If you need room, delete games or apps, remove eligible unused game content, or move games you are not playing. For games you want to launch directly from added storage, a compatible internal M.2 SSD is the relevant expansion; USB extended storage can archive PS5 games, but they must be copied back before you play them. PlayStation Plus cloud storage holds saved data, not game installations.
Check the game’s space needs and your PS5’s available storage
On the console, open Settings > Storage. The storage screen shows how much space is used by games, media, and saved data, so you can see whether the console has enough room before starting a download. Check the current PlayStation Store entry for the particular game as well: required space and update needs can vary, and there is no single free-space figure that applies to every title.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Use the figure shown on your own console rather than relying on a remembered number from another game or an old listing. A game can receive updates or offer optional content after its original release, so the current Store page is the appropriate place to check that title’s download information. Leave yourself practical headroom instead of treating the displayed requirement as a guarantee that every later update will fit.

A quick pre-download checklist
- Confirm the game’s current Store listing and note whether it is a PS5 version, a PS4 version, or both.
- Open Settings > Storage and record the available console space.
- Look through Games and Apps for an installation you can delete, trim, or move without disrupting what you plan to play next.
- Decide whether you need the game playable immediately. That determines whether USB extended storage is suitable or whether an M.2 SSD is the better long-term answer.
- Protect anything on a USB drive before formatting it, and do not assume PlayStation Plus cloud storage contains the game itself.
This short check prevents two common mistakes: beginning a large download without enough local room, and buying or formatting storage that does not match the way you intend to use it.
Free space on the console without buying storage
Delete a game or app you can restore later
- Open Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps.
- Select the games or apps you no longer need installed, then choose Delete.
- Return to the game library to download a deleted purchase again when you want it. Redownloading requires a network connection and time, so this is most useful for something you do not need to play immediately.
Deleting an installation is a way to reclaim local space, not a way to make that game playable from an archive. If you want the game back on the console, you will need to download it again or restore it from suitable storage.
For a no-cost first step, sort your choices by how inconvenient they are to restore. A game you have finished or rarely launch is usually a better deletion candidate than one you expect to play tonight. Remember that deleting the game application is different from deleting saved data; keep your saved data unless you have separately decided that the progress is no longer needed.
Remove only eligible parts of a game
Some games offer a Customize option in the console’s game and app storage controls. When it appears, you may be able to remove particular add-ons or parts you have finished while keeping the remaining game content installed and playable. The option depends on the game and its content; do not expect it to appear for every title.
Check the labels carefully before confirming. Optional language packs, campaign sections, or add-ons may be listed separately, but the available choices are determined by the game. Selective deletion can be a useful middle ground when you want to preserve the main installation and avoid downloading everything again.
Choose where to keep games you are not playing
| Storage choice | Useful for | Can a PS5 game launch directly from it? | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delete games or apps | Freeing space without buying hardware | No | Restore the game by downloading it again when needed. |
| Selective game-content deletion | Removing eligible add-ons or finished parts | The remaining content may stay playable | Only available for some games and content. |
| USB extended storage | Archiving PS5 game data or playing PS4 games | No for PS5 games; yes for PS4 games | Copy PS5 game data back to console storage or an M.2 SSD before playing. |
| Internal M.2 SSD | Adding storage for games you want to download and launch on PS5 | Yes, if the SSD is compatible | Requires a correctly sized, compatible drive and effective heat dissipation. |
| PlayStation Plus cloud storage | Keeping or syncing saved data | Not for game installations | Stores saves, not the installed game files. |
The table’s distinction is the central decision: USB storage is primarily an archive for PS5 games, while an M.2 SSD is an expansion of the playable storage pool. Deleting is free but costs a future download. Cloud storage addresses progress, not capacity for applications.

Use USB extended storage as an archive
Sony’s guidance is explicit: “PlayStation®5 games can’t be played directly from USB extended storage, so make sure to copy PS5® game data back to your console storage or M.2 SSD storage when you want to play the game again.” PS4 games can be played directly from USB extended storage, which makes it a more immediate play location for PS4 titles than it is for PS5 titles.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Sony’s USB requirements, in support guidance reviewed on October 13, 2026, are SuperSpeed USB at 5 Gbps or later, a capacity of at least 250 GB and no more than 8 TB. Sony cautions that it does not guarantee every device will work, even when it appears to meet the requirements. The drive must be connected directly to the PS5, not through a USB hub.
- Formatting a drive as extended storage erases its existing contents. Back up anything important before formatting.
- After use, safely remove the drive through the PS5 settings rather than simply unplugging it.
- Allow for the extra copy-back step when deciding whether USB suits a game you expect to play soon.
A sensible USB workflow is to move a PS5 game you are keeping but not currently playing, then copy it back when you are ready. The move preserves the installation without requiring a fresh download, but it does not make the game launchable while it remains on USB. If the drive is disconnected, the PS5 cannot use the archived installation until it is connected again.
USB extended storage is also useful when several PS4 games are competing for internal space, because PS4 games can run directly from the connected drive. It is not a substitute for an M.2 SSD when your priority is launching PS5 games without a transfer step.
Add an M.2 SSD for games playable from the expanded storage
A compatible M.2 SSD is the option for downloading, storing, and launching PS5 games from added storage. The product description alone is not enough to confirm compatibility: check the exact drive interface, dimensions, and cooling structure against Sony’s current specifications before buying or installing it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Requirement in Sony’s M.2 guidance | Specification |
|---|---|
| Drive type and interface | PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe, with an M Key |
| Capacity | 250 GB to 8 TB |
| Supported form factors | 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, or 22110 |
| Maximum width | 25 mm |
| Supported lengths | 30, 42, 60, 80, or 110 mm |
| Maximum thickness | 11.25 mm, including the cooling structure |
| Sequential read speed | Sony recommends 5,500 MB/s or faster |
| Cooling | A cooling structure, such as a heatsink and heat-transfer sheet, is required. |
M.2 SATA drives are unsupported. Sony also cautions that compatibility and performance are not guaranteed for every drive that meets the listed criteria; some games may not perform identically to when they run from the console’s internal SSD, even if the M.2 drive exceeds the recommended read speed. Treat “PS5-compatible M.2 NVMe SSD with heatsink” as a starting search phrase, then verify the specific model’s measurements and cooling arrangement against Sony’s current requirements. Do not assume every M.2 SSD fits.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Pay particular attention to the thickness measurement: Sony’s maximum includes the cooling structure, not just the bare circuit board. A drive that fits by length but exceeds the width or combined thickness limit is not an acceptable choice. The interface must also be PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe with an M Key; an M.2 label by itself does not establish compatibility.
Installation is a hardware task, so follow the current console and drive instructions carefully. After the drive is recognized and formatted by the PS5, it can serve as a destination for PS5 game downloads and as a place to launch compatible games. Keep the manufacturer’s exact specifications and Sony’s current support page available when checking a listing. No particular retail model, price, or stock status is universal, so compare those details at the time you buy.
Consider the cost and the inconvenience, not just capacity
The cheapest option is usually to delete something and download it again later, but that trades money for bandwidth and waiting time. A USB drive adds a hardware cost while letting you retain PS5 installations as archives; the copy-back step remains part of the experience. An M.2 SSD costs more than doing nothing, but it is the relevant purchase when you routinely want several PS5 games ready to launch. Prices and availability vary by retailer and date, so use the compatibility rules rather than an old price claim to compare products.
If space pressure happens only occasionally, deletion or USB archiving may be sufficient. If every large download forces the same cleanup, an M.2 expansion can reduce that repeated friction. In either case, buy only a drive whose complete interface, capacity, dimensions, read-speed guidance, and cooling arrangement are documented.
Keep saved data separate from game installations
PlayStation Plus cloud storage is for saved data. It can help preserve or sync progress, but it does not move installed game files off the PS5 or create room for a large download. Sony’s support guidance reviewed on October 13, 2026, gives members up to 100 GB for PS5 saved data and 100 GB for PS4 saved data, with a limit of 1,000 PS4 save files.
Cloud synchronization requires the relevant internet connection and auto-sync settings for Rest Mode. These settings affect saved-data syncing; they do not turn cloud storage into an installation location for games.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
This distinction matters when troubleshooting a full drive. Removing a save file may recover some space, but it does not relocate the much larger game installation and can remove progress you still need. Use cloud storage to protect progress, and use console, USB, or M.2 storage to manage applications.
Start or manage a download remotely with the PlayStation App
The PlayStation App can start a download remotely when it is paired with the console. For remote downloads, Sony documents that the PS5 must be in Rest Mode with Stay Connected to the Internet enabled. The app can show games on console storage and USB extended storage and can delete selected games. In some configurations, it can download to an M.2 SSD set as the default install location.
The app does not support moving or copying games between storage locations. Use the console when you need to transfer existing PS5 game data between USB extended storage and console or M.2 storage; use the app for remote downloading or deletion, not as a transfer tool.
That makes the app a convenience feature rather than a storage-management replacement. You can clear a selected installation or begin an eligible download while away from the console, but you still need to perform transfers on the PS5. If the console is not configured for Rest Mode internet access, a remote command will not provide the expected result.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Avoid common storage mistakes
- Do not treat a USB archive as playable PS5 storage. Copy the game back before launching it.
- Do not format a USB drive casually. Formatting as extended storage erases its existing data.
- Do not connect the extended-storage drive through a hub. Sony’s guidance calls for a direct connection.
- Do not buy an M.2 drive from the capacity label alone. Interface, M Key, dimensions, read speed, and cooling all matter.
- Do not assume Customize exists everywhere. Selective deletion is game-dependent.
- Do not confuse cloud saves with cloud game storage. Plus cloud storage does not hold installed game files.
- Do not rely on a universal install-size number. Check the current Store entry for the exact game and version.
- Do not unplug USB storage without safely removing it. Use the PS5’s storage controls first.
Pick the simplest option for what you want to play next
- If you need space now and do not need a particular installed game, delete it and redownload it later.
- If a game offers Customize, check whether removing content you no longer need is enough.
- If you want to keep PS5 games without having them ready to launch, use compatible USB extended storage and plan to copy the game back before playing.
- If you repeatedly run short on space and want games to remain directly playable, check a compatible M.2 SSD against Sony’s full current requirements.
- If your concern is preserving progress, use saved-data storage; it will not free installation space.
For any large PlayStation Plus download, make the decision from the console’s current free-space figure and that game’s current Store listing. That avoids relying on a guessed universal install size or on catalog availability that may differ by region, tier, or date.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I free up space on my PS5 before a PlayStation Plus download?

Can I play PS5 games directly from an external hard drive?
No. PS5 games stored on USB extended storage must be copied back to console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD before they can be played. PS4 games can run directly from USB extended storage.
What USB drive works as PS5 extended storage?
Sony specifies SuperSpeed USB at 5 Gbps or later, 250 GB minimum capacity, and 8 TB maximum capacity. Connect the drive directly rather than through a USB hub, and remember that compatibility is not guaranteed for every device.
What should I check before buying an M.2 SSD for PS5?
Verify PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe with an M Key, 250 GB–8 TB capacity, a supported form factor, maximum width of 25 mm, maximum thickness of 11.25 mm including the cooler, and a cooling structure. Sony recommends at least 5,500 MB/s sequential read speed.

No. Cloud storage preserves and synchronizes saved data. It does not store installed game files or create room for a game download. Sony lists up to 100 GB each for PS5 and PS4 saved data, with a 1,000-file limit for PS4 saves.
Can the PlayStation App move games between drives?
No. The app can start downloads, show games on console or USB storage, and delete selected games, but moving or copying games requires the PS5 console.
Will deleting a purchased game remove my ownership?
Deleting the installation frees local space. A deleted purchase remains available for redownload from the game library, although downloading it again requires network access and time.
Why does my PS5 still need space if I have cloud saves?
Cloud saves contain progress files, not the game application. The installation still needs space on console storage, USB storage for archiving, or a compatible M.2 SSD for direct play.

The Bottom Line
Check Settings > Storage and the game’s current Store listing first. Delete or selectively trim what you can, archive PS5 games on correctly configured USB storage only if you accept the copy-back step, and choose a fully compatible M.2 SSD when you need PS5 games to remain directly playable. Keep cloud storage for saves, not installations.
