Use YouTube’s held-message review, blocked words, and slow mode to control chat; choose whether anyone, subscribers, or members can participate; and give trusted moderators clear authority and handoff notes. A continuous stream also needs a human coverage plan if you expect held messages and incidents to receive timely attention—YouTube provides moderation tools, but does not prescribe staffing levels or a 24/7 rota.
Set up chat controls before the stream runs unattended
Choose a held-message filter
In YouTube Studio, set live-chat moderation to Basic or Strict. Basic holds potentially inappropriate messages; Strict holds a broader range. A moderator must make a decision for a held message to be shown: if nobody shows or hides it, it remains hidden from viewers. A broader filter may reduce what viewers see immediately, but it can also create more review work. Choose a level the channel can support and check the held queue during staffed periods. YouTube’s live-chat moderation guidance cautions that “No system is perfect,” so treat automated review as a filter, not a substitute for human decisions.
Build and maintain a blocked-words list
Add terms and phrases that match your channel rules and recurring spam patterns. YouTube provides blocked-word controls, but the list itself is channel-specific: review it as patterns change, and avoid treating it as a complete moderation solution. Messages caught by filters may need human review depending on the settings you use.
Decide who can participate and how quickly
Open chat lowers the barrier to joining. Subscriber-only chat can add a subscription-duration threshold; YouTube says viewers are notified when this restriction is on, and participation publicly indicates that a viewer is subscribed. Slow mode limits how often a viewer can post and can be combined with subscriber-only chat. Members-only and subscriber-only modes cannot be enabled together. Explain restrictions in the stream description or pinned channel messaging so regular listeners know what to expect.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose the least restrictive setting that addresses the problem you are seeing. A threshold or slow mode can make a busy chat easier to follow, but each also adds friction for people who simply want to listen and take part.
Check whether chat is available for this stream
Live chat appears on YouTube watch pages, not embedded players. If a stream is set as made for kids, live chat and chat replay are disabled. Check the audience setting and where viewers are watching before troubleshooting missing chat. YouTube’s live-streaming help describes these viewing and audience constraints.

Assign moderator roles and define what to do
Choose trusted people who understand the channel’s rules and can respond calmly. YouTube distinguishes standard moderators from managing moderators. Standard moderators can remove content, time out users, hide users, and review held messages. Managing moderators have additional chat controls, but YouTube’s Android help page says they do not have access to Live Control Room or YouTube Studio. Keep role boundaries clear when assigning access. YouTube’s moderator guidance outlines the roles and tools.

- Remove a message when the content breaks the channel’s rules but the person does not need to be blocked from participating.
- Time out a user when a temporary interruption is appropriate. YouTube’s listed timeout intervals run from 10 seconds to 24 hours.
- Hide a user when their messages should no longer be visible to other viewers.
- Escalate to the channel owner for uncertain or serious incidents, repeated disruption, or decisions outside the moderator’s authority.
These are available actions, not a mandatory sequence. Give moderators examples of the channel’s rules and specify who handles difficult calls; do not leave each shift to invent its own standard.
Plan human coverage and handoffs for a continuous stream
YouTube does not publish a moderator-to-viewer ratio, required shift length, or standard rota for a 24/7 music channel. Set coverage according to the channel’s actual chat activity and how quickly you want people to respond. If you expect held messages to be reviewed continuously, arrange people to check the queue; YouTube does not guarantee that a moderator will review it for you.

During a shift
- Check live chat and held messages at planned intervals, and more often when activity or spam rises.
- Use the least restrictive action that addresses the behavior, following the channel’s agreed escalation policy.
- If spam surges, consider enabling slow mode or temporarily narrowing who can participate. Managing moderators can change participant mode and message delay according to YouTube’s moderator guidance.
At handoff
Pass on a short record of active issues, actions already taken, and anything that still needs review. This is an operating practice for the channel, not a YouTube feature or requirement. Clear handoffs help prevent a new moderator from repeating an action without context or overlooking an unresolved incident.
After a stream or during an incident
Live chat replay is on by default for stream archives, and channel owners can turn it off. Decide whether retaining the replay fits your community and moderation needs. If chat or stream content violates YouTube’s Community Guidelines, YouTube may turn chat off; channel-level settings do not replace the platform’s rules. YouTube also says its chat summaries are experimental and may be inaccurate, offensive, or inappropriate, so do not use them as moderation records. YouTube’s help page on live chat summaries explains that limitation.

Match the settings to the community you want
| Decision | What to weigh |
|---|---|
| Open, subscriber-only, or members-only | Open chat invites broad participation. Subscriber-only or members-only access restricts who can post; subscriber-only can include a subscription-duration threshold. Subscriber-only and members-only cannot be active together. |
| Slow mode | Use it when the pace makes conversation hard to follow or spam is rising. It can be combined with subscriber-only chat. |
| Basic or Strict held-message review | Basic holds potentially inappropriate messages; Strict holds a broader range. Consider how much review work the channel can cover. |
| Standard or managing moderators | Assign only the authority needed. Managing moderators have additional chat controls, but the cited Android help page says they cannot access Live Control Room or YouTube Studio. |
| Chat replay | Decide whether archived streams should retain live-chat replay; it is on by default for stream archives and the channel owner can turn it off. |
Common live-chat problems and what to check
- Held messages do not appear in chat: They stay hidden unless a moderator shows them. Check the held-message queue and confirm someone is assigned to review it.
- Viewers cannot post: Check whether subscriber-only or members-only participation is enabled, whether slow mode is active, and whether the stream is set as made for kids. Chat is also unavailable in embedded players.
- Chat is overwhelmed by rapid posts: Consider slow mode or temporarily limiting participation, then have moderators review the current queue and follow the handoff process.
- A moderator cannot find a control: Confirm whether they are a standard or managing moderator and which interface they are using. YouTube’s Android guidance says managing moderators cannot access Live Control Room or YouTube Studio.
- Chat disappears during a stream: Check the audience setting and platform notices. YouTube may turn chat off if chat or stream content violates its Community Guidelines.
Or let it run in the cloud
