Yes, one PS5 can support multiple people. The correct setup is to give each person a separate PS5 user and PlayStation account, then enable Console Sharing and Offline Play on the account that owns the household’s digital games or PlayStation Plus subscription. This keeps saves, trophies, friends, privacy settings, purchases, and parental controls separate while allowing eligible games and benefits to be shared on that console.
The menu names below reflect PlayStation’s U.S. support guidance reviewed in August 2026. PS5 system-software updates and regional settings may change some labels slightly.

What “multiple accounts” means on PS5
There are several related terms:
- PS5 user: A local profile saved on the console. It is what you select when someone starts using the PS5.
- PlayStation account: The online account linked to that profile. It holds the user’s online ID, trophies, friends, purchases, subscriptions, privacy settings, and account data.
- Family member: An account organized under a PlayStation family manager for parental controls and family management.
- Guest: A temporary or limited profile. It is unsuitable for someone who wants persistent saves, trophies, purchases, or a friends list.
Do not give several people one login. A shared account can mix saved data, trophies, messages, privacy settings, and purchases. Each regular player should use an individual account.
An existing PS4 PlayStation account can be used on PS5. Its trophies, friends, subscriptions, and other account information remain associated with that account rather than becoming part of a new PS5 profile.

How to add an existing account to a PS5
- Go to the PS5 home screen.
- Select the profile picture in the upper-right corner.
- Select Switch User.
- Select Add User.
- Select Get Started.
- Sign in with the person’s PlayStation account.
- Complete any email, verification, or device-authentication prompts.
PlayStation App-assisted sign-in may also be available during setup. Once complete, the account appears as its own selectable profile. Its saves, trophies, friends, settings, and account-specific content remain associated with that user.
How to create a new PlayStation account
- Select the profile picture on the PS5 home screen.
- Choose Switch User > Add User > Get Started.
- On the sign-in screen, select Create an Account.
- Enter the requested details and choose an online ID.
- Verify the email address.
You will generally need a date of birth, country or region, preferred language, sign-in email address, password, and online ID. Choose the country or region carefully: it normally cannot be changed after the account is created.
Creating an account is free and does not require payment details. Some games, online multiplayer features, subscriptions, and purchases have separate requirements. If an email address is already in use, recover or sign in to the existing account instead of creating another one.

How to switch between PS5 accounts
From the home screen:
- Select the profile picture.
- Select Switch User.
- Select the desired profile.
You can also press the PS button to open the Control Center, select the profile picture, choose Switch User, and select another profile.
Switching users is quicker and safer than repeatedly signing out and entering account credentials. It does not, however, transfer a game’s progress from one account to another. Always check the active profile before launching a game.
How saves, trophies, friends, and subscriptions are separated
PS5 user profiles are designed to keep people’s activity separate:

- A save created by one account should not be assumed to be available to another account.
- Trophies earned while the wrong profile is active normally stay on that account. They cannot normally be moved to the correct account.
- A second player may need to begin a separate save, depending on the game.
- Cloud storage is account-specific and may require an appropriate PlayStation Plus plan.
- Friends, messages, privacy settings, purchases, and subscriptions belong to the relevant PlayStation account.
If a save is missing, switch to the exact profile that created it before troubleshooting the game. Also check whether the save is on another console, was included in a supported transfer, or belongs to a different account’s cloud storage.
PS5-to-PS5 and PS4-to-PS5 transfer procedures can move supported user information, saved data, games, screenshots, and certain settings, but they do not merge account identities.

How to share digital games on one PS5
Use Console Sharing and Offline Play when a household shares one PS5. The account that purchased the digital games or holds the relevant PlayStation Plus subscription should enable it on the shared console:
- Sign in to the purchasing or subscribing account.
- Open Settings.
- Select Users and Accounts.
- Select Other.
- Select Console Sharing and Offline Play.
- Select Enable.
Other users on that PS5 can then play eligible purchased and downloaded games, including offline in supported circumstances. This shares access under the console’s licensing arrangement; it does not transfer ownership or merge libraries.
Important limits
- For an individual account, Console Sharing and Offline Play can be enabled on only one PS5 at a time.
- The purchasing account should remain on the console and the game must be downloaded or otherwise available under the applicable license.
- Sharing is not unrestricted access for friends using unrelated consoles.
- A subscription game may stop working if the subscription expires or the title leaves the relevant catalog.
- Offline access depends on the content’s license state and the sharing setting.
PlayStation does not support using this feature as ordinary game or PlayStation Plus sharing with a friend on another console.

Which PlayStation Plus benefits can be shared?
With Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled on one PS5, selected benefits may be available to other local users. Access still depends on the subscriber’s membership plan and the content’s availability.

Family accounts and child users
A PlayStation family is different from the list of local users on a PS5. Family management connects accounts for parental controls; each person should still use their own PS5 profile.
A family manager can manage:
- Playtime limits.
- Purchases using the family manager’s wallet.
- Access to games, videos, and apps.
- Messaging and voice chat.
- User-generated content, broadcasts, and pictures.
- Guardians who can help manage controls.
In the PS Family app, use Settings > Family Management > Add a child or Add an adult. Child accounts can also be created through the PS5 or Account Management. To add an adult through Account Management, the family manager can use Family Management > Add Family Member; the adult receives an email invitation and must accept it.
Child restrictions are tied to the child’s account and the family settings. A child account can access only content allowed by the applicable age and parental controls. Only the family manager can reset a child account’s password. When eligible, a child account can be upgraded to an adult account, but that upgrade cannot be reversed.

Secure a shared PS5
Set a login passcode for each adult profile
- Open Settings > Users and Accounts.
- Select Login Settings.
- Select Set a PS5 Login Passcode.
- Create a four-digit passcode.
Use a separate login passcode for each account. This protects private messages and purchases and helps prevent a child from opening an unrestricted adult profile. A PS5 login passcode is different from the console restriction passcode.
Require a password at checkout
- Open Settings > Users and Accounts.
- Select Account.
- Select Payment and Subscriptions.
- Select Purchase Settings.
- Turn on Require Password at Checkout.
This prompts for the account password whenever that account makes a PlayStation Store purchase. PlayStation notes that Password at Checkout is not compatible with accounts using passkeys, so choose the security method that fits the account.
Passkeys are an optional account-security feature, not a requirement for using multiple PS5 users. Never share account passwords, and sign out if you use your account on a friend’s, public, or temporary console.

Another account cannot play a digital game
- Confirm that the purchasing account is still on the PS5.
- Check Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play and confirm it is enabled.
- Confirm that the purchasing account actually bought the game.
- Check that any required PlayStation Plus subscription is active.
- Update the PS5 system software and check its internet connection.
- Confirm that the title is still included in the relevant Plus catalog or Monthly Plus offering.
- If the game shows a padlock, follow PlayStation’s license and padlock troubleshooting steps.
A second user’s save is missing
Switch to the exact profile that created the save. If it is still missing, check whether the save is on another console, was excluded from a transfer, or is stored in another account’s cloud storage. A publisher account inside a game is not necessarily the same as the active PS5 user.
Trophies went to the wrong person
Trophies are associated with the account active when they were earned. There is no normal process for moving them to another account. Use the correct profile from now on.
A child bypassed restrictions
Confirm that the child is using the child account, review Family Management settings, and set login passcodes on adult profiles. An unlocked adult profile can undermine otherwise correct parental controls.
Sharing is enabled on the wrong PS5
Disable Console Sharing and Offline Play on the current PS5, then enable it on the intended one. If the old console is inaccessible, Account Management can deactivate all devices remotely. PlayStation limits remote all-device deactivation to once every six months.
The account password is forgotten
Use the ordinary account-recovery flow from the PS5 sign-in screen or Account Management. For a child account, only the family manager can reset the password.

What you cannot do with multiple PS5 accounts
- You cannot use ordinary console settings to merge separate PlayStation accounts.
- You cannot move one account’s trophies, friends, purchases, or subscription history into another account.
- You cannot make every PlayStation Plus benefit available to every local user.
- You cannot use Console Sharing and Offline Play to provide unrestricted access across several unrelated consoles.
- You should not use one adult account for a child who needs reliable parental controls.
There is no normal consumer account-merging workflow. Exceptional support cases may differ, but separate accounts should be treated as permanently separate identities.

Removing a user versus resetting the PS5
Removing a local user from one PS5 is not the same as signing out, disabling Console Sharing, closing the online PlayStation account, or resetting the console.
Before removing a profile, make sure its saves and other needed data are backed up or transferred. Do not choose a full reset merely to remove one person. A PS5 reset deletes all user data and restores the console to its original state.
If you are preparing the PS5 for sale or giving it away, handle account deactivation and data removal deliberately, then use the full reset only after confirming that all required data has been transferred. Menu labels for removing an individual local user can change, so follow the current on-screen user-management controls rather than deleting the entire console.

Moving accounts to a new PS5
On a new PS5, each person can sign in with the same PlayStation account. That does not automatically create every account as a local user unless each account is signed in or included in a supported transfer.
For a full migration, PlayStation supports transferring user and account information, saved data, games, screenshots, and certain settings from another PS5. Supported PS5-to-PS5 transfers may also transfer login passcodes. The transfer still preserves separate account identities rather than combining them.
