Yes—you can build a small Raspberry Pi console that boots straight into a game menu, connects to a modern TV, supports SNES-style controllers, and runs legally obtained SNES games and homebrew. The simplest current beginner setup is a Raspberry Pi 4 or Raspberry Pi 5 running Recalbox.

It will recreate the basic living-room experience of an SNES Classic Edition, not the official Nintendo hardware or software. You choose the controllers, case, games, storage, and other systems, but you also handle setup and the legal responsibility for the game files.

What you’ll build

The finished system will consist of:

  • A Raspberry Pi inside a ventilated case
  • Recalbox, Batocera, or another console-style frontend on a microSD card
  • HDMI output to a TV or monitor
  • One or two USB or Bluetooth controllers
  • Your own legally obtained game files

Unlike a normal Raspberry Pi desktop installation, an emulation-focused operating system starts in a controller-friendly menu. You can browse systems, launch games, configure display options, and use in-game saves or emulator save states.

The result is more expandable than an official SNES Classic: it can support other older consoles, different themes, additional controllers, and larger external storage. It is not guaranteed to match Nintendo’s menus, latency, save behavior, or compatibility, and it is not an official Nintendo product.

Parts list

Required

  • Raspberry Pi 4 or Pi 5. A Pi 3 can also work for an SNES-focused project, particularly if you already own one.
  • microSD card. Use a reputable card. A 32GB card is a practical flexible starting point; an SNES-only library can use less.
  • Correct power supply. Use a model-appropriate supply rather than assuming any phone charger will work.
  • HDMI cable. Pi 4 and Pi 5 use micro-HDMI-to-HDMI cables. Raspberry Pi Zero models use mini-HDMI-to-HDMI.
  • USB or Bluetooth controller. You need one controller, or two for multiplayer.
  • HDMI television or monitor.
  • Computer and microSD-card reader for installing the operating system.
  • Recalbox or Batocera. These provide the console-style software environment.

Strongly recommended

  • A case with unobstructed ventilation
  • Active cooling or a fan-equipped case for Raspberry Pi 5
  • A wired keyboard for first-time setup and recovery
  • Ethernet for the initial network configuration and file transfers
  • A separate backup of the configured microSD card and important save data

Optional

  • Powered USB hub
  • USB SSD or other external storage
  • SNES-style case made for your exact Pi model
  • Safe-shutdown or power-button accessory
  • USB adapter for original SNES controllers
  • Bluetooth controllers

Raspberry Pi 4 or Raspberry Pi 5?

You do not need a Pi 5 for SNES emulation. A Pi 4 is already sufficient for SNES, NES, Genesis, Game Boy, and similar systems. If you already own a Pi 3 or Pi 4, using it is usually the sensible choice.

Your situation Best choice
You already own a Pi 3 or Pi 4 Use it for an SNES-focused build
You are buying specifically for SNES Pi 4 is adequate
You want a current, expandable build Pi 5
You want the smallest possible project Zero 2 W, accepting micro-USB, micro-HDMI, and peripheral compromises
You plan to try more demanding systems Pi 5, with results varying by system and emulator

Why choose Raspberry Pi 4?

The Pi 4 offers ample performance for the SNES generation, broad accessory availability, built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Ethernet, USB ports, and USB-C power. Raspberry Pi lists the model as starting at $35, but that is a manufacturer price signal rather than a guaranteed current retail price. The official documentation specifies a 15W USB-C supply for Pi 4. See the Pi 4 product page and Raspberry Pi setup documentation.

Why choose Raspberry Pi 5?

Pi 5 is the better new-build option if you want faster menus and file transfers, SSD or USB-storage flexibility, or room to experiment with additional emulators. It has a 2.4GHz quad-core Cortex-A76 CPU, dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, two USB 3.0 ports, two USB 2.0 ports, microSD storage, and dual 4Kp60 HDMI output. Its official product information is available on the Raspberry Pi 5 page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Power and cooling matter more on Pi 5. Raspberry Pi recommends a 27W USB-C supply capable of 5V at 5A. A 3A supply may boot the board but limits USB peripheral power to 600mA; a suitable 5A supply can raise that limit to 1.6A within the shared power budget. For sustained workloads, Raspberry Pi recommends an Active Cooler or a fan-equipped Pi 5 case.

Do not buy a Pi 5 simply because it is newer. It is unnecessary for an SNES-only console, and a Pi 5 does not fit a Pi 4 case.

Choose the software

Software Best for Trade-off
Recalbox Beginners wanting the fewest configuration decisions Some menus and behavior vary by release
Batocera Broad multi-system libraries and enthusiasts Offers more configuration choices
RetroPie Existing users and people comfortable with manual configuration Verify current support for your exact Pi model; do not rely on old tutorials

Recommended: Recalbox

Recalbox is the primary recommendation for this build because its current Raspberry Pi download page provides board-specific images, including entries for Raspberry Pi 5, Pi 4/400, Pi 3, and Zero 2. The page accessed for this guide lists Recalbox 10.0.8 for the current Pi 5, Pi 4/400, Pi 3, and Zero 2 entries. Check the official page immediately before installation because version labels can change.

Batocera and RetroPie

Batocera is a strong alternative for users who want a polished EmulationStation-style interface and a broad multi-system setup. Its current download page lists Batocera 43.1 and Raspberry Pi 4 B and Pi 5 B builds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

RetroPie remains useful, especially for existing users and supported Pi 3 or Pi 4 installations. Its official beginner documentation recommends a model-specific image written to a microSD card, but you should verify the current official support and image for Pi 5 rather than copying an old guide.

Choose one platform for the installation. Do not mix Recalbox, Batocera, and RetroPie instructions or images.

Install Recalbox

1. Identify the Raspberry Pi

Check the model printed on the board or match it to the product page. If you have a terminal, run:

cat /proc/device-tree/model

Download the image that exactly matches the board. A Pi 4 image is not a Pi 5 image, and a Zero image is not a Pi 4 image.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Back up the microSD card

Writing an operating-system image erases the selected card. Copy anything important elsewhere, insert the card into your computer, and carefully confirm that the imaging program has selected the correct removable drive. Do not rely only on a drive letter when several storage devices are connected.

3. Write the image

  1. Install and open Raspberry Pi Imager.
  2. Select the downloaded Recalbox image using the image-selection option.
  3. Select the correct microSD card.
  4. Start the write and verification process.
  5. Safely eject the card when Imager finishes.

Imager’s exact labels can change between releases, so select the downloaded image rather than following an old menu path word for word.

4. Connect the hardware

  1. Insert the microSD card into the Pi.
  2. Connect the correct HDMI cable to the TV.
  3. Connect a wired controller or controllers.
  4. Connect a keyboard temporarily.
  5. Connect Ethernet if available, or prepare to configure Wi-Fi.
  6. Connect power last.

Use a Pi 4-compatible 15W supply for Pi 4. For Pi 5, use the recommended 27W, 5V/5A USB-C supply. A weak supply can cause symptoms that look like software faults.

5. Complete first boot

Turn on the TV, select its HDMI input, and power the Pi. The first boot can take longer than later boots while the system expands storage and creates configuration files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Wait for the frontend to load.
  2. Follow the controller-mapping prompt.
  3. Assign every button carefully, including Start, Select, and the shoulder buttons.
  4. Configure Ethernet or Wi-Fi.
  5. Set language and time zone if prompted.
  6. Reboot if requested.

Add games legally

Emulators and game files are separate. Recalbox or Batocera can provide the emulator software, but they do not give you permission to download copyrighted Nintendo games.

Use homebrew games released by their creators, public-domain or freeware software, commercial files supplied by a legitimate publisher, or files you are otherwise legally entitled to use. The legality of copying a cartridge, format-shifting, or downloading a ROM varies by jurisdiction and circumstances. Owning a physical cartridge is not a universal legal defense for every kind of copying or download. The Raspberry Pi Official Magazine discussion of legal classic-console gaming is useful general guidance, not legal advice.

Do not use unauthorized ROM repositories, preloaded “complete” collections, or “1,000-game” cards. This guide does not provide links to them.

Transfer games

USB transfer

  1. Prepare a USB drive in the format and structure required by your chosen frontend.
  2. Use the system’s current documentation if it needs to generate folders automatically.
  3. Copy compatible game files into the SNES folder.
  4. Safely eject the drive from the computer.
  5. Insert it into the Pi and wait for detection or synchronization.
  6. Remove it safely, then refresh or restart the game list if necessary.

Folder names, supported formats, and synchronization behavior can vary between Recalbox and Batocera releases. Follow the current documentation for the software you installed instead of assuming one universal path.

Network transfer

Ethernet is easiest to troubleshoot for the first transfer. Wi-Fi is convenient once the network is working. Recalbox and Batocera provide network-sharing options, while the RetroPie documentation and Raspberry Pi Magazine describe network and Samba-based transfer workflows. Use the frontend’s displayed network name or address and its current instructions; do not expose the device to an untrusted network unnecessarily.

Configure controllers and saves

For a traditional SNES layout, map the controller by function rather than by the printed letter alone:

  • Four face buttons: confirm, cancel, and the SNES action buttons
  • L and R: shoulder buttons
  • Start and Select: their corresponding system functions
  • D-pad: directional input
  • Hotkey: the frontend’s combination for exiting games or opening emulator functions

Button labels differ between controllers and regions, so test the mapping inside an actual SNES game. A wired controller is the easiest first setup. For example, the manufacturer lists Raspberry Pi compatibility and wired USB connectivity for the 8BitDo SN30 Pro USB.

Configure Player 1 first, then Player 2. Bluetooth pairing is more convenient but introduces extra failure points: the controller may be in the wrong mode, paired to another device, paired but not assigned, or affected by interference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In-game saves and save states

An in-game save uses the game’s own save system. An emulator save state captures the entire state of the running emulator. Use in-game saves for normal play and save states as a convenience. Keep multiple save-state slots, test that loading works, and back up important save data before changing software or replacing the card. Hotkeys vary by frontend, controller, and emulator core, so check the current hotkey menu rather than assuming one universal combination.

Display and sound settings

For a convincing SNES-style presentation:

  • Set the television to Game Mode to reduce display processing and input delay.
  • Use the original 4:3 aspect ratio unless you deliberately prefer widescreen stretching.
  • Integer scaling can preserve crisp pixel geometry, although it may produce black borders.
  • Shaders and CRT filters are optional; they change appearance and consume some performance.
  • Adjust frontend and emulator volume separately if one is unexpectedly quiet.

Not every game or emulator core behaves identically. If a title has graphical glitches, audio problems, or unusual timing, test the default core and settings before adding filters or overrides.

Install the case and cooling

Choose a case explicitly marked for your exact board. Pi 4 and Pi 5 cases are not automatically interchangeable. Keep ventilation openings clear, leave access to the microSD slot and HDMI ports, and do not force the board into an SNES-shaped enclosure.

For Pi 5, a fan-equipped case or official Active Cooler is the safest choice for sustained use and later experimentation. SNES emulation is relatively light, so “Pi 5 needs a fan for every use” is too absolute; active cooling is nevertheless recommended for sustained performance and demanding workloads.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshooting

Black screen or “no signal”

  1. Confirm the TV is on the correct HDMI input.
  2. Check that the cable matches the Pi: micro-HDMI for Pi 4/Pi 5, mini-HDMI for Zero.
  3. Try another TV HDMI port and another cable.
  4. Boot with unnecessary USB devices disconnected.
  5. Confirm that the image matches the exact Pi model.

The controller has no input

  • Reconnect a wired controller directly to the Pi rather than through an unpowered hub.
  • Run the controller-mapping process again.
  • Check that the controller is in the correct USB or Bluetooth mode.
  • Confirm it was assigned to Player 1.
  • Test inside a game, not only in the frontend.

Bluetooth pairs but does not work

Remove the pairing, put the controller into its correct Raspberry Pi mode, pair it again, and assign it in the controller settings. Prevent it from automatically reconnecting to a phone, computer, or console nearby. Use wired controllers while diagnosing the rest of the installation.

Games do not appear

  • Confirm the files are in the correct SNES directory for your frontend.
  • Check that the file format is supported.
  • Refresh or restart the game list.
  • Verify that the transfer completed and the drive was safely ejected.
  • Do not assume a corrupted or incorrectly named file is an emulator failure.

The Pi reboots or USB devices disconnect

On Pi 5, suspect power first. Use the recommended 27W/5A supply, replace questionable cables, disconnect external drives and extra accessories, and use a powered USB hub when several devices are attached. Raspberry Pi documents a 600mA USB peripheral limit with a 3A supply and up to 1.6A with a suitable 5A supply, subject to the shared budget.

No audio

Check the TV volume and input, confirm the HDMI connection, inspect the frontend’s audio-output setting, and test another HDMI port or cable. Remove unusual audio or USB hardware until basic HDMI audio works.

The microSD card becomes corrupted

Unplugging power during a write, counterfeit cards, heat, and hard shutdowns can corrupt storage. Shut down from the frontend before removing power, use a reputable card, and keep a backup image after configuration. For a large library, consider separate or external storage—but keep save-data backups independently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SNES Classic Edition versus Raspberry Pi

Feature Official SNES Classic Raspberry Pi build
Setup Minimal Moderate
Official Nintendo branding Yes No
Games Fixed included library User-managed, legally obtained files
Expandability Limited Broad
Controllers Original-style controllers included You choose USB or Bluetooth controllers
Customization Limited Themes, cases, systems, controls, and storage
Legal responsibility for added games Not applicable to the included library Belongs to the user

The Raspberry Pi route is not automatically cheaper. Once you include the board, power supply, case, storage, controllers, HDMI cable, and shipping, the total can approach or exceed used hardware prices. Its main advantages are availability, flexibility, and expandability—not a guaranteed saving.

Recommended builds

  • Existing hardware: Raspberry Pi 3 or Pi 4, reputable microSD card, model-appropriate power supply, ventilated case, and wired SNES-style controller.
  • SNES-focused new build: Raspberry Pi 4, 32GB-or-larger reputable microSD card, official or equivalent suitable power supply, micro-HDMI cable, ventilated case, and one or two wired controllers.
  • Expandable new build: Raspberry Pi 5, recommended 27W/5A USB-C supply, active cooling, reputable microSD card or SSD, micro-HDMI cable, and wired controllers.

Install the current Recalbox image for the exact board, use only legally obtained games, and shut down from the frontend instead of unplugging the console. That combination delivers the closest simple Raspberry Pi equivalent to the plug-in-and-play spirit of an SNES Classic while preserving the flexibility of a modern emulation system.
