Play Destroyer by choosing fights rather than charging into every encounter: use its barricade to manage exposure, its missile system to pressure threats, and its thrusters to reposition or commit when the situation supports it. Keep noise, heat, ammunition, healing, and extraction time in view as you decide whether to fight or move on.
What Destroyer is built to do
Bungie describes Destroyer as a “Combat specialist.” Its personal defense barricade, missile systems, and movement thrusters are meant to help it bring the fight to enemy threats. Think of the shell as a combat-focused starting point, not a fixed script: Runner shells are gameplay archetypes that you can customize with cores, implants, weapons, and mods.

How to approach an engagement
Choose when to reveal your position
Do not sprint toward every sound or sighting. Bungie warns that movement, looting, opening doors, using items, healing, swapping weapons, and shooting can all make noise and reveal your location. Spend movement to gain a useful angle, close distance, or escape—not just because you can. Applying that general stealth advice to Destroyer is a tactical judgment, not a required playstyle.

Manage heat while moving
Bungie says crouching makes heat dissipate faster. When the immediate threat allows it, pause or crouch to manage heat before spending movement resources again. Avoid using mobility without a clear destination or purpose.
Use the barricade to control exposure
Use the defense barricade to manage a dangerous angle or buy a moment to reassess. Bungie identifies it as a personal defensive tool but does not prescribe a single placement or timing. Its value depends on the fight and the position you are trying to hold or leave.

Pressure with weapons and missiles when the fight is worth taking
Destroyer’s missile systems are part of its combat-pressure role, but there is no source-backed universal weapon choice or fixed ability combo. Coordinate weapons and abilities around the encounter, your build, and the range you intend to fight at instead of treating every engagement as an automatic all-in.

- Mobility and repositioning: favor choices that support moving into or out of an engagement.
- Defensive control: look for choices that support holding a position or managing exposure.
- Weapon pressure: match weapons and mods to the ranges and encounters you expect to take.
Cores generally target a specific shell and can modify abilities; implants can be used by any shell and add stats and perks. Only Standard (gray) cores work on every shell. Bungie says cores, implants, and weapon mods can be swapped in and out of a run, so you can adjust a setup rather than treating one loadout as permanent. Its starter guide also notes that inspecting weapons outside a run gives access to a mod workbench, making pre-run changes a practical time to review your setup.
Keep the whole run in view
A fight is only one part of a successful run. Bungie recommends bringing plenty of ammunition and healing because little may be found in-run. Its starter tips also say Smart Heal selects an effective item for the situation, outskirts containers are more likely to contain healing and ammunition, and exfils take about a minute to warm up after activation. Factor your supplies and the time needed to extract into the decision to continue fighting or disengage.

Patch notes and version context
Bungie’s July 21, 2026 Update 1.1.5 fixed an issue where sustained damage from the Biotoxic Disinjector did not count toward building Search and Destroy rocket charges. That was a charge-tracking fix, not a general damage or balance buff.
Bungie’s May 29, 2026 Season 2 Combat Tuning Preview discussed broader combat-sandbox priorities, including ammo economy, time to kill, range identity, weapons, mods, equipment, survival, Runner shells, and implants. Those dated notes are context for revisiting a loadout after patches; they do not establish a current best Destroyer setup. Check Bungie’s latest patch notes for changes after these updates.
