How to Move to Southampton from Overseas: Visas, Housing and Practical Steps

Plan an overseas move to Southampton in the right order: confirm your immigration route, wait for approval, compare housing, and handle right to rent, council tax and utilities.

To move to Southampton from overseas, first identify the UK immigration route that fits your nationality, purpose and length of stay. Apply from outside the UK and wait for approval before travelling; then arrange accommodation, prepare for the right-to-rent check, and set up council tax, utilities and healthcare after arrival. Students also need to follow their university’s arrival and enrolment instructions.

1. Find the immigration route that fits your move

There is no single “Southampton visa.” Your route depends on why you are coming—such as study, sponsored work, family or settlement—as well as your nationality, intended stay and personal circumstances. Non-British and non-Irish nationals should start with GOV.UK’s visa and Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) checker, then follow the application instructions for the route it identifies.

Requirements, fees, processing times and permitted activities differ by route and can change. Check the official guidance for your own application rather than relying on a general moving checklist or assuming that another person’s visa will apply to you.

2. Apply and wait for approval before travelling

  1. Follow the selected route’s application steps. Complete the required identity checks and provide the evidence requested for that application.
  2. Wait for a decision before travelling. UK Visas and Immigration’s overseas application guidance, updated 9 September 2026, says applicants must not travel to the UK before their visa application is approved.
  3. Follow the decision instructions for proving your status. Check how to access and use your eVisa or other status evidence. The Home Office’s current guidance reflects the move toward eVisas and updated vignette practice; do not assume older advice about a physical biometric residence permit or visa vignette describes your case.

Where possible, avoid making non-refundable travel plans that depend on an undecided application. Approval and status evidence are also relevant to the separate landlord right-to-rent check.

3. Check whether the immigration health surcharge applies

Check the immigration health surcharge rules for the precise route and each person included in the application. GOV.UK says it usually applies to applications made from outside the UK for a visa or immigration application lasting more than six months, but exemptions apply. Having private insurance does not by itself remove a surcharge obligation where one is due.

Where the required surcharge is paid, NHS access generally begins on the visa start date. It does not make every health service free: prescriptions, dental treatment, eye tests and some other services can still involve charges.

4. Choose housing by total cost and fit

Decide whether university-managed accommodation, private student housing or a private tenancy best fits your move. Compare the whole arrangement rather than rent alone: what bills are included, the contract dates and length, furnishings, location and commute, deposit and other permitted upfront charges, and whether you can provide the status evidence needed for a right-to-rent check.

Option What to check
University halls or managed student accommodation Eligibility, contract dates and length, included bills or services, furnishings, location and arrival arrangements.
Private student housing Contract length against course dates, total cost, included bills, furnishings, location and deposit or other permitted charges.
Private tenancy Rent and bills, contract dates, furnishings, location, deposit and other permitted charges, and how the landlord will complete the right-to-rent check.

The official sources cited here do not establish a current typical rent for Southampton, so use current listings for the specific property type and area you are considering rather than relying on an unsupported city-wide average.

Understand right to rent in England

Right to rent is an England-specific check, separate from your visa application. Before granting a tenancy, a landlord must establish that a prospective tenant has the right to rent. Non-British and non-Irish citizens can generally show an eligible share code or original immigration documents. A landlord can use a share code to check whether you can rent and for how long.

If the check applies to you, make sure you can access your UK Visas and Immigration account and obtain a share code through the current official service where applicable. Immigration permission does not itself guarantee that a particular landlord will offer you a tenancy.

Check the deposit and other upfront charges

Current Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government tenancy-fees guidance says a tenancy deposit for a home with annual rent below £50,000 can be capped at five weeks’ rent. This is a statutory limit, not an estimate of Southampton rents. Check the current guidance and your tenancy terms before paying.

5. Set up council tax and utilities after moving in

Register with Southampton City Council

Register for council tax after moving into your Southampton home, even if you think you qualify for an exemption or discount. Southampton City Council says new residents still need to register; its process asks for details including tenancy or move-in dates and the adults in the household. The council says processing a change of address can take up to 21 days.

If you are a student who believes you qualify for an exemption, provide evidence of full-time registration as requested. The University of Southampton’s student advice warns students not to ignore council-tax bills while arranging an exemption.

Get utility billing onto the right dates

For a private tenancy, ask the landlord or agent which gas and electricity suppliers serve the property and which bills, if any, are included in the rent. On move-in, record the applicable meter readings and notify the suppliers of your move-in date and readings so billing can start from the correct point.

6. If you are moving to study at the University of Southampton

Use the University of Southampton’s current before-arrival and welcome guidance for student-specific visa advice, accommodation, enrolment, identity documents and local GP registration. The university recommends that UK and international students register with a local doctor or university health service.

The university’s airport meet-and-greet offer is limited to eligible first-time students staying in university halls or a named partner hall. Check the university’s current dates and conditions before relying on it; it is not a general arrival service for all Southampton newcomers.

7. A specialist accommodation report for some family applications

If you are sponsoring someone’s entry-clearance or settlement application, suitable accommodation may need to be evidenced. Southampton City Council offers a paid inspection and report service for that specific purpose. Its page lists an initial fee of £269 for one person, £189 for a repeat application within 12 months, and £93 for each additional person. These are council fees recorded in 2026 for the specialist report, not ordinary rental or moving costs; confirm the current charges and whether the report is relevant to your application with the council.
