How to Manage Multiple Ubuntu Servers Together From One Place

By VGSources Team 11 min read

For an existing fleet of Ubuntu servers, use Canonical Landscape as the central operating console. Install a Landscape Client on every server, then manage inventory, monitoring, security updates, packages, repositories, remote scripts, users, and permissions from the Landscape web portal or API. Add Ansible when you need repeatable configuration or application deployment, and add MAAS when you must discover, provision, deploy, and release physical or virtual machines.

What the central-management setup looks like

Managing several Ubuntu machines independently creates the same risks repeatedly: one host misses a security update, a configuration drifts, an account remains active after a role changes, or an administrator runs a corrective command on only part of the fleet. A central design gives you one inventory, one set of maintenance decisions, and an auditable way to apply them.

The most practical division of responsibility is:

  • Landscape is the continuous Ubuntu estate-management layer. It keeps a persistent view of client state and connects package and security work with Ubuntu-specific information.
  • Ansible is the repeatable configuration and deployment layer. It connects over SSH without an installed agent and applies desired state from YAML playbooks.
  • MAAS is the infrastructure-lifecycle layer. It discovers machines, commissions them, deploys Ubuntu, controls power and network boot, troubleshoots capacity, and releases or redeploys systems.

If your servers are already running Ubuntu, start with Landscape or Ansible. If the project begins with bare metal or frequently reallocated virtual machines, place MAAS before those tools in the lifecycle.

What Landscape manages from one place

Landscape is designed for ongoing administration after machines are deployed. A client runs on each managed Ubuntu system and communicates with the central Landscape Server. Administrators work in the web portal or through the API rather than signing in to every host for routine actions.

Inventory and health

Landscape maintains hardware and system details for registered clients. That gives an operator a current list of machines, their roles, installed software, and reported state instead of a spreadsheet that ages as soon as a server changes.

Monitoring and alerts

Central monitoring and alerts surface conditions that need attention. Grouping systems by environment, service, or maintenance window lets you distinguish an isolated host problem from a pattern affecting an entire tier.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Packages and security updates

Use Landscape to install, remove, and upgrade packages across selected machines. Its Ubuntu security context connects update work to security notices, so patching can be planned around the exposure and maintenance window rather than handled as an unstructured series of SSH sessions.

Remote scripts and repositories

Remote scripts handle controlled actions that are not represented by a package operation. Landscape also manages repository configuration, which helps keep a fleet on approved software sources and prevents an individual administrator from silently introducing a different repository.

Users and delegated access

User management and role-based access control let you separate duties. For example, an operations group can receive permission to inspect systems and run approved maintenance while a smaller group retains authority to change repositories or manage access.

Landscape, Ansible, and MAAS compared

Tool Primary job Connection model Best interface When it operates Scope
Landscape Continuous Ubuntu system management Client installed on each managed machine, connected to a central server Web portal and API Ongoing monitoring, maintenance, policy, and reporting Ubuntu estate, packages, security updates, repositories, scripts, users, and RBAC
Ansible Desired-state automation and orchestration Agentless SSH execution CLI and YAML playbooks On-demand or scheduled playbook runs Baseline configuration, application deployment, and mixed operating-system fleets
MAAS Infrastructure provisioning and lifecycle control MAAS-managed discovery, power, network-boot, and deployment services Web UI, CLI, and API Provisioning, commissioning, troubleshooting, release, and redeployment events Bare metal, virtual machines, and pre-deployed systems

These are complementary roles, not three interchangeable dashboards. Landscape is the strongest fit when the central question is “What is the state of all my Ubuntu servers, and what maintenance should I apply?” Ansible is the stronger fit when the question is “How do I make every host conform to this configuration?” MAAS is the fit when the question is “How do I turn available capacity into deployed machines and return it to the pool later?”

A practical end-to-end architecture

For a new environment that includes infrastructure lifecycle, use this sequence:

  1. MAAS: discover and commission physical servers or prepare virtual-machine capacity; deploy the required Ubuntu image.
  2. Ansible: establish the operating baseline, SSH policy, users, repositories, packages, services, and application prerequisites. Keep playbooks in version control.
  3. Landscape: register the deployed systems and operate them continuously through monitoring, security updates, package actions, repositories, scripts, inventory, and delegated permissions.

For existing servers, skip the MAAS stage unless you are changing the underlying provisioning process. You can register the current machines with Landscape first, then use Ansible to standardize them without waiting for a rebuild.

Step-by-step: bring existing Ubuntu servers under one console

1. Define the fleet and its boundaries

List every Ubuntu host that should be managed and record its environment, service role, ownership, maintenance window, and recovery path. Separate production, staging, and development before you apply a group-wide action. Decide which systems must remain isolated or receive updates only during a change window.

This inventory is an operational boundary, not merely a naming exercise. A production database and a disposable test server may run the same Ubuntu release but should not share an unrestricted maintenance target.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Establish secure identity and connectivity

Landscape requires a client on each managed machine. Ansible requires SSH access and credentials that can perform the intended tasks, usually with privilege escalation controlled by your security policy. Use individual administrator identities, protect private keys, and avoid a shared account that makes actions impossible to attribute.

Confirm that the central services can reach the clients and that administrators can reach the Ansible targets over SSH. Document firewall rules, proxy requirements, DNS names, and the account used for initial enrollment before attempting a fleet-wide change.

3. Build a repeatable baseline with Ansible

Use Ansible for the configuration that should be reproducible: administrator accounts, SSH settings, approved repositories, required packages, service enablement, and application prerequisites. Store the playbooks and inventory in version control, review changes, and test against a small group before expanding.

A useful playbook structure separates common controls from role-specific settings. A baseline role can enforce access and package policy, while separate roles configure a web tier, worker tier, or database tier. This avoids copying slightly different shell commands between servers and gives you a documented desired state to reapply after recovery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Install and register the Landscape Client

Install the Landscape Client on each Ubuntu machine and register it with the central Landscape Server. Complete enrollment in a controlled batch so that a registration mistake does not place every host in the wrong environment. Verify that each client reports its hardware and system details and appears in the expected group.

Where possible, have Ansible perform the repeatable installation and registration steps. Canonical documents this as a complementary workflow: Ansible provisions a machine and installs or registers the Landscape client, after which Landscape supplies the interactive monitoring and maintenance view.

5. Organize clients for safe actions

Create groups that match real operating decisions, such as environment, application role, region, or maintenance window. A host can be selected because it belongs to the web tier, because it is in staging, or because it is approved for a particular patch window. Avoid one giant group whose name gives no indication of impact.

Give teams only the Landscape permissions they need. Role-based access control is especially useful when a help-desk or application team should be able to inspect status and run an approved script but not alter repositories or change user privileges.

6. Establish a maintenance rhythm

Use Landscape’s inventory and alerts to identify exceptions, then schedule package and security actions by group. Start with a representative subset, observe the result, and expand to the remaining systems. Record the change window, target group, expected reboot behavior, and rollback or recovery procedure.

Use remote scripts for narrowly defined tasks that have been reviewed and tested. Keep the script’s purpose, required privileges, expected output, and safe rerun behavior documented. A central button does not make an unsafe script safe; it only makes a mistake easier to repeat.

How to patch and update many servers safely

Prepare

  • Identify which Ubuntu machines are affected and divide them by service role and maintenance window.
  • Check Landscape alerts and package state so that exceptions are visible before the change.
  • Confirm that backups, snapshots, or application-level recovery procedures exist where the service requires them.
  • Decide whether a reboot is allowed and how traffic will be drained from each tier.

Canary and expand

Apply the update to a small canary group first. Validate service health, application behavior, logs, and connectivity from the same monitoring systems used in production. If the canaries are healthy, proceed in waves rather than selecting the entire fleet in one action.

Handle failures as a separate path

If one host fails, remove it from the next wave and investigate it individually. Do not repeatedly rerun a fleet-wide action in the hope that the outlier will recover. Use Landscape’s reported state to identify the failed package or client condition, and use Ansible when the fix is a configuration change that should be applied consistently to the affected role.

When MAAS belongs in the design

MAAS is appropriate when server management begins before Ubuntu is installed. It can discover and commission hardware, control power and network boot, deploy Ubuntu images, configure machines, troubleshoot them, and release capacity for later use. Its scope includes bare-metal servers, virtual machines, and systems that have already been pre-deployed.

Provisioning flow

  1. Discover available hardware or virtual-machine capacity in MAAS.
  2. Commission machines so hardware and network information are known and the systems are ready for deployment.
  3. Deploy the selected Ubuntu image and apply the required machine-level settings.
  4. Pass the deployed host to Ansible for baseline and application configuration.
  5. Register the resulting Ubuntu system with Landscape for continuous operations.
  6. When capacity is no longer needed, release or redeploy it through MAAS instead of manually rebuilding each machine.

Do not introduce MAAS solely to obtain a monitoring dashboard for already-running servers. That adds an infrastructure-lifecycle system without addressing the immediate operating task; Landscape or Ansible is the more direct starting point.

Choosing a Landscape deployment model

Canonical documents two broad Landscape patterns. A single-server deployment places the central services together and is suited to a small environment where simplicity is more important than distributing failure domains. A multi-server deployment uses HAProxy and multiple instances of supporting services to provide a scalable or high-availability arrangement.

Requirement Single-server pattern Multi-server pattern
Operational goal Simple central management for a small environment Scale and higher availability for a larger or more critical environment
Service placement Central services consolidated on one server Supporting services distributed across multiple instances behind HAProxy
Failure consideration The central server is a concentrated dependency Capacity and failure handling are designed across multiple servers
Selection criterion Lower architectural complexity Requirement for resilience, growth, or service separation

Choose the pattern from the number and criticality of managed systems, the availability objective, and the operational skill available to maintain the supporting services. The model should be designed for the Landscape release you deploy; infrastructure limits and requirements can change between releases.

Landscape or Ansible: which should you use?

Choose Landscape first when

  • Your main need is one continuously updated view of Ubuntu machines.
  • Security notices, package state, repository control, monitoring, and alerts are central to the job.
  • Operators need a web portal or API for interactive maintenance and delegated access.
  • You want to run controlled scripts and user-management actions against selected groups.

Choose Ansible first when

  • You need a repeatable baseline for newly built or existing machines.
  • Application deployment and orchestration are more important than persistent inventory.
  • You manage Ubuntu alongside other operating systems and want one SSH-based automation approach.
  • Your team works primarily from reviewed YAML playbooks and a command-line workflow.

Use both when

Most production fleets benefit from both tools. Let Ansible define and reapply configuration, while Landscape supplies the Ubuntu-specific operational view and interactive maintenance. There is no official Landscape-Ansible integration documented by Canonical, so treat them as complementary systems connected by your operating process: Ansible can install and register the client, and Landscape can then report on and maintain the resulting host.

Security and governance controls

  • Separate duties: use Landscape RBAC to divide viewing, routine maintenance, repository changes, and user administration.
  • Minimize credentials: use named SSH identities for Ansible and avoid embedding long-lived secrets in playbooks or scripts.
  • Version everything repeatable: keep Ansible playbooks, inventories, and remote scripts under review and change control.
  • Group by blast radius: make production, staging, and development distinct targets and require an explicit choice for high-impact actions.
  • Stage changes: canary updates and configuration changes before broad deployment.
  • Retain evidence: record who approved a change, which group received it, when it ran, and what failed.
  • Plan recovery: know how to remove a bad package, restore a service, reimage a machine through MAAS, or temporarily exclude a host from an automated wave.

Troubleshooting common management failures

A server is missing from Landscape

Check that the Landscape Client is installed, registered to the intended server, and able to communicate through the network path. Verify the machine’s identity and group placement before attempting another action. If Ansible can reach the host but Landscape cannot, investigate the client-to-server path rather than changing the playbook.

Ansible cannot connect

Confirm DNS or address resolution, SSH reachability, the selected account, key permissions, and required privilege escalation. Test one host from the intended control environment, then correct the inventory or credentials before rerunning against a group.

Package state differs between systems

Use Landscape inventory and package reporting to identify which hosts differ, then determine whether the cause is a repository difference, a held package, a failed prior action, or intentional role-specific variation. Correct the common policy with Ansible and use Landscape for the controlled update operation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A fleet action produced mixed results

Stop expanding the change. Divide successful and failed hosts into separate groups, capture the reported errors, and validate the service on a canary host after remediation. A mixed result is a signal to narrow the target and inspect the exception, not to repeat the same broad action.

A machine must be rebuilt

When the problem is operating-system or hardware lifecycle rather than a package or configuration defect, use MAAS to release and redeploy the capacity where MAAS manages that infrastructure. Reapply the baseline with Ansible and register the fresh Ubuntu deployment with Landscape.

A decision checklist

  1. Are the machines already running Ubuntu? If yes, begin with Landscape or Ansible; if no, evaluate MAAS.
  2. Do you need persistent inventory, Ubuntu security context, monitoring, alerts, repositories, and RBAC? Choose Landscape.
  3. Do you need repeatable desired state, application deployment, or mixed-OS orchestration? Choose Ansible.
  4. Do you need hardware discovery, commissioning, network boot, power control, deployment, release, or redeployment? Choose MAAS.
  5. Will one central Landscape server meet your availability objective, or do you need the documented multi-server pattern with HAProxy and multiple supporting-service instances?
  6. Can every high-impact action be tested on a canary group and recovered if it fails?

Bottom line for an Ubuntu fleet

Use Landscape as the central place for day-to-day Ubuntu estate operations, Ansible as the repeatable configuration engine, and MAAS only when infrastructure provisioning and recycling are part of the problem. The combination turns server management into a lifecycle: provision capacity when needed, configure it consistently, then monitor and maintain every Ubuntu system from a controlled portal or API.
