Build an RPG party around the demands of the fight, not a supposedly perfect lineup. First identify what the encounter asks you to do—survive incoming damage, defeat threats, control enemies, or keep allies effective—then assign those jobs to characters whose skills, stats, and equipment support them. Roles can overlap, and the right balance depends on the game and encounter.
Which roles should my party cover?
Think of roles as contributions to combat rather than mandatory class slots. A broad checklist includes durability, damage, support or control, and healing or protection. One character may cover more than one function; the goal is to ensure the party can handle the fight’s demands, not to fill a fixed template.
- Durability: Take, redirect, prevent, or withstand incoming damage.
- Damage: Defeat enemies efficiently, including threats that should be removed early.
- Support and control: Improve allies or hinder enemies with buffs, debuffs, protection, or other effects the game provides.
- Healing and recovery: Restore allies or otherwise help the party recover from damage and status effects.
Some games formalize roles differently. In FINAL FANTASY XIV’s party manual, tanks divert enemy focus and bear attacks, healers restore and protect allies, and DPS focus on offensive attacks. Required party size and role restrictions vary by duty, so those labels and requirements describe FFXIV—not every RPG.
How do I build characters around their roles?
A role is the job a character performs in a fight; a build is the set of choices that enables that job. Use the game’s own skill, stat, equipment, and threshold systems rather than importing a generic priority list. For example, the FFXIV Job Guide distinguishes among DPS approaches: physical ranged jobs provide support as well as damage, magical ranged jobs trade movement freedom while casting for burst potential, and melee jobs rely on close-range positioning and combos. The guide is marked updated for 7.5; these are FFXIV-specific distinctions, not rules for RPGs as a whole.

- Choose the job for this party and encounter. Decide what you want the character to contribute: damage, durability, recovery, control, or a combination.
- Find the choices that enable it. Check which skills, stats, equipment effects, and thresholds matter in that game. Do not assume the same stats or gearing priorities transfer between titles.
- Check the rest of the party. A strong individual setup may add little if it duplicates a function the group already handles while leaving a crucial gap.
- Account for how combat works. Consider turn order, positioning, target priority, enemy defenses or affinities, and party-wide buffs where those mechanics exist.
- Test changes deliberately. If a setup underperforms, change one skill or equipment choice at a time and compare it in a repeatable fight. This makes it easier to tell which adjustment helped.
For a game-specific example of the approach, Plarium’s RPG strategy guide discusses build, gear, synergy, turn order, counters, and iterative improvement, including examples from RAID: Shadow Legends. Its particular stat advice belongs to that game and should not be treated as universal RPG guidance.
How should I compare two viable characters or builds?
Compare what each option does for the whole party under the encounter’s conditions, not just its isolated damage or survivability. These questions help surface the trade-offs:

- Role coverage: Does the option fill a missing function, or repeat one the party already has?
- Encounter fit: Can it answer the enemies’ damage, control, status, defense, or affinity mechanics?
- Synergy: Do its buffs, debuffs, protection, or combo effects make another party member more effective?
- Timing and position: Can it act at the useful moment and reach or affect the right targets?
- Survivability versus output: What damage, protection, healing, or utility does the setup gain or give up?
- Flexibility and cost: Can it adapt to other duties, and does the game impose a resource or respec cost for changing it?
How do I adjust my party for a difficult fight?
Start with the obstacle that is actually causing failure. If a key ally falls before contributing, examine protection, healing, positioning, and whether a dangerous enemy can be controlled or defeated sooner. If enemies survive long enough to overwhelm the group, look at target priority, damage concentration, and whether buffs or debuffs can improve the party’s effective output. If a mechanic resists your usual approach, check the game’s documented defenses, affinities, status rules, and role restrictions.
Coordination can matter as much as a character’s standalone strength. In a turn-based game, acting before an enemy may let a debuff or shield affect the right moment; focusing attacks may remove an enemy’s future actions. These are tactical possibilities, not guarantees: turn order, effect duration, enemy behavior, and action rules differ by game.

- Identify the specific failure point—such as an ally being knocked out, a threat surviving too long, or a mechanic going unanswered.
- Map that problem to the party function or encounter response that is missing.
- Change the relevant character, skill, equipment choice, target order, or positioning rather than rebuilding everything at once.
- Retry under comparable conditions and note whether the specific problem improved.
- If it did not, revise the diagnosis before making another focused change.
This method avoids treating a difficult fight as proof that the party needs a universally prescribed composition. The useful adjustment is the one that answers the encounter’s actual demands within that game’s rules.
