How to Use a Keyboard and Mouse With Meta Quest

Meta Quest supports Bluetooth keyboards and mice in compatible apps, but pairing is not the same as game support or tracked-keyboard visualization. Here is how to connect, test, and troubleshoot them.

Meta Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest 3S can generally connect to Bluetooth keyboards and mice, but pairing does not make every Quest app or game compatible. A keyboard is most useful for typing in the Quest Browser and productivity apps. For PC gaming or desktop work, it is usually better to keep the keyboard and mouse connected to the computer. Keyboard tracking—the feature that shows a physical keyboard in passthrough or VR—is a separate feature with narrower headset, keyboard, and Horizon OS requirements.

What you need

  • A Meta Quest 2, Quest 3, or Quest 3S with current system software.
  • A keyboard or mouse that supports Bluetooth pairing. “Wireless” is not enough: devices using only Logitech Unifying, Logi Bolt, or another proprietary USB receiver are not automatically Bluetooth devices.
  • Charged batteries or a charged internal battery.
  • The device disconnected from nearby computers, phones, and tablets, or switched to an unused Bluetooth channel.
  • A clear physical surface for the mouse.

Pair one peripheral at a time. If the keyboard or mouse has several device channels, reserve one for Quest and another for your computer.

Pair a Bluetooth keyboard with Quest

  1. Turn on the keyboard.
  2. Choose an unused device channel if it has multiple channels.
  3. Hold the Bluetooth, pairing, or device-selection button until its indicator flashes. The exact button varies by model; some keyboards use keys marked 1, 2, or 3, while others use dedicated Easy-Switch buttons.
  4. On Quest, open Quick Settings, then Settings. Open the section labeled Devices or Bluetooth, and choose the control for adding or pairing a new Bluetooth device. Meta can move or rename these controls in Horizon OS updates.
  5. Select the keyboard when it appears.
  6. If Quest shows a passcode, type it on the physical keyboard being paired, then press Enter or Return on that keyboard. Do not enter the code only with Quest’s virtual keyboard. Apple documents the same general passcode behavior for its wireless keyboards: Apple wireless keyboard pairing instructions.

When setup is successful, the keyboard should appear as connected in Quest’s Bluetooth settings.

Pair a Bluetooth mouse

  1. Switch on the mouse and press its Bluetooth or device-selection button. On many models, the button is on the underside.
  2. Hold the button or select a device channel until the indicator flashes.
  3. Open Quest’s Bluetooth settings using Quick Settings > Settings, then the relevant Devices or Bluetooth section.
  4. Select the mouse and wait for it to show as connected.

Mouse movement, a visible pointer, scrolling, and clicking depend on the Quest environment and the application. A successful Bluetooth connection does not guarantee that every app will display or accept a mouse cursor.

Test the connection before opening a game

  1. Open the Meta Quest Browser.
  2. Select the address bar or another text field.
  3. Type a short phrase with the physical keyboard.
  4. Move the mouse, click, and test its scroll wheel on a long webpage.
  5. Try the devices in the app where you actually intend to use them.

This test separates a Bluetooth problem from an application-support problem. If the keyboard works in Browser but not in a game, the game probably does not support keyboard input. If the mouse connects but does not move, the current interface may not support a pointer even though pairing succeeded.

Where keyboard and mouse input works

Directly paired peripherals can be useful in the Quest Browser, text-entry fields, and compatible productivity or 2D applications. Native Quest games are different. Many are designed for Touch controllers, hand tracking, or gamepads and will ignore a paired keyboard or mouse. Do not assume that a game supports these devices unless its developer specifically says so.

PC VR games can support keyboard and mouse because the game is running on the computer. In that situation, the computer running the game normally needs access to the peripherals. Pairing them only to Quest may not provide input to the PC.

Keyboard tracking is not the same as keyboard pairing

A Quest can accept typing from a keyboard without showing a 3D version of that keyboard in passthrough or VR. Tracked-keyboard visualization is a separate feature that depends on the headset model, keyboard model, Horizon OS version, lighting, placement, and application support.

For the current supported-device information, check Meta’s tracked-keyboard support page. Older advice should not be treated as a current universal list. For example, a historical Meta community response identified the Logitech K830 as the only compatible tracked keyboard for Quest 2 at that time; that does not establish the current compatibility list.

When tracking is supported:

  • Place the keyboard flat where the headset cameras can see it.
  • Use even lighting and avoid strong glare.
  • Very dark keycaps, reflective surfaces, unusual layouts, or poor lighting can reduce tracking reliability.
  • Tracking may work in the Quest home environment but not appear inside every third-party app.
  • A keyboard suitable for visual tracking is not automatically the most comfortable keyboard for long typing sessions.

A mouse should not be assumed to receive the same virtual tracked-keyboard representation.

Using keyboard and mouse with a Windows PC

For Windows productivity, there are two different connection arrangements.

Peripherals paired to the PC

The keyboard and mouse remain connected to Windows while Quest displays the computer through a supported remote-desktop workflow. This is often the simplest arrangement for PC gaming and desktop work, and it avoids using Quest’s Bluetooth connection for devices that the computer needs directly.

Microsoft’s Windows App input documentation describes physical Bluetooth keyboards and mice as input methods for Windows App for Meta Quest. Microsoft announced general availability of its Windows and Meta Quest immersive productivity workflow on October 30, 2025, involving Windows 11, Meta Quest 3 or Quest 3S, Windows App for Meta Quest, and Mixed Reality Link: Microsoft’s announcement.

Peripherals paired to Quest

Quest receives the input directly, which can be useful for Browser typing and Quest-native applications. The computer will not automatically receive that input. The selected remote-desktop software must forward it, and input forwarding can fail even when the devices appear connected. Microsoft community reports document this kind of remote-machine failure: example discussion.

If a remote Windows application does not respond, test the keyboard and mouse directly on the PC first. Then decide whether the software expects the peripherals paired to Windows rather than to Quest.

Can you use a USB keyboard, mouse, or wireless receiver?

Possibly, but USB is a compatibility-sensitive fallback rather than the best first method. Quest’s USB-C port does not guarantee that every keyboard, mouse, wireless receiver, or hub will work automatically.

  • The adapter must support USB data, not charging only.
  • A receiver-only wireless keyboard or mouse requires the receiver, a suitable adapter, and compatibility with the headset.
  • Some receivers and hubs draw more power than expected.
  • A wired setup can complicate charging unless a compatible hub and power-delivery arrangement are used.

For most users, a normal Bluetooth keyboard is simpler. Treat a USB setup as a device-specific experiment unless Meta or the accessory maker confirms compatibility.

Fix common problems

The device does not appear

  • Confirm that it is actually in pairing mode, not merely switched on.
  • Turn off Bluetooth on nearby computers, phones, and tablets that may reconnect automatically.
  • Choose another device channel on a multi-device keyboard or mouse.
  • Replace or charge the batteries.
  • Check that it supports Bluetooth rather than only a proprietary USB receiver.
  • Switch the peripheral and Quest off and on, then retry.
  • Remove an old Quest pairing if one exists and start again.

Quest asks for a code but pairing fails

Restart pairing, type the displayed code on the physical keyboard, and press Return or Enter on that same keyboard. Keep the keyboard discoverable and close to the headset. A code can expire if the keyboard leaves pairing mode.

It says connected, but typing does nothing

Test the keyboard in the Quest Browser and select a text field manually. If Browser works, the original app may not accept physical keyboards. Other possibilities include a mismatched layout, a stale connection, or a keyboard that has connected to another device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The mouse connects but there is no cursor

The current environment or app may not display a pointer. The mouse may also be paired to Quest while the intended PC application expects it on the computer. Confirm that the mouse is a Bluetooth model rather than a receiver-only model, then test it in Browser.

The keyboard types but is not visible in VR

This is normally a tracking-compatibility issue, not a pairing failure. Check Meta’s supported tracked-keyboard information, update Horizon OS, place the keyboard flat in clear view, improve the lighting, and try the Quest home environment before testing a third-party app.

The keyboard works in Browser but not a game

That is usually expected. The game must implement keyboard and mouse support independently of Quest’s Bluetooth pairing.

Keyboard layout and special keys

ANSI and ISO keyboards can place keys differently, and the Quest language setting may not match the legends printed on the physical keyboard. Non-US layouts can therefore produce unexpected symbols. Apple keyboards may also use Command and Option where a Windows-focused workflow expects Ctrl and Alt. Function keys, media controls, brightness keys, and vendor-specific shortcuts may not be recognized.

If a keyboard has no obvious pairing indicator, consult its manufacturer’s manual for the correct channel and pairing sequence.

What to look for when buying

  • Bluetooth, not just wireless: verify the exact model supports Bluetooth pairing.
  • Multi-device switching: useful when moving between Quest and a computer.
  • A standard layout: easier for Browser typing and Windows work.
  • Compact size: more convenient if the keyboard must remain visible in passthrough.
  • Clear key legends and suitable lighting: helpful for both typing and camera tracking.
  • A practical mouse: choose one that works comfortably on your available physical surface.

Examples of Bluetooth options readers may consider include the Logitech MX Keys Mini, Logitech MX Keys S, Logitech Pebble Keys 2 K380s, and Apple Magic Keyboard. These product pages establish their respective product details, but none should be assumed to support tracked-keyboard visualization without checking Meta’s current list.

For mice, the Logitech MX Anywhere 3S and Apple Magic Mouse are examples of Bluetooth-oriented options. The latter’s touch-based scrolling and macOS-focused behavior may be less convenient for Windows or Quest workflows.

Alternatives to a physical keyboard and mouse

Quest also supports Touch controllers, hand tracking, its virtual keyboard, and Bluetooth gamepads in compatible contexts. Link, Air Link, or a remote-desktop application can provide access to a PC’s native keyboard and mouse. Logitech’s MX Ink is another spatial-input option, not a keyboard or conventional mouse replacement. Logitech lists it for Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest 3S with Meta Quest OS V69 or later: compatibility details.
