How to Manage Money and Save While Working on a Cruise Ship

There is no universal cruise-ship savings figure. Use your contract, actual pay, transfer fees and onboard spending to build a realistic budget and track it each month.

There is no reliable, universal amount a cruise-ship worker can save: pay, contract terms, gratuities, payment fees and onboard costs vary. Start with the written contract and any collective bargaining agreement (CBA) that applies to your ship, then build a budget from the pay you actually receive—not a headline wage or assumed tips.

Start with the contract, not a salary estimate

Your individual employment contract and the agreement covering your vessel determine what you are owed. The International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) explains that an ITF agreement sets terms such as wage scales and working hours, while the individual contract connects a worker to the applicable agreement and records their own terms. Keep a copy and confirm which agreement covers your ship. ITF’s guide to agreements explains the distinction.

There is no single cruise-ship salary figure: ITF says wage rates depend on whether a vessel is nationally flagged or covered by an ITF agreement. Even a published minimum is not a prediction of what a particular cruise worker will take home. For context, ITF reports the following ILO/JMC basic monthly wage schedule for an able seafarer:

Effective date Basic monthly wage What the figure covers
1 January 2026 USD 690 ILO/JMC able-seafarer basic wage, as reported by ITF; not a universal cruise-worker salary.
1 January 2027 USD 704 ILO/JMC able-seafarer basic wage, as reported by ITF; not a universal cruise-worker salary.
1 January 2028 USD 715 ILO/JMC able-seafarer basic wage, as reported by ITF; not a universal cruise-worker salary.

ITF says the Joint Maritime Commission (JMC) agreed on these phased increases at its meetings on 14–15 April 2025. The schedule applies to the able-seafarer benchmark, not hotel, entertainment or every other shipboard role. Check the wage scale and terms that apply to your own position in your contract and agreement. ITF’s wage guidance and its announcement of the agreement provide the benchmark details.

Build a budget from the money that actually arrives

Before setting a savings target, write down the amounts and dates in your contract, then compare them with your pay statements. Keep fixed and variable income separate: count base pay and guaranteed overtime as specified, and include tips, gratuities, commissions or variable overtime only if the contract confirms how they are paid. Record deductions as well as gross pay.

Use this contract-level worksheet

  • Contract pay: Record base pay, guaranteed overtime, variable overtime, contract-confirmed gratuities or commissions, deductions and pay dates.
  • Money sent home: Note the amount, frequency and currency. Track exchange rates and every transfer or intermediary fee; compare the amount received at home with the amount debited from your account.
  • Onboard spending: Check your employer’s payment method and review actual charges. Track items such as Wi-Fi, shop purchases, drinks, cash withdrawals and port-day spending where applicable.
  • Home costs: Include bills, debt payments, family support and other commitments that continue while you are at sea.
  • Savings and buffer: Set a target after you have observed a full pay cycle and actual costs. Leave room for timing gaps and, if they fall to you, travel between home and the joining airport.

A paper planner can help organize the figures, but your contract and transaction records are the basis for checking them. Once you have a full pay cycle, use what happened—not an assumed industry average—to set or revise your target.

Check pay frequency, cards and transfer fees

Payment arrangements are employer-specific; do not assume another cruise line uses the same pay schedule, card, fees or onboard system. Princess Cruises, for example, says its shipboard staff are paid monthly in arrears using a Brightwell Crew Card. The company also says transfers to personal accounts may incur a fee and crew-area ATMs may charge fees. On the vessels described on its careers page, onboard purchases such as Wi-Fi, shop items and drinks are cashless. These are Princess-specific details, not an industry-wide standard. Check your employer’s current payment terms and the charges that apply to your account. Princess Cruises’ shipboard jobs page describes its arrangement.

Before relying on a card or remittance route, check the fee for transfers, ATM withdrawals and currency conversion, and confirm the amount that arrives in the destination account. Reconcile your planned transfers and purchases against bank or pay-card statements each month.

Protect your wages and keep records

ITF says wages should be paid at least monthly under Maritime Labour Convention requirements. It recommends a regular payment mechanism, checking that salary reaches the account and keeping bank statements. Do not accept an arrangement in which all wages accumulate until the end of the contract while you receive only small advances. ITF’s wage guidance outlines these safeguards.

  1. Keep your paperwork: Save your signed contract, the applicable CBA or agreement, pay statements, bank or card statements and records of transfers.
  2. Check deposits against the terms: Compare each payment with the amount and timing in your contract, and note any discrepancy.
  3. Raise a significant delay promptly: ITF advises workers whose salary is more than two weeks late to raise the matter with the captain.
  4. Seek help if wages remain unpaid: Contact an ITF inspector or support channel promptly, and gather evidence identifying your ship, your contract and the payments due.

ITF reports that its inspectors receive around 1,500 unpaid-wage complaints each year; the page does not assign that estimate a year. ITF also reports that inspectors recovered USD 58.1 million in owed wages in 2024. These figures underscore why it is useful to retain records; they do not establish an individual worker’s likelihood of nonpayment. ITF Global’s information on withholding pay gives the recovery and complaint figures.

Avoid upfront job and training charges

ITF warns job seekers not to pay an agent upfront to secure a shipboard job or to pay for required training. It says charging for this is illegal under the Maritime Labour Convention. Treat a demand for such payment as a warning sign and check with an ITF support channel before paying. ITF’s cruise-ship guidance explains this warning.

What a savings estimate can—and cannot—tell you

The available sources do not establish a typical cruise-worker savings amount, a common onboard-spending budget or a reliable salary comparison across companies. A personal estimate depends on the contract, pay received, deductions, transfer costs, spending and continuing obligations at home. Tax and remittance reporting also depend on details such as your residence, nationality, income and destination; the general employment guidance cited here cannot determine those obligations for an individual.
