WordPress comment moderation lets you decide what may be published, what must wait for review, what is automatically treated as spam, and what is deleted. Start at Settings → Discussion to set site-wide rules, then work the queue at Dashboard → Comments. For an individual post, use its Discussion panel; for many posts, use the Posts bulk editor.

What comment moderation does
“Comment moderation is a feature in WordPress that allows you to prevent comments from appearing on your site without your express approval.” — WordPress.org Documentation, “Comment moderation.”
Moderation is a publication gate, not merely a spam folder. A pending comment is stored but remains invisible to visitors until someone approves it. An approved comment is public. A spam comment is hidden as unwanted, while a trashed comment is held temporarily before WordPress permanently deletes it.

A practical policy has three layers:
- Prevent or slow unwanted submissions with registration, identity requirements, link limits, and approval rules.
- Route uncertain comments to review using moderation keys and the pending queue.
- Delete only clearly unacceptable material with disallowed keys or the Trash/Spam actions.
These controls reduce automated abuse but do not stop every spammer. They work best when someone checks the queue consistently and recovers legitimate comments that were misclassified.
Set your site-wide rules in Settings → Discussion
Open Settings → Discussion from the WordPress administrator dashboard. The exact grouping and wording can differ by version, but the controls cover whether new posts accept comments, who may submit them, how comments are held, and which notifications are sent.

Use the default setting for new posts to choose whether comments are open. This setting affects posts created after the change; it does not reliably rewrite the discussion setting on every existing post. Handle older content separately with the post editor or a bulk edit.
Choose who can comment
WordPress can require commenters to provide a name and email address. You can also require commenters to be registered and logged in. Requiring an account adds friction and can discourage casual participation, but it makes automated submissions less convenient and gives your moderators a clearer identity trail.
For an open community, requiring name and email while keeping comments available to visitors is a lighter barrier. For a private or high-risk discussion, requiring registration and login may be preferable. Neither option guarantees that every submission is genuine.
Set comment-age and activity defaults carefully
Discussion settings can include limits on how long comments remain open after publication. If your installation exposes that control, use it for a deliberate policy—for example, closing discussion after an event or support period—rather than as a substitute for reviewing active threads. Existing posts can always be closed individually or in bulk as described below.
Configure “Before a comment appears”
The Before a comment appears section determines whether a comment can become public immediately or must first pass a review rule.
Require administrator approval for every comment
Enable An administrator must always approve the comment when every contribution needs an explicit decision. This is appropriate for a small site, a new community, or a site facing a high level of abuse. The trade-off is workload: every legitimate comment also waits for a moderator, and discussions move more slowly when no one is watching the queue.
Trust commenters with a previous approval
Another rule allows a comment through when the commenter has a previously approved comment. WordPress matches the commenter’s email address. New addresses and comments that otherwise trigger a rule remain pending.

This works well for a repeat community in which established participants have earned lighter-touch moderation. Treat the email match as a convenience, not proof of identity: a shared address, a changed account, or a compromised mailbox can produce an incorrect trust decision.

If the site has sensitive discussions, combine the previous-commenter rule with the always-approve rule instead of assuming one setting covers every case. The resulting policy is stricter and creates more review work, but it makes the publication decision unambiguous.
Use comment moderation keys to hold suspicious comments
The Comment Moderation field lets you enter words, phrases, IP addresses, or other patterns that should send a comment to the pending queue. You can also set a minimum number of links: comments containing at least that many links are held for review.
Set a link-count threshold
Choose a threshold that reflects the kind of discussion you host. Link-heavy spam is common, so a low threshold can be useful on a general site. However, a legitimate tutorial, game mod guide, or troubleshooting answer may contain several useful references. A threshold that is too low creates false positives and increases moderator workload.
WordPress evaluates the number of links in the comment against the threshold you choose. A comment that meets or exceeds it is held rather than published; moderators can still approve it after checking the links.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Add targeted moderation keys
Enter recurring spam terms, suspicious phrases, known IP addresses, or patterns that are specific enough to identify unwanted submissions. WordPress says matching is performed inside words. A short key can therefore match a larger word that contains it.
For example, a key that is only a few letters long may also occur inside an unrelated legitimate word. Use distinctive terms and review the queue after changing the list. If a key catches ordinary discussion, remove it or replace it with a more precise phrase.
Keep a change log for keys
When several people moderate a site, record why a key was added and whether it caused false positives. This makes it easier to remove an outdated term and prevents moderators from repeatedly adding broad words that interfere with normal conversation.
Reserve “Disallowed Comment Keys” for automatic deletion
Disallowed Comment Keys is more aggressive than moderation. If a comment or its metadata matches a disallowed key, WordPress deletes the comment immediately without notifying you. There is no pending review step for that match.

Use this field only for terms you are willing to delete automatically. Clearly unacceptable phrases or unmistakable abuse may qualify. Broad words, common names, or short fragments do not: because matching can occur inside larger words, an innocent comment could be removed without notice.
Review the list periodically. If a legitimate comment disappears, check whether a disallowed key caused the deletion and narrow or remove that key. Keep uncertain patterns in the moderation list instead, where a moderator can make the final decision.
Turn on the right moderation emails
Under Settings → Discussion → Email me whenever, enable A comment is held for moderation if someone needs an alert when a comment enters the queue. WordPress sends the message to the site administration address.
WordPress documentation states that a post author with permission to edit comments and at least the Editor role may also receive this notice. A default Author does not have comment-moderation rights and does not receive the moderation email. Assign roles deliberately: notification alone does not grant permission to approve, edit, mark as spam, or trash a comment.
Email is useful for a low-volume site, but it can become noisy when automated submissions arrive in bursts. Set a routine that combines alerts with a scheduled queue review so that a missed message does not leave comments pending indefinitely.
Process comments at Dashboard → Comments
Open Dashboard → Comments to see the moderation queue. The status filters are All, Pending, Approved, Spam, and Trash.
Understand each status before acting
| Status | What visitors see | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| Pending | Not public | Review it, then approve, mark as spam, or move it to Trash. |
| Approved | Public on the associated post | Leave it, edit it, unapprove it, or remove it if the conversation changes. |
| Spam | Hidden as unwanted | Check periodically for false positives and recover legitimate comments. |
| Trash | Not public | Recover an accidental removal or allow automatic deletion after the retention period. |
Trash comments are retained temporarily and automatically deleted permanently after 30 days. Check both Spam and Trash before permanent cleanup; a legitimate comment can be misclassified in either place.
Use the individual comment actions
Hover over a comment to reveal actions. Depending on its state and your permissions, you can Approve or Unapprove, Reply, Quick Edit, Edit, Spam, and Trash.
- Approve publishes a pending comment.
- Unapprove removes a public comment from view and returns it to review.
- Reply lets you answer from the dashboard without opening the post.
- Quick Edit changes common comment fields in place; Edit opens the full editor.
- Spam hides a comment as unwanted and helps separate it from ordinary pending work.
- Trash removes it from normal views while preserving it temporarily.
Read the full comment, inspect its links, and consider the surrounding thread before deciding. A message that contains a link is not automatically spam; context and destination matter.

Clear a backlog with bulk actions
Select several comments using the checkboxes, choose a bulk action, and apply it. The available actions include Approve, Unapprove, Mark as Spam, and Move to Trash.
- Open Dashboard → Comments and choose the relevant status filter, usually Pending.
- Scan the author, excerpt, post, and link indicators before selecting items.
- Select only comments that share the same decision. Keep uncertain comments unselected.
- Choose the bulk action and apply it.
- Open Spam and Trash afterward to check for accidental selections.
Bulk actions are efficient for an obvious burst of identical spam, but they magnify mistakes. Work in small batches when a queue contains mixed legitimate and unwanted comments.
Reduce spam without blocking legitimate discussion
WordPress recommends combining several built-in controls rather than expecting one switch to stop every spammer. The main options and their trade-offs are:
| Control | Best use | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Always require approval | Small or high-risk sites where every comment needs review | Maximum workload and slower discussion |
| Previously approved commenter | Repeat communities with trusted participants | A matching email can reduce review for future comments |
| Link-count threshold | Sites targeted by link-heavy spam | Legitimate resource-rich comments may be held |
| Moderation keys | Known spam words, phrases, IPs, or patterns | Broad keys can create false positives |
| Disallowed keys | Clearly unacceptable terms that should be removed immediately | Matching comments are deleted without notification |
| Anti-spam plugin | Higher-volume sites needing automated filtering | Adds a third-party dependency and requires maintenance |
At minimum, require a commenter name and email, hold comments above a sensible link count, and moderate before publication when abuse is persistent. Requiring registration and login provides stronger friction but can reduce participation. Adjust one control at a time and watch the pending queue so you can identify which change caused false positives.
Close comments on one post
To stop new comments on a specific post, edit that post and open its Discussion panel. Choose Closed, then save or update the post.
- Open Posts and select the post.
- In the editor, open the Discussion panel. If it is hidden, use the editor’s preferences or panels menu to reveal it.
- Set comments to Closed or clear the option that allows comments, depending on the wording in your version.
- Save or update the post.
- View the public post to confirm that the comment form is no longer offered.
Closing comments prevents new submissions; it does not automatically erase existing approved comments. Moderate or remove those comments separately if the post requires a clean discussion.
Close comments on many posts, including older content
For a large set of posts, use the Posts bulk editor rather than opening each post individually.

- Open Posts → All Posts.
- Filter or search for the posts whose discussions should close.
- Select the posts and choose Edit from the bulk actions menu.
- Set Comments to Do not allow.
- Apply the change and verify a sample of the edited posts.
Use filters first when only a category, date range, or author’s posts should change. A broad selection can close comments on evergreen guides that still benefit from reader feedback.

A legitimate comment is pending
Open the comment and check which rule held it. Look for a link-count threshold, a moderation key, or the previously approved commenter rule. If it is acceptable, choose Approve. If the same contributor is repeatedly held, refine the key or reconsider the threshold rather than manually repeating the same approval forever.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
A legitimate comment is in Spam
Open the Spam filter before emptying it. Recover the legitimate item using the available non-spam or approval action, then inspect the rule that caused the classification. Do not assume that every comment with promotional language is unwanted; check whether it answers the post and whether its links are relevant.
A comment was trashed by mistake
Open Trash before the 30-day retention period ends and restore the comment if your installation provides that action. After permanent deletion, WordPress cannot recover the comment through the normal dashboard.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA useful comment never appears in the queue
Check Spam and Trash, then review the disallowed-key list. A disallowed-key match is deleted immediately without notification, so it will not wait in Pending. Narrow the key if it is catching legitimate text.
Moderators are not receiving alerts
Confirm that A comment is held for moderation is enabled and that the administration email address is correct. Verify the user’s role and permissions: a default Author does not receive this moderation notice because that role cannot moderate comments. An Editor-level post author with permission to edit comments may receive it.
When built-in moderation is not enough
High-volume sites may need automated filtering in addition to WordPress’s native rules. WordPress’s spam guidance names Akismet as an optional plugin path after reviewing built-in settings and keeping WordPress and plugins up to date.
treat any anti-spam plugin as an escalation, not a replacement for a clear policy. A plugin adds a third-party dependency, may require configuration or ongoing maintenance, and can still misclassify legitimate comments. Keep a human review path, check its spam folder regularly, and update WordPress and installed plugins so security and compatibility fixes are applied.
Before adding automation, measure the operational problem in practical terms: how many comments arrive, how many require manual review, and which patterns recur. If the queue is small, better keys and a consistent review schedule may be simpler than another dependency. If abuse arrives continuously, automated screening can reduce the volume that moderators must inspect.
Create a repeatable moderation routine
A policy is only effective when the team follows it consistently. Define decisions in advance:
- Approve: on-topic comments that add information, ask a genuine question, or continue the discussion respectfully.
- Hold: uncertain comments, link-heavy resources, and first-time contributors who trigger a moderation rule.
- Spam: obvious automated submissions, unrelated promotions, and deceptive link drops.
- Trash: comments that should be removed from ordinary views but may need a short recovery window.
- Disallow automatically: only terms whose deletion you accept without review or notification.
Schedule queue checks at a frequency that matches your publishing calendar. After a new post or a public event, review more often; for an inactive archive, consider closing comments on older posts rather than leaving an unattended form open indefinitely. Periodically inspect approved comments for abuse that passed the initial rules and update moderation keys when a new pattern appears.
A practical setup for a WordPress gaming site
Gaming sites often receive short reactions, spoiler-sensitive discussion, troubleshooting steps, and comments containing several links to patches or resources. A balanced setup is to require a name and email, hold comments that exceed a carefully chosen link count, and send first-time or key-matching comments to Pending. Keep comments open on active news and guide posts while closing discussions on pages where the event or support window has ended.
Recommended Free Tools
Use the always-approve rule when a post involves harassment risk, time-sensitive controversy, or a community event that needs close oversight. Use the previously approved commenter rule for established contributors only when the email-match policy is acceptable for your community. Keep disallowed keys narrow, because common gaming terms can appear inside other words and may otherwise delete useful comments silently.
Moderators should inspect links rather than judging solely by quantity, because a legitimate technical answer may need multiple references. Before emptying Spam or Trash, scan for player reports, bug reproductions, or correction requests that were routed incorrectly.
