Proton 9.0-3 was a substantial compatibility release for Linux gaming when Valve published it on September 19, 2024. It added or restored compatibility for 16 listed titles, repaired several Proton 9.0 regressions, and included fixes for launchers, video playback, controllers, microphones, graphics, and memory usage. It is now an older Proton branch rather than Valve’s current release, but it remains relevant when a specific game benefits from one of its targeted fixes.
Valve’s release notes are available in the official Proton 9.0-3 announcement. Their “now playable” wording indicates a compatibility improvement or successful test condition—not a universal promise of performance, Steam Deck verification, multiplayer support, or flawless operation on every system.

What Proton 9.0-3 changed
Proton is Valve’s Steam compatibility tool, based on Wine and additional components, that runs many Windows games on Linux, including Steam Deck. It does not convert Windows games into native Linux binaries; it provides the compatibility layer and supporting technologies needed to run the Windows version.

The release delivered three broad types of change:
- New compatibility: 16 titles were listed as newly playable.
- Regression recovery: several games that had broken during the Proton 9.0 cycle became playable again.
- Targeted fixes: Valve addressed specific launcher, video, controller, microphone, graphics, shader-cache, prefix, and crash problems.
It also updated Wine Mono to 9.2.0 and updated DXVK, DXVK-NVAPI, and VKD3D-Proton. Those components handle important parts of Windows-game compatibility, including DirectX translation and supporting runtime behavior.
The 16 titles Valve listed as playable

Two qualifications matter immediately. First, Valve explicitly marked Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora as desktop-only, so its appearance in the list must not be presented as Steam Deck support. Second, Owl Observatory Demo and To Pixelia Demo are demos rather than full commercial releases.
“Playable” also does not specify a frame rate, battery life, resolution, default controller layout, cutscene quality, online-service status, or compatibility with every GPU and driver combination. A game may launch while still requiring configuration or suffering from performance and multiplayer limitations.
The most important regression fixes
For many Proton users, the restoration work mattered more than the new-game list. Valve identified these notable regressions and fixes:
- Alan Wake’s American Nightmare: DLC became playable again.
- Bionic Commando: became playable again.
- Sonic Forces: controllers worked again.
- GRID Autosport and GRID 2: became playable again.
- Noita: mods no longer failed to update.
- Warhammer 40,000: Darktide: random freezes while processing shader cache were fixed.
The Darktide change should not be read as a promise that all shader-compilation stutter disappeared. It addresses the specific random-freeze behavior described in Valve’s notes.
Other fixes worth knowing about
Steam Deck and controller fixes
- Halo Infinite received a fix for rendering at unusual resolutions on Steam Deck.
- FINAL FANTASY XII THE ZODIAC AGE received a fix for a white-screen launch problem on Steam Deck OLED.
- Fallout 3 and Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition gained controller support in their launchers through Xalia.
- Squad received improved microphone support.
- Helldivers 2 received a microphone fix after a game update.
- IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover Blitz Edition received a fix for a missing cursor.
These are targeted changes, not universal controller or Steam Deck improvements. Input behavior can still depend on Steam Input, the selected layout, Bluetooth hardware, the game’s launcher, and the game itself.
Launchers, prefixes, and game updates
- EA Desktop received fixes for missing installation text and broken “Customize Setup” behavior.
- Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon received an adjustment to Ubisoft Connect login behavior on a new prefix, although Valve warned that similar Ubisoft behavior could remain in other games.
- Undecember was fixed after a recent game update.
- Dinogen Online received fixes for freezes and startup crashes.
- SCP: Secret Laboratory received fixes for crashes after a game update.
- Once Human received fixes for fresh-prefix problems.
- RAID: World War II received a fix for random startup hangs.
- Strip Fighter ZERO received a fix for failing to start on some systems.
Launcher fixes still depend on the launcher’s own updates, authentication, cached credentials, and network access. Proton cannot guarantee that a third-party launcher will remain compatible indefinitely.

Video, graphics, and VR
- Iragon received a cutscene-playback fix.
- Yakuza Kiwami was fixed on certain setups.
- AVPro playback in VRChat was improved, alongside added D3D12 support in OpenXR.
- Quantum Break received improved quality for streamed-episode video.
- Yakuza 4 Remastered received a fix for artifacts in its opening video.
- Spirit Hunter: NG and One Finger Death Punch received video-playback fixes.
- Burnout Paradise Remastered received reduced crash risk and improved memory usage during video-input scenarios.
- Fonts were fixed in Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet and Shady Brook.
Additional game-specific changes
- Guild Wars 2 received improved language support.
- Zeepkist received improved Workshop-level support.
- Arcanum received improved loading times.
- Aimlabs’ News section was fixed.
- Romance of the Three Kingdoms received a fix for a Japanese license-agreement display problem.
- Starfield: Creation Kit received a crash fix.
Valve also added a Proton-log warning for systems with a low file-descriptor limit and updated several underlying compatibility components.
Who should use Proton 9.0-3?
It is worth testing if:
- Your game appears in the 16-title playable list.
- A game broke after you moved from Proton 9.0-2 or another earlier version.
- You need one of the release’s specific launcher, video, controller, microphone, or shader-cache fixes.
- A game’s compatibility report specifically recommends Proton 9.0-3.
- You are troubleshooting a title named in the release notes.
Choose another Proton version first if the game worked better under Proton Experimental, a newer stable branch, or an older Proton release. A current game update may introduce a problem that 9.0-3 cannot address, and a newer Proton version may contain a later fix.
If a native Linux build is available and works well, it may be preferable to forcing the Windows build through Proton.
Steam Deck support is not the same as desktop Linux support
Proton serves both Steam Deck and desktop Linux. Proton 9.0-3 should therefore not be described as a Steam Deck-only release.
The release notes explicitly identify Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora as desktop-only. Other entries may work on a Linux desktop but have no equivalent guarantee on Steam Deck. A Steam Deck “Playable” or “Verified” badge is a separate Valve compatibility classification from a Proton changelog entry.
Hardware, SteamOS revisions, Linux distributions, GPU vendors, drivers, screen resolutions, input devices, and power limits can all affect the result. Valve’s Proton requirements guidance warns that newer Steam Play titles may require cutting-edge graphics drivers.

- Open Steam and go to your Library.
- Right-click the game, or open its game-management menu.
- Select Properties.
- Open Compatibility.
- Enable “Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.”
- Select Proton 9.0-3, if it is installed and available.
- Close the dialog and launch the game.
To revert, return to the same menu and select the previously working Proton version, Proton Experimental, or another installed stable version. Steam’s global compatibility settings can also define a default Proton choice, although the exact label and placement may change with Steam client updates.

Valve’s Proton 9.0-3 testing issue documents the general compatibility-tool workflow and the release-candidate testing that preceded the final release.
If Proton 9.0-3 is missing or the game still fails
- Restart Steam.
- Look in the Steam Library for the Proton 9.0 compatibility-tool entry.
- Install or update the relevant Proton tool.
- Reopen the game’s Properties → Compatibility page.
- Test Proton 9.0-2, Proton 9.0-3, Proton Experimental, and a newer stable Proton version where appropriate.
- Temporarily remove custom launch options and third-party overrides.
- Verify the game’s files through Steam.
- Update GPU drivers and system packages.
- Test a fresh Proton prefix if the existing prefix may contain damaged files or stale launcher configuration.
- Generate a Proton log before reporting the failure.
For logging, add this to the game’s Steam launch options:
PROTON_LOG=1 %command%Proton normally writes a log using a filename based on the game’s Steam app ID. Valve documents logging and other runtime options in the Proton repository.
As a diagnostic fallback, you can try:
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%This switches from Vulkan-based DXVK rendering to WineD3D’s OpenGL path. It is a troubleshooting test, not a general performance recommendation. If it changes the result, the underlying issue may involve Vulkan, the graphics driver, or the DirectX translation path.
Be careful with prefixes
A fix that works in a new prefix may not immediately repair an old prefix containing stale launcher files, configuration overrides, or failed redistributable installations. Do not delete a prefix casually: local settings and saves can be lost if they are not synchronized elsewhere. Back up important data and confirm cloud-save behavior before resetting anything.

- It does not guarantee a stable frame rate or particular battery life.
- It does not automatically confer Steam Deck Verified status.
- It does not guarantee anti-cheat, DRM, or multiplayer compatibility.
- It does not ensure that every cutscene, codec, launcher, controller, or microphone works on every system.
- It does not protect compatibility against future game updates or launcher changes.
- It does not eliminate graphics-driver requirements.
Proton 9.0-3 was published on September 19, 2024. By September 2026, Valve’s release history includes later Proton 10 and Proton 11 branches, so 9.0-3 should be treated as a historical compatibility option rather than the current Proton release. Check Valve’s release list and changelog when choosing a version for a newly released game.
