The 2026 PHP baseline for WordPress
WordPress.org recommends PHP 8.3 or greater, MariaDB 10.11 or greater or MySQL 8.0 or greater, and HTTPS. WordPress still runs on PHP 7.4 and later, but versions below the current recommendation are legacy releases and may no longer receive security fixes from PHP itself.

The WordPress Core clarification published in May 2026 states that the minimum recommended PHP version remains 8.3 and the minimum supported version is 7.4. For a production deployment, the Hosting Handbook recommends PHP 8.4. PHP 8.4 and 8.5 are in active support; PHP 8.3 entered security-only support on 31 December 2025, and PHP 8.2 reaches end of life on 31 December 2026. WordPress 7.0 and 7.1 require PHP 7.4 or later and are fully compatible with PHP 8.2 through 8.5.
Choose a host that lets you select and upgrade PHP deliberately rather than silently pinning every account to an old version. Test the complete stack—WordPress, the database, extensions, image libraries and plugins—on a staging site before changing a busy production site.

Extensions WordPress core requires
These are the fundamental modules identified by the WordPress Hosting Handbook. If one is absent, installation, updates or normal requests can fail outright.

A hosting control panel may display a driver such as mysqlnd while omitting mysqli. That combination is not enough: the application needs the database extension itself.

WordPress can sometimes substitute PHP code when a preferred extension is missing, but that may mean more work per request or the loss of a feature. The following modules prevent common failures in administration, media handling, integrations, updates and international text.

WordPress may still operate with a missing recommendation, but “it loads the homepage” is not a complete compatibility test. Check dashboard updates, media editing, imports, scheduled jobs and every integration your site actually uses.

Imagick, ImageMagick and the GD fallback
Why Imagick is preferred
imagick is the PHP extension that talks to ImageMagick. It generally offers better image quality, more capable resizing and editing operations, and PDF thumbnail support when Ghostscript is installed. The PHP extension alone is not sufficient: the host must also provide a compatible ImageMagick installation.
What happens without it
If Imagick is unavailable, WordPress can use the image/GD extension as a functionally limited fallback. GD is useful for basic raster operations, but it does not provide the full ImageMagick feature set. A site that creates thumbnails, processes large uploads, converts formats or previews PDFs should ask the host specifically about Imagick, ImageMagick and Ghostscript rather than accepting a generic “image support” claim.
System packages to verify
- ImageMagick 7.1 or newer is recommended for Imagick.
- Ghostscript 10.0 or newer is recommended for PDF thumbnails.
- WebP and AVIF support should be confirmed if those formats are part of your publishing workflow.
Security policy can restrict ImageMagick delegates or PDF handling. Ask whether the advertised formats are enabled in the production build, not merely installed on a different server.
Caching extensions: choose one object cache and enable OPcache
Object caching
APCu, Memcached and Redis are alternative object-cache integrations. They are not three modules that WordPress needs simultaneously: choose the one supported by your host and your cache plugin. Running multiple object-cache backends for the same purpose can create confusing configuration and invalidation problems.

OPcache
OPcache stores precompiled PHP bytecode so production requests do not repeatedly compile the same scripts. It should be enabled for production. OPcache is separate from an object cache: enabling one does not replace the other.
Other optional support
timezonedb is optional and relates to timezone functionality. igbinary can improve serialization for compatible cache setups, but it is not a replacement for the cache backend itself.
Fallback and situational modules
WordPress and plugins may use these when a preferred path is unavailable or when a particular feature requires them:
bcfor arbitrary-precision calculations.filterfor validating and sanitizing input.iconvfor character-set conversion.shmopfor shared-memory operations used by some software.simplexmlandxmlreaderfor alternate XML-reading APIs.sodiumfor modern cryptographic operations.zlibfor compression.
File-transfer support is also conditional. When direct file I/O is unavailable, WordPress’s transport priority is direct I/O, SSH2, the FTP extension, FTP over sockets, then pure-PHP FTP. SSH2, FTP and sockets therefore matter mainly on hosts that do not permit direct writes. They are not a reason to install every transfer module on every server.

Memory limits that match the workload
The Hosting Handbook gives these starting points from the WordPress Hosting Team in 2026:

Check both the host’s configured limit and WordPress’s reported value. A command-line PHP binary can use a different configuration from PHP-FPM or the web server, so a terminal check alone is not proof that dashboard requests have the same extensions or memory.
How to check modules before deploying
- Record the runtime: In the server’s PHP selector or control panel, note the exact PHP version and handler (PHP-FPM, Apache module or another handler). Target PHP 8.3 or newer; use PHP 8.4 when the host supports it and your plugins are compatible.
- List loaded extensions: Run
php -mfor the command-line binary, or create a temporary protected PHP information page withphpinfo()and remove it immediately after checking. Look forjson,hash,mysqli,curl,dom,exif,fileinfo,imagick,intl,mbstring,openssl,xmlandzip. - Confirm libraries: Ask which ImageMagick, Ghostscript, OpenSSL, WebP and AVIF libraries back the extensions. A module name in a panel does not prove that the required system library or codec is enabled.
- Check the database and transport: Verify MySQL 8.0 or newer or MariaDB 10.11 or newer, HTTPS, and a working outbound TLS connection. Test an update check and a remote API call in staging.
- Exercise real workflows: Install and update a plugin, upload and resize an image, create a PDF thumbnail if you need one, import XML or CSV data, save non-Latin text, and run scheduled tasks. These tests catch missing functionality that a module list cannot.
- Capture the result: Save the PHP version, loaded-module list, memory limit, cache backend and library versions with the deployment record so a future host migration can reproduce the environment.
Choosing a host or plan
Compare infrastructure capabilities rather than a marketing label. Ask these questions before signing up or migrating:
- Can you select PHP 8.3, 8.4 or 8.5, and what is the upgrade and rollback policy?
- Are the required and recommended extensions enabled for the PHP handler used by the website, not only for command-line PHP?
- Is Imagick paired with ImageMagick, and is Ghostscript available if PDF thumbnails are needed?
- Which one of APCu, Memcached or Redis is supported for object caching, and is OPcache enabled?
- What PHP memory limit is available, and can it be raised for WooCommerce, builders or imports?
- Are MySQL or MariaDB, HTTPS certificates and outbound TLS configured at the recommended baseline?
- Can support test the complete stack on staging before a PHP or extension change reaches production?
A host that cannot answer these questions clearly leaves you responsible for discovering compatibility problems after deployment.

Common failure symptoms and fixes
“There is no installation or update button”
Check zip, direct file permissions and the configured filesystem transport. If direct I/O is blocked, configure one supported SSH2 or FTP method and test it on staging.
“The site cannot contact an API or check updates”
Verify curl, openssl, DNS, outbound firewall rules and the server clock. A loaded extension cannot overcome a blocked egress connection or an invalid TLS chain.

Check fileinfo, exif, Imagick, ImageMagick delegates and Ghostscript. Confirm that WebP or AVIF codecs are enabled if those are the source or target formats.
“Accented or non-Latin text is corrupted”
Verify mbstring, intl, database character-set settings and the plugin’s own encoding assumptions. Do not solve a text-encoding problem by raising the memory limit.
“The dashboard reports an exhausted memory limit”
Start with the workload guidance above, then identify the plugin, import or image operation consuming memory. Raise the limit only after confirming the server has enough physical memory and that the PHP handler uses the new value.
Bottom line for a 2026 deployment
Build on PHP 8.3 or newer, preferably PHP 8.4 for production, with MySQL 8.0 or MariaDB 10.11, HTTPS, and at least the core extensions json, hash and mysqli. Treat curl, mbstring, openssl, xml, dom, fileinfo, intl and zip as the practical compatibility baseline. Add Imagick with a supported ImageMagick installation for serious media work, use GD only as a limited fallback, select one object-cache backend when needed, and enable OPcache. Finally, verify the actual PHP handler, libraries, memory and workflows on staging before changing production.
