There is no confirmed stable release date for Minecraft’s winter update. As of October 3, 2026, the icy content is being tested as experimental Drop 4 of 2026 in Bedrock Preview 26.60.29. “26.4,” meanwhile, refers to a separate Java Edition snapshot series—not a confirmed stable version number for the winter content.
When does the Minecraft 26.4 winter update come out?
Mojang has not announced a stable release date for the winter content in the official material available as of October 3, 2026. The official testing roundup describes it as the final game drop of 2026, and the September 30 Bedrock Preview changelog labels its Drop 4 features experimental. Neither statement establishes a launch day. Minecraft’s 2026 testing roundup and the Bedrock Preview 26.60.29 changelog are the relevant current announcements.
Minecraft says game drops generally release for Java and Bedrock on the same day, but that general release pattern is not a date announcement for this drop. Until Mojang publishes one, claims that the winter update will arrive on a particular day are speculation. Minecraft’s update timeline
Is Minecraft 26.4 out yet, and what does the number mean?
Java 26.4 is represented by snapshots, which are test builds rather than stable releases. Snapshot 1 was published September 22, 2026, and Snapshot 2 on September 29. The available announcements do not establish that the winter drop has launched as a stable Java 26.4 update. Java 26.4 Snapshot 1; Java 26.4 Snapshot 2

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Minecraft’s version numbering uses the year as the shared prefix, so 2026 versions begin with “26.” The number after that can differ between Java and Bedrock because the editions have different release cadences; a shared year prefix does not mean their builds contain identical features. Java 26.4 and Bedrock Preview 26.60: what is the difference?
| Edition/build | Status and focus | How to access the test build |
|---|---|---|
| Java Edition 26.4 snapshots | Testing builds with rendering, interface, and technical changes. The listed snapshots do not establish the winter content as a stable release. | Enable snapshots in the Minecraft Launcher’s Installations tab. Back up worlds or use a separate folder. |
| Bedrock Preview 26.60.29 | September 30, 2026 preview. Experimental Drop 4 content includes the icy gameplay features described below. | Use Preview/Beta where available. Minecraft lists Preview availability on Realms for Xbox, Windows 10/11, and iOS, and Betas on Android through Google Play. |
These are separate testing tracks, not matching stable releases. Minecraft’s official snapshot instructions warn that testing versions can corrupt worlds. Its testing roundup explains the Bedrock Preview and Beta availability.

Ice Caves
Ice Caves are a new cave biome beneath colder, low-temperature Overworld biomes. Their terrain is mainly Packed Ice and Calcite, with icicles, occasional snow, ore pockets in Stone and Deepslate, and occasional Ice Crystals. Strays and Frostbites can spawn there alongside ordinary cave mobs.

Ice Crystals naturally appear on Packed Ice, emit light, and can be placed in any direction. They break if the block supporting them is removed. The preview changelog notes their current size is smaller than intended, a reminder that the test version is unfinished.
Icicles are speleothem-like blocks found in Ice Caves. Pointing downward, they can naturally grow up to five blocks long. Falling icicles can hurt entities, with additional damage to entities that land on them. Nearby light sources or the Nether break them, except for the base block.

Freezing effect, potions, and arrows
The Freezing effect makes players shake, lowers their jump height, and eventually causes damage. Affected players slowly freeze as they would in Powder Snow. Leather armor prevents freezing in the same way as it does in Powder Snow, but it does not prevent the effect from being applied or remove it.
The preview says Ice Balls can be used to brew a Potion of Freezing. Arrows dipped in a cauldron holding the potion become Arrows of Freezing.

Frostbite is a zombie variant that appears in cold or icy biomes and switches between melee and ranged attacks. Its melee attacks apply Freezing; at range, it throws Ice Balls. Frostbites are immune to freezing and can stand on Powder Snow.

Zombies and Husks inside Powder Snow now transform into Frostbites. A Frostbite that remains underwater long enough transforms into a Zombie. Frostbites drop Rotten Flesh and Ice Balls.
Ice Balls
Ice Balls are Frostbite projectiles that cause a small amount of damage and knockback, and break when they hit a block or entity. The preview changelog lists their damage as 4, scaling down with velocity.

Snapshot 1: Vulkan and older world upgrades
Java 26.4 Snapshot 1 makes Vulkan the default graphics API. It also changes world upgrades from before Caves and Cliffs so that sulfur caves generate below old chunks. The snapshot includes minor block, item, and entity changes. Snapshot 1 notes
Snapshot 2: fog, sky, and debug screen
Snapshot 2 improves render-distance fog: when Improved Transparency is enabled, the sky background and clouds behind terrain blend into the fog. The Overworld skybox’s lower half occludes celestial objects, and the F3 debug overlay has been redesigned for readability. Technical notes list Data Pack version 122.1 and Resource Pack version 99.0. Snapshot 2 notes
Quick Recap
How to try the test versions safely
- For Java: Open the Minecraft Launcher, select the Installations tab, and enable snapshots for an installation. Use a separate game folder or a backed-up world; Mojang warns that test versions can corrupt worlds.
- For Bedrock: Enable Preview or Beta on a supported platform. Minecraft lists Preview availability on Realms for Xbox, Windows 10/11, and iOS; Android players can use Betas through Google Play. Availability depends on platform.
- Keep test worlds separate from important saves: These are testing builds, and the winter features are explicitly experimental rather than stable content.
