exactly; do not rotate the front face or reverse the sequence midway.
Check the top and repeat if needed
After the sequence, inspect the upper face. If all four corner stickers are not yellow, count the yellow upper corners again, orient the cube for the matching case, and repeat as necessary. One pass is not guaranteed to finish the corner orientation.

Common mistakes
- Starting before the yellow cross is complete.
- Using the fish position when zero or two upper corners are yellow.
- Confusing the fish’s setup orientation with the move sequence itself.
- Changing which face is in front or altering the move order during the algorithm.
- Assuming the top must become all yellow after one pass.
A standard 3×3 cube is all you need to practise; no special model or accessory is required.
