Use Docker Compose as the control plane for a multi-container VPS. Define each service in a compose.yaml file, keep inter-service traffic on private Compose networks, store databases in named volumes, and operate the stack with the docker compose command. This gives you one repeatable definition for starting, updating, inspecting, and recovering a group of containers on one server.

Why Docker Compose is the right control plane on one VPS

Docker describes Compose as “a tool for defining and running multi-container applications.” On a single VPS, that means one project file can describe your web front end, API, background worker, database, cache, reverse proxy, networks, volumes, environment values, and lifecycle behavior.

A VPS is a supported Compose deployment model and is the simplest place to run a complete application stack. Compose is not a multi-server scheduler: every service in this design runs on the same host. If the workload later needs to span several machines, evaluate a multi-host orchestrator instead of treating one VPS as a cluster.

  • One source of truth: service definitions, network membership, mounts, ports, and restart behavior live in YAML rather than in a sequence of ad-hoc shell commands.
  • Repeatable changes: the same file can be used to recreate a stack after a VPS replacement or Docker update.
  • Service discovery: containers on a Compose network reach one another by service name, such as db or redis.
  • Separate state from compute: named volumes keep database files outside the disposable container layer.

Prepare the VPS before creating containers

Install the required software

Install Docker Engine and the Docker Compose plugin using the packages recommended for your VPS operating system. Confirm both components are available before deploying:

docker version
docker compose version

Run Docker commands with the account and permissions you intend to use for deployments. Keep the operating system, Docker Engine, Compose plugin, and image cache updated through a documented maintenance process.

Create a dedicated project directory

Keep the Compose project in a directory with controlled permissions, for example /opt/my-stack. Store the Compose files, deployment notes, and any non-secret configuration there. Do not place passwords, private keys, or API tokens in a source-controlled YAML file or inside a container image.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan host capacity and exposure

List the services you actually need before writing YAML. A typical stack might contain a reverse proxy, web application, API, worker, database, and cache. Monitor the VPS’s memory, CPU, disk space, container logs, and volume growth as the stack runs; Compose does not make an undersized host larger.

Publish only ports that must be reachable from the internet. A database or cache normally needs no host port at all. Restrict the VPS firewall to the required public ports and use the host’s private networking for everything else.

Define every service in compose.yaml

Create compose.yaml with one service per container. The following is a structural example; replace images, commands, environment values, and health checks with those required by your application.

services:
  proxy:
    image: nginx:stable
    ports:
      - '80:80'
      - '443:443'
    depends_on:
      - web
    networks:
      - frontend

  web:
    build: ./web
    environment:
      API_URL: http://api:8080
    depends_on:
      - api
    networks:
      - frontend
      - backend

  api:
    build: ./api
    environment:
      DATABASE_URL: postgres://app_user:change-me@db:5432/app_db
      REDIS_URL: redis://redis:6379
    depends_on:
      - db
      - redis
    networks:
      - backend

  worker:
    build: ./worker
    environment:
      DATABASE_URL: postgres://app_user:change-me@db:5432/app_db
      REDIS_URL: redis://redis:6379
    depends_on:
      - db
      - redis
    networks:
      - backend

  db:
    image: postgres:16
    volumes:
      - db_data:/var/lib/postgresql/data
    networks:
      - backend

  redis:
    image: redis:7
    networks:
      - backend

networks:
  frontend:
  backend:
    internal: true

volumes:
  db_data:

The example exposes only the proxy. The web, API, worker, database, and cache communicate over Compose networks using their service names and container ports. The password shown in the example is deliberately not suitable for production; inject real credentials through the deployment environment or Compose-supported secret mechanisms.

Use immutable image references

For production, use an approved image tag or digest and record how it is updated. A floating tag can change between deployments, making a rollback difficult. Build application images in a controlled process and promote a known image reference to the VPS.

Keep development mounts out of production

Bind mounts such as .:/app are useful for local editing but can expose source code and overwrite files installed in an image. Put development-only mounts in a separate override file and omit them from the production deployment.

Design Compose networking correctly

Use service names, not container IP addresses

Compose creates a project network and registers each service in internal DNS. If the API connects to PostgreSQL, use a connection string such as postgres://db:5432 (with the appropriate credentials and database name), not the database container’s IP address. The host port is for traffic entering from outside the Compose network; it is not the address an internal service should use.

Container IP addresses can change whenever a service is recreated. Applications should resolve the service name again and reconnect when a connection is lost. Hard-coded IPs turn an ordinary image update into an outage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Segment public and private traffic

Use separate networks when services have different trust boundaries:

  • Frontend network: attach the reverse proxy and the application components that must receive proxy traffic.
  • Backend network: attach the application, worker, database, and cache.
  • Internal backend network: set internal: true when the network should have no default gateway for external connectivity. This is useful for databases that must not reach or be reached directly from the internet.

Attach the proxy only to the frontend network, the application to both frontend and backend, and the database only to backend. This limits accidental paths without requiring every service to publish a host port.

Understand ports and exposure

A declaration such as '443:443' maps a host port to a container port and makes that port available through the VPS interface. A service with no ports entry can still be reached by peers on its Compose network. Use host firewall rules in addition to Compose configuration; removing a port mapping does not replace host-level security controls.

Make data persistent with named volumes

Containers are replaceable. Database files, uploaded media, and other state should live in named volumes or an explicitly managed external storage system. In the example, db_data is mounted at PostgreSQL’s data directory, so a recreated database container reuses the existing files.

  • A named volume normally survives container deletion and is reused by later Compose starts.
  • A volume can be mounted read-only for a consumer that only needs to read data.
  • Removing a container is not the same as deleting its volume.
  • docker compose down should not be treated as a backup operation.

Back up volumes with a procedure appropriate to the database or file format, store copies outside the VPS, and test restoration separately. If data must be shared across machines, consider an external storage driver such as NFS or an object-storage-backed driver; that is a storage decision, not something Compose’s default local volume automatically provides.

Start, inspect, and stop the complete stack

Run these commands from the directory containing compose.yaml:

  1. Validate the rendered configuration: docker compose config. Check the resolved services, networks, volumes, and environment substitutions before creating containers.
  2. Build and start in the background: docker compose up -d --build. Compose creates the networks and volumes declared by the project and starts the services.
  3. Check service state: docker compose ps. Confirm that expected containers are running and that published ports match the plan.
  4. Follow all project logs: docker compose logs -f. Press Ctrl-C to stop following logs; this does not stop containers.
  5. Inspect one service: docker compose logs -f api or docker compose ps api when diagnosing a specific component.
  6. Stop and remove containers: docker compose down. Named volumes are a separate resource and should be removed only when you have deliberately decided to destroy their data.

Use the service name at the end of a command to focus an operation. Avoid deleting volumes during routine restarts; volume removal is an irreversible data decision unless a verified backup exists.

Use a production override instead of editing away development settings

Keep a base file for shared service definitions and a production file for deployment-specific changes. Docker documents layering files for production-specific adjustments. Start the resulting stack with:

docker compose -f compose.yaml -f compose.production.yaml up -d

The production file should make the operational differences explicit:

  • remove source-code bind mounts used only for development;
  • set production environment values and host port mappings;
  • switch to approved immutable image tags or digests;
  • add a restart policy such as restart: always where automatic recovery is appropriate;
  • configure log rotation or send logs to an aggregation service;
  • keep databases and caches on private networks without public port mappings.

Check the merged result with docker compose -f compose.yaml -f compose.production.yaml config before applying it. The command shows what Compose will actually run after both files are combined.

Update one service without redeploying everything

A focused release reduces the blast radius of an application change. Build only the changed service, then recreate that service without restarting its dependencies:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
docker compose build web
docker compose up --no-deps -d web

This pattern is appropriate when the web image changed but the database, cache, and other services should remain untouched. Verify the new container with docker compose ps web and inspect docker compose logs -f web. If the service cannot start, revert to the previously approved image and investigate the application logs before changing unrelated containers.

A full-stack update is appropriate when several services must change together, a network definition changed, or a shared API contract requires coordinated deployment. Apply it from the production file and monitor each service rather than assuming that a successful Compose command means the application is healthy.

Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
  • Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
  • Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.

Give each service only the networks, volumes, and credentials it needs. A worker that does not serve HTTP should not publish a host port. A read-only consumer should receive a read-only volume mount. Keep administrative interfaces bound to a private interface or an authenticated access path rather than exposing them through the public proxy.

Backups and recovery are separate from container restarts

Back up named volumes

Identify every stateful volume with docker volume ls and document which service owns it. Follow a consistent backup schedule for databases and uploaded files, retain copies away from the VPS, and record encryption and access controls for those copies.

Test restoration

A backup is useful only if it can be restored. Periodically create a clean test volume or recovery host, restore the data, start the dependent service, and verify that the application can read and write it. Keep restoration instructions with the deployment documentation.

Recover after container loss

Recreating a stateless container should use the same image and Compose configuration. Recreating a stateful service should additionally mount its existing named volume and follow the database’s recovery procedure. Never add a volume-deletion flag to a routine restart command.

Monitor the VPS, not just the Compose status

docker compose ps tells you whether containers are running; it does not prove that the application is serving correct responses. Monitor:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • host memory and CPU pressure;
  • available disk space and growth of named volumes;
  • container restart counts and health-check failures;
  • log volume, retention, and rotation;
  • application-level errors and response checks;
  • the age and success of backups.

Set resource and log policies appropriate to the VPS capacity. A runaway log or a full database volume can take down otherwise healthy containers. Alert before the host reaches exhaustion, and document which service can be paused or scaled down first during an incident.

Single-server Compose versus other deployment choices

Decision Single VPS with Compose Alternative and trade-off
Number of hosts All services run on one server; simple networking and operations. Multi-host orchestration is for workloads that must schedule services across several servers and adds operational complexity.
State storage Named local volumes are easy to mount and reuse on the same VPS. External or shared storage supports cross-machine access but introduces its own availability, latency, and backup concerns.
Network layout Compose’s default network provides service-name DNS with minimal setup. Segmented frontend/backend networks provide stronger isolation and require deliberate service attachment.
Release scope Targeted commands can rebuild and recreate one service. Full-stack redeployment is clearer when several services or shared contracts must change together.
Operations model You control the VPS, firewall, Docker updates, backups, and monitoring. A managed hosting platform can reduce host administration but limits some low-level control and has provider-specific behavior.

Troubleshoot common failures

A service cannot connect to another service

  • Check that both services share a Compose network.
  • Use the Compose service name and container port, not a host port or old container IP.
  • Read the dependent service’s logs and confirm it is listening on the expected interface and port.
  • Restart the client so it resolves the service name again after a recreation.

The database appears empty after an update

  • Inspect the service definition and confirm the expected named volume is still mounted at the database data path.
  • Check whether a different project directory or project name created a second volume.
  • Do not delete any volume while investigating; locate and verify the backup first.

A container exits immediately

  • Run docker compose ps and inspect docker compose logs service_name.
  • Check required environment values, file permissions, image architecture, and dependency availability.
  • Fix the configuration and recreate the service rather than repeatedly restarting a failing process.

The VPS runs out of disk

  • Inspect Docker logs, unused images, and volume growth.
  • Enable rotation or aggregation for high-volume logs.
  • Remove unused images only after confirming that the running containers and rollback images are not needed.
  • Expand the VPS or move suitable data to managed external storage when the workload’s state no longer fits the host.

Operational checklist

  • Docker Engine and the Compose plugin are installed and kept current.
  • The project has a reviewed compose.yaml and a production override.
  • Only internet-facing services publish host ports.
  • Internal connections use service names, never container IP addresses.
  • Databases and caches are on private or internal networks.
  • Stateful services use named volumes or documented external storage.
  • Secrets are injected at deployment time rather than committed to source or baked into images.
  • Production images use immutable tags or digests and have a rollback plan.
  • Restart, log-rotation, monitoring, and firewall rules are configured for the VPS.
  • Volume backups are stored away from the host and restoration has been tested.
  • Updates are performed with either a targeted service command or a deliberate full-stack deployment.
