Research a rare game by treating its ownership history, physical authenticity, grading record, condition, and functionality as separate questions. Identify the exact copy, assemble and cross-check dated records, compare its physical features with the same release, corroborate historical claims, and verify any grading certification directly. No single seller story, visual clue, archive search, or grade establishes all of those things.
What provenance and authenticity mean
Provenance is the documented chain of custody: who owned or held the item, and what records support each transfer or period in its history. Authenticity concerns whether the object is what it is represented to be, including whether its packaging or seal is original where that is claimed. These questions overlap, but one does not answer the other. A plausible ownership history does not prove that a sealed package has not been resealed; a genuine game does not prove who owned it before the current seller.

Condition grading, a certification record, and playability are also distinct. A grade is an assessment within a grading service’s scope; it is not a complete ownership history or a promise that a cartridge or disc works. CGC’s published guarantee, accessed October 11, 2026, expressly excludes the function or “playability” of a video game cartridge or disc. It also sets limits for prototypes, playtests, and pedigree or variant attributions. Read the applicable guarantee rather than treating a grade as an all-purpose warranty.

Start by identifying the exact copy
Before searching for comparables or evaluating a seller’s claim, write down precisely what is being offered. A title may have multiple platforms, regional releases, editions, packaging formats, or claimed variants. A comparison against a superficially similar copy can mislead if those details differ.
- Record the title and platform.
- Record the claimed region, edition, publisher, and variant, if known.
- Describe the format as loose, complete-in-box, or sealed, and list the components said to be included.
- Note whether the claim concerns the game’s authenticity, original factory seal, ownership history, rarity, or a particular pedigree. Do not let one claim stand in for another.
- Photograph all sides, labels, seams, inserts, and visible damage before handling or opening the item. Keep the original files and note when and how you received them.
These are practical documentation steps, not a universal grading checklist. The point is to preserve a record of what you actually examined. If the item is sealed, do not open it merely to resolve uncertainty without first considering how opening could affect its collectible value and any seller or auction remedies. If it is already open, document that state and do not describe it as factory sealed based solely on the appearance of packaging materials.
Build a dated chain of custody
Ask for records that connect the current seller to earlier owners or custodians. Useful evidence can include dated receipts, prior sale listings, correspondence, photographs, estate or collection records, and transfer documentation. The strongest trail is not necessarily the one with the most pages; it is the one whose records identify the same item consistently and whose dates and transfers can be checked against one another.
Gather records tied to the object
For each document or image, note its date, source, what it actually establishes, and how specifically it identifies the game. A receipt may show that a transaction occurred but not necessarily prove that the pictured copy is the copy now offered. A photograph may show the item in a collection but leave the owner, date, or identity of the copy uncertain. Preserve those distinctions in your notes.
Cross-check rather than concatenate
Compare names, dates, descriptions, packaging details, and any distinctive marks across independent records. If a listing calls the item one edition while a receipt or photograph indicates another, record the conflict and ask for an explanation supported by evidence. If the records begin only with the current seller, say so; do not fill an undocumented period with a confident story.

A useful working record can be a simple chronology with columns for date, holder or event, supporting evidence, and unresolved questions. Mark whether an entry is documented, inferred, or merely asserted. That makes gaps visible and helps prevent a seller’s explanation from quietly becoming “provenance.”
Do not confuse a pedigree with a complete history
A grading label or pedigree attribution may identify a collection or claimed association, but it should not substitute for the item’s documented chain of custody. CGC’s guarantee states that pedigrees are not guaranteed. Treat any pedigree or special-collection claim as a separate attribution to verify, and read the guarantee’s stated limits before relying on it.

For a physical authenticity assessment, compare the item with known examples matching its platform, region, edition, publisher, and packaging type as closely as possible. “Same title” alone is not a sufficiently controlled comparison. Construction can vary by console and publisher, and an authentic-looking seal or component is not necessarily evidence that the particular copy is factory sealed.
Compare components, not just the overall appearance
Examine the construction and placement of seals, box printing, labels, and included components. Look for whether the details you can see are consistent with the matching release, and document both agreements and discrepancies. Use photographs of known copies where possible, and note the source and exact version of each comparison. CGC’s guidance on reseals recommends comparing with known copies, notes that seal types vary by console and publisher, and warns that third-party seals are common on resealed games.
A mismatch is a reason to investigate, not a verdict by itself. A difference may reflect another release or packaging variation; an apparent match may also be insufficient to prove originality. Visual assessment is most useful when it narrows the questions to ask and identifies evidence that should be reviewed by someone qualified, rather than when it is used to make an unsupported certainty claim.

Consider the possibility of resealing
Packaging materials can be genuine-looking even when a game has been resealed. A neat seal, an undamaged-looking box, or a seller’s statement that an item is “new” does not independently establish factory sealing. Conversely, a visible irregularity needs context: the relevant construction depends on the particular release, and the available general guidance does not supply game-specific seal diagrams or universal pass/fail criteria.

CGC says it rejects submissions showing evidence that a used game was handled and then resealed. That is a statement about its submission policy, not a rule that a buyer can apply as a visual test to every game. Do not infer from a single seam or wrap feature that a copy is genuine or fake without a release-matched basis.
Corroborate release and ownership claims historically
Contemporary magazines, catalogs, press kits, promotional materials, and archival records can help establish release context or support an ownership-related claim. They may confirm that a release, promotion, or event existed, or provide material against which a seller’s account can be compared. Historical context is corroboration; it does not by itself authenticate the specific physical copy in front of you.
The Video Game History Foundation describes a public library and digital archive with relevant kinds of holdings. Its library help and digital archive help explain their collections, and its January 30, 2025 announcement said the library opened in early access. The Foundation also states that its catalog and digital archive are incomplete. Therefore, an unsuccessful search is not proof that an item, release, advertisement, or ownership event never existed.
When you find a useful record, preserve enough information to identify it again: the publication or archive, date, title or issue, and the specific description or image relevant to your question. Compare the source’s actual wording with the claim being made. For example, evidence that a product was advertised is not necessarily evidence that a particular edition was commercially released in the form claimed, and neither fact identifies a particular copy’s chain of custody.

Verify a grading holder and understand the result
If the game is in a grading holder, use the issuing service’s official certification lookup or scan the holder’s QR code. CGC’s video game certification lookup returns the description and grade associated with a certification number and says the tool can help check whether its holder is genuine and untampered. Compare the returned record with the physical item rather than stopping at a successful search.
- Read the certification number from the holder carefully, or scan its QR code.
- Open the issuing service’s official lookup and enter the number.
- Compare the lookup’s description and grade with the title, platform, region, edition, and item visible in the holder.
- Inspect the holder for signs of alteration and check that the label and object appear consistent with the lookup record.
- Save a dated record of the lookup and any discrepancies, then contact the issuer if the record and holder do not match.
A matching lookup is evidence that a corresponding certification record exists; it is not a substitute for reading the service’s guarantee or for examining the holder and item. The guarantee’s scope matters, including its exclusions for playability and limitations on certain prototype, playtest, pedigree, and variant claims.
Read rejection labels precisely
CGC publishes rejection outcomes including counterfeit, reseal, ineligible type, and questionable authenticity. These are materially different categories. A rejection label should be read as the stated result, not paraphrased as a universal finding about every aspect of the item. In particular, “questionable authenticity” is not the same wording as a definitive counterfeit determination, and “ineligible type” is not itself a claim that an object is counterfeit.

The CGC rejection-label explanation was published December 28, 2022. The category names are useful when interpreting a CGC result, but do not establish that another service uses the same terminology or standards.
Assess what each evidence source can and cannot prove
A defensible conclusion comes from combining independent kinds of evidence while keeping their limits visible. A document can support a transaction date; a photograph can support a claim about an item’s appearance at a certain time; a physical comparison can identify features worth investigating; and a certification lookup can confirm a grading record. None automatically fills every gap.

When the evidence conflicts, retain the conflict in your conclusion. A careful statement such as “the available records document ownership from this date, while earlier custody is unverified” is more defensible than converting an incomplete trail into an unbroken provenance claim.
Check protections and deadlines before buying
Before relying on a seller’s return policy, grading guarantee, or auction process, read the terms that apply to that specific transaction. Identify what claim can be challenged, who must receive it, what form it must take, and the deadline. Save a copy of the terms in force when you buy, along with the listing and correspondence.
Deadlines can be short and differ by sale. Heritage Auctions’ terms and conditions, accessed October 11, 2026, state that authenticity or provenance challenges must be submitted in writing within 30 days after the auction. That is an example of one auction’s stated terms, not a general deadline for collectible games. Check the actual auction terms and calculate any applicable deadline from the event they specify.

- Use the required written process and submit within the relevant deadline if you intend to challenge a claim.
- Do not assume that an issuer’s guarantee covers seller representations, functionality, or attributions that its terms exclude.
Make a conclusion that matches the evidence
At the end of the investigation, state separately what you can support about identity, custody, physical authenticity, seal status, grade or certification, and function. Use confidence language tied to evidence, not to the price, rarity, holder, or confidence of the seller. If one part is unresolved, name it rather than letting stronger evidence in another area conceal the gap.
A practical final record should include the exact object description; a dated custody timeline; a list of source records and what each supports; relevant physical comparisons; archive searches and their scope; any certification lookup and guarantee limits; and unresolved discrepancies. This creates a useful basis for a purchase decision or later review without claiming more certainty than the records justify.
