How to Manage Nintendo Switch 2 Storage When Games Fill Up Your Console

Free space on Switch 2 safely: check Data Management, delete software without erasing saves, back up captures, and learn when microSD Express makes sense.

To free space on Nintendo Switch 2, open System Settings > Data Management, check what is using storage, then delete downloaded software you are not playing or move eligible software to a microSD Express card. Deleting software does not delete its save data. If you need a card, Switch 2 requires the microSD Express standard; an older Switch microSD card cannot store or load Switch 2 digital games.

Check what is taking up space

From the HOME Menu, open System Settings > Data Management. Use the storage information there to review available space and stored data before deleting anything. Nintendo lists the Switch 2’s internal storage as 256 GB, but a portion is reserved for system use. Nintendo does not state the remaining usable capacity on its Data Management FAQ.

Start by checking which games and other data are taking up room, then decide what you need to keep immediately accessible. The right choice depends on your habits: if you play a few games at a time and do not mind downloading them again later, removing software may be enough. If you prefer a larger installed library, a compatible microSD Express card is an option. There is no need to buy a card before checking what is actually stored on the console.

Start with the largest installed games you are not currently playing. If you are unsure what you can safely remove, distinguish downloaded software from save data and captures before confirming a deletion. A quick review helps avoid deleting a screenshot or video you meant to keep, or confusing a game’s installed files with the progress associated with your user.

Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.

Delete games without deleting your progress

In System Settings > Data Management, select downloaded software you no longer need installed and choose the deletion option shown on screen. Nintendo says deleted software can be downloaded again later. Its save data remains in the console’s System Memory, so removing a game is different from removing its save.

This is the simplest option if you are willing to download a game again when you want to play it. It frees the space used by the installed software without requiring you to buy a card. You will need an internet connection and enough time to download the software again when you return to it. If you have several games you have finished or do not expect to play soon, deleting their software can be a practical first step before changing anything else.

Deleting software is not the same as deleting a user account. Nintendo says deleting an account removes that user’s save data, and those saves cannot be restored. The distinction is important: deleting software leaves its save data on the console; deleting the associated user account does not. If your goal is simply to make room for another game, remove software through Data Management rather than deleting an account.

Before confirming, make sure you are selecting the software you intend to remove. If you later want to play it again, you can redownload the software, while its save remains in System Memory. The saved progress is not moved to a card along with the game files, and a microSD Express card is not a place to copy or preserve game saves.

Back up screenshots and videos before removing them

Captures are separate from installed games. If you need to clear capture space, first upload the screenshots and videos you want to keep to the Nintendo Switch App or transfer them to a computer. After confirming that the copies are available, delete the local captures from the console. This is a separate cleanup decision from removing a game: deleting software does not serve as a backup for captures you want to keep.

Choose the backup method that suits your workflow. The app gives you a way to upload captures, while a computer is another option for transferring files. In either case, check that the captures you care about are available in the destination before deleting the console copies. If you do not need to keep particular captures, you can remove those local files without buying game storage.

  • READY FOR TOMORROW. Ready for future products with a PCIe-NVMe interface; performs at UHS-I speeds with microSD UHS-I and UHS-II devices.
  • EXPONENTIALLY FASTER PERFORMANCE. Up to 4.4 times faster transfer speeds than our fastest microSD UHS-I cards [9]. Transfer a 2-hour HD movie in less than 3.5 seconds [1]; save up to 2.8 minutes transferring 60 minutes of 4K UHD video [4] shot at 30 fps when paired with the SanDisk PRO-READER SD Express Dual Card (sold separately) [9]
  • DURABILITY YOU CAN COUNT ON: Cards are waterproof, temperature-proof, humidity-proof, drop-proof, shock-proof, magnetic-proof, x-ray proof, and wear-out proof [5].
  • HEAT MANAGEMENT REIMAGINED. SanDisk ThermAdapt helps keep devices from overheating with a specially designed enclosure and controller that uses dynamic adaptive thermal management.

Nintendo says external USB hard drives are not currently supported for Switch 2 storage. A USB drive is therefore not a substitute for a compatible microSD Express card for storing game data. It may be a destination for captures transferred to a computer workflow, but do not treat it as an external game drive the console can use to store or load software.

Decide whether you need a microSD Express card

Expansion is optional. If you prefer to keep more games installed instead of deleting and redownloading them, Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards with capacities up to 2 TB, according to Nintendo’s microSD Express FAQ. Nintendo says the cards are sold separately.

Check the product specifications for the microSD Express standard before buying. A standard microSD card used with the original Nintendo Switch is not suitable for saving or loading digital game data on Switch 2. The older card may have worked for game storage on the first Switch, but that does not make it compatible for Switch 2 game data. Do not rely on a product description that only says “microSD”; confirm that it specifically identifies the Express standard.

Nintendo describes microSD Express as offering faster access than older microSD cards, but its support information does not provide comparative performance benchmarks. There is no supported basis here for ranking brands or promising a specific speed improvement in a particular game. The decision point is compatibility and capacity: choose a card that meets the Express requirement and fits how much software you want to keep installed.

Choose capacity based on your own library and habits: how many games you want installed at once, how often you capture video or screenshots, what you are comfortable spending, and whether you would rather redownload games when needed. Nintendo’s stated maximum is not a recommendation that every player needs a 2 TB card. A smaller capacity may suit someone who rotates games and deletes completed software; someone who wants a broader installed selection may value more room. Those are personal tradeoffs, not a Nintendo-prescribed capacity ranking.

A useful comparison is to decide whether the convenience of keeping more games installed is worth buying separate storage. Internal System Memory avoids an additional purchase but has less space available than the headline 256 GB because some is reserved for system use. Deleting and redownloading costs no card purchase but requires downloading software again when you want to play. Moving eligible software to an Express card can retain more installed data, but it does not move saves and does not permanently assign future data to the card.

Approach What it is useful for Important limit
Keep games in System Memory Keeping selected games installed without buying a card. Internal storage is 256 GB before system-reserved space; usable capacity is not stated by Nintendo.
Move eligible software to microSD Express Retaining more installed software when internal space is tight. Save data and some update data cannot be moved, and future installs are not permanently assigned to a location.
Delete software and redownload it later Freeing space without purchasing storage, if you are willing to download games again. Save data stays in System Memory, but the game software must be downloaded again to play.

Move eligible software between System Memory and a card

Switch 2 provides a way to move supported software data between internal storage and a microSD Express card. Nintendo’s move instructions caution that this is not a setting for choosing a permanent install location. Some data, including save data and certain update data, cannot be migrated.

  1. Insert a compatible microSD Express card if you are moving data to a card.
  2. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings > Data Management > Move System / microSD Express Card Data.
  3. Select the data you want to move and follow the on-screen prompts to confirm.
  4. Check the data’s new location in Data Management after the move completes.

Moving data does not lock a game to that destination. Nintendo notes that continued play can cause update data to be saved in a different location. If space is still tight afterward, check Data Management again rather than assuming every related file moved with the software. The move tool is for eligible data already on the system or card; it is not a promise that all parts of a title, including saves and every update, will travel together.

Think of moving data as a way to redistribute eligible installed content, not as a permanent storage rule. If you want to make room, first inspect the storage display, move the data Nintendo allows you to move, then review storage again. If that does not free enough room, deleting software you can redownload is another option. Saves remain in System Memory, so neither action should be mistaken for moving or erasing your progress.

Plan ahead if you replace or use more than one card

Nintendo recommends using one microSD Express card per console. Software stored across multiple cards cannot later be combined onto a single card. If you expect to expand, choosing one card with capacity suited to your library can avoid splitting stored software across cards. Before buying a second card, consider whether a single replacement with more capacity would better match Nintendo’s recommendation.

Replacing a card is more involved than freeing space through console settings. Nintendo documents copying card contents using a computer and a card slot or commercially available reader/writer. Its card transfer instructions warn that non-Windows environments may not copy the contents correctly. Keep the old card unchanged until you have verified that the replacement works and the expected data is present. Check that the computer and reader support the card and the transfer method before starting.

A microSD Express reader/writer may be useful for this replacement process if your computer does not have a suitable card slot. It is not needed to delete software, manage storage in the console settings, or move eligible data between system memory and a card. If using a separate reader, verify its interface and operating-system compatibility before relying on it for a transfer. Do not erase or repurpose the old card until the replacement has been checked.

Know what a game card does—and does not do

A physical game-key card is not necessarily a way to avoid downloading a full game. Nintendo explains that a game-key card is used to download the full game data rather than containing that full data itself. Nintendo’s Data Management FAQ also states that no individual game requires additional storage space to play. Those statements do not mean a game’s installed software takes no room: use Data Management to check the storage occupied by software on your console.

In other words, do not choose a game-key card on the assumption that it will always keep a large game off the console. The key card is used to download the full game data, so the installed software still matters when you are assessing available space. Check the console’s storage information and make decisions based on the software data stored there, rather than assuming a physical format eliminates storage needs.

Before you delete or buy anything

  • Check System Settings > Data Management to see what is using space.
  • Delete software you can download again; its save data remains in System Memory.
  • Back up captures you want to keep before deleting local copies.
  • If expanding, verify that the card is microSD Express, not an older standard microSD card.
  • Use the move-data menu for eligible software, but do not expect it to move saves or all update data.
  • Keep a card being replaced intact until the copied card is verified, and do not delete a user account to reclaim space.
  • Do not buy a card solely because the console is full until you have considered deleting software you can redownload.
  • If using more than one card now or planning a replacement, remember Nintendo recommends one card per console and does not support later combining software across cards.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I free up memory space on Nintendo Switch 2?

Open System Settings > Data Management from the HOME Menu and review what is stored. You can delete downloaded software you are not playing, back up and delete captures you do not need on the console, or move eligible software to a microSD Express card.

Will deleting a game delete my save data?

No. Nintendo says game save data is stored in the console’s System Memory, and deleting downloaded software does not delete its save. You can redownload the software later. Deleting the associated user account is different: Nintendo says that removes that user’s saves and they cannot be restored.

Can I use my old Nintendo Switch microSD card on Switch 2?

An older, non-Express microSD card cannot save or load digital game data on Switch 2. Switch 2 uses the microSD Express standard for expanded game storage. Check the card specifications for the Express designation before buying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I move games to a microSD Express card?

You can move eligible software data through System Settings > Data Management > Move System / microSD Express Card Data. Save data and some update data cannot be moved. The feature also does not permanently set where future data will be installed.

Do I need a microSD Express card?

No. You can manage space by deleting software you are not playing and redownloading it when you want it again. A card is an optional way to retain more installed software; Nintendo supports microSD Express cards up to 2 TB and sells them separately.

Can I use an external USB hard drive for Switch 2 games?

Nintendo says external USB hard drives are not currently supported for Switch 2 storage. They are not a substitute for a microSD Express card for storing or loading game data.

Can a game-key card save console storage?

Not necessarily. Nintendo explains that a game-key card is used to download the full game data rather than containing the full game itself. Check Data Management to see the software stored on your console.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use multiple microSD Express cards and combine them later?

Nintendo recommends one microSD Express card per console. Software stored across multiple cards cannot later be combined onto one card. If replacing a card, follow Nintendo’s computer-based transfer instructions, and keep the original intact until the new card is verified.

How much storage can I add to Switch 2?

Nintendo says Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards up to 2 TB. Its internal storage is listed as 256 GB, with some space reserved for system use; Nintendo does not state the usable capacity after that reservation.

The Bottom Line

Start with System Settings > Data Management. Deleting downloaded software is a safe way to free room when you are willing to download it again: your save stays in System Memory. Back up captures before clearing them. If you want more games installed at once, choose a compatible microSD Express card; older Switch microSD cards and external USB hard drives are not game-storage substitutes for Switch 2. Move only eligible software, and remember that saves and some update data cannot be moved.
