The least disruptive fix is usually to remove an unused game or app, or use a game’s Customize option to delete an add-on or completed content. If you want to keep the installation, archive it on USB extended storage or add a compatible M.2 SSD. Deleting an installed game does not remove your purchase access, but a PS5 game stored on USB must be copied back before you can play it.
Check the PS5’s actual free space first
Do not estimate from the advertised capacity of the console or from the size shown on a game’s store page. The relevant number is the available capacity reported by your console immediately before installation.

- Open Settings from the PS5 home screen.
- Select Storage.
- Review the free space shown for Console Storage.
The storage screen separates installed games and apps from saved data, media and other system categories. This distinction matters: deleting an installed game is not the same as deleting its save. Sony’s current storage guidance is available at How to manage PS5 console storage space.

Sony’s published guidance does not set one general amount of spare space that every PS5 game requires, and it does not promise that a particular cleanup will recover a fixed number of gigabytes. Use the game’s installation prompt and the free-space figure shown by your own console. If the installation still does not begin after you remove or move data, return to Settings > Storage and check the number again rather than relying on an earlier estimate.

Choose the least disruptive way to make room
Your choice depends on whether you need the data immediately playable, whether you are willing to erase and redownload it, and whether you want to buy storage hardware.
| Option | What happens to the data | Can PS5 games run there? | Cost or requirement | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Delete a game or app | The installed files are removed. Your purchase access remains, and the item can be downloaded again from your library. | Not until you reinstall it. | No hardware purchase; downloading again uses time and an internet connection. | Fastest way to reclaim internal space when you are finished with a title for now. |
| Use Customize | Where supported, selected add-ons or portions of a game are removed while the remaining installation stays. | Usually yes for the content you retain, subject to that game’s design. | No hardware purchase; the option is not available for every game. | Removing completed campaigns, language packs or other optional content when the game exposes those controls. |
| Move to USB extended storage | The game files remain on a USB drive formatted as PS5 extended storage. | PS4 games can run directly. PS5 games must be copied to console storage or an M.2 SSD before play. | A compatible commercially available USB drive; formatting erases the drive. | Archiving games you want to keep without occupying internal space. |
| Install a compatible M.2 SSD | Games are stored on internal expansion storage rather than the built-in console drive. | Yes, for compatible PS5 and PS4 games. | An M.2 SSD that meets Sony’s current requirements and physical installation of the drive. | A larger library that remains playable from expanded storage. |
Delete an unused game or application
Use the official deletion path
- Go to Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps.
- Review the installed items and select a game or application you no longer need on the console.
- Choose Delete and confirm.
- Return to Settings > Storage and verify the new free-space figure.
Sony states that deleting an installed purchase does not forfeit access: “Don’t worry, you won’t lose access to any deleted games or applications — you can re-download your purchases from your game library whenever you like.” The statement appears in Sony’s storage-management guide. You may need to wait for a future download or disc installation before playing that title again, so remove games you can reasonably archive or reinstall later.
Check for a selective-removal control before deleting the whole game
Some games show a Customize option beside the installation. Open it before choosing full deletion. Depending on the title, the menu can expose optional add-ons or portions you have finished, allowing you to keep the main installation while removing content you do not currently need. The exact choices are game-specific; if Customize is absent, the game does not offer that control through the PS5 storage screen.

Do not assume that removing an add-on removes your saved progress. Save behavior is controlled by the individual game, so consult its in-game or publisher guidance if you are unsure about a particular downloadable component.
Archive games on USB extended storage
What USB extended storage is for
USB extended storage is an archive for installed game data. It is different from an ordinary flash drive used for screenshots or file transfer: the PS5 must format the drive as extended storage before it can move games there. Sony’s USB extended storage guide lists the current connection requirements and the supported setup.

Format and move games
- Connect a compatible USB drive to the PS5 and follow the console’s prompt to format it as extended storage. Formatting erases the drive’s existing contents, so copy anything important elsewhere first.
- After formatting, open Game Library.
- Select the game, press the options button, and choose Move Games and Apps (the wording can vary with system software).
- Select the titles to move and confirm. Check Settings > Storage when the transfer completes.
Do not disconnect the drive while it is being formatted or while the PS5 is using it. Use the console’s safe-removal command before unplugging it. Sony’s support page linked above explains the connection and safe-disconnection steps that apply to the current system software.
Understand the PS5 playback limitation
A PS5 game can be stored on USB extended storage, but it cannot be played directly from there. Sony’s wording is explicit: “To play PS5 games, you need to move game data from your USB extended storage drive back to your PS5 console storage or M.2 SSD storage.” Copy the game back when you want to launch it; the transfer time depends on the amount of data and the drive.
PS4 games are different: Sony allows them to be played directly from USB extended storage. If your immediate goal is to keep a PS4 library available without consuming console space, USB can provide both storage and direct playback. For PS5 games, treat USB as an archive rather than a second active install location.
USB pitfalls to avoid
- Do not confuse a general-purpose flash drive with extended storage. The drive must be formatted through the PS5’s extended-storage process before games can be moved to it.
- Do not unplug during a transfer or while the drive is active. Interrupting a transfer can leave data unavailable until the console repairs or the game is moved again.
- Do not expect USB to preserve PS5 saved data as a normal backup. Save handling is covered separately below.
Add a compatible M.2 SSD when you want games playable from expanded storage
What an M.2 SSD changes
An eligible M.2 SSD gives the PS5 another high-speed storage location for games. Sony describes M.2 storage as usable for downloading, copying and launching PS5 and PS4 games in its PS5 Support information. Unlike USB extended storage, it is intended for games you want to run from the expanded location without copying them back to the built-in drive.
Verify compatibility before buying
Do not choose a drive solely because it is labeled “NVMe” or because its capacity fits your budget. Sony’s requirements cover the drive’s physical format, interface, performance, cooling and dimensions, and those requirements can change. Check the current instructions in How to add an M.2 SSD to a PS5 console immediately before purchase. Verify the exact model, including any heatsink, against Sony’s dimensions and other requirements.

Install it and choose an installation location
Follow Sony’s console-specific installation procedure, then let the PS5 format the new drive when prompted. After setup, the storage settings allow you to select where new games are installed. You can download or move compatible titles to the M.2 SSD and launch them from there. Keep the original drive packaging and model information until the console has recognized and formatted the SSD successfully.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAn M.2 SSD is an optional expansion, not a prerequisite for clearing space today. Delete or archive an unused game first if you only need room for one installation. Choose the SSD when recurring capacity limits and the need to keep several PS5 games immediately playable justify the additional hardware.
Protect saved data and media while clearing installations
Installed game files are not saves
A game’s installed files occupy the space shown under games and apps. Saved data records your progress separately. Removing the game from Games and Apps is not the same operation as deleting its save, and you should not select saved-data controls merely to solve an installation-space problem.
PS5 saves and PlayStation Plus cloud storage
Sony’s storage guidance points PlayStation Plus members to cloud storage for PS5 saved data. A USB drive should not be treated as a general way to copy PS5 saves: Sony’s guide does not provide USB copying for PS5 saved data in the same way it does for PS4 saves. If a particular save is important, confirm that it has synchronized with the cloud before deleting an installation or changing storage.
PS4 saves, screenshots and clips
Sony describes copying PS4 saved data to a USB drive. Screenshots and video clips can also be copied to USB. These media files can be large, so moving them off the console may help when the media category is the source of the shortage, but it does not replace the game-management steps above.

- Use the saved-data menu only when you intentionally want to manage saves.
- Copy screenshots and clips to a USB drive before deleting them if you want to keep them.
Install the large game after cleanup
Recheck capacity instead of guessing
- Finish the deletion, selective removal or transfer.
- Open Settings > Storage again and note the current free space.
- Start the game download or disc installation.
- If the PS5 reports insufficient space, stop and repeat the storage review; remove or move another item rather than deleting saved data by mistake.
There is no official universal reserve figure that guarantees every installation will succeed. The console’s current report and the installation prompt are the authoritative checks for your specific game and system state.
When a deleted game still appears in your library
This is expected. The library represents your ownership or access, not necessarily an installed copy. A deleted purchase can remain listed and can be downloaded again. The presence of the game in the library does not mean its files still occupy console storage.

“I need space, but I do not want to redownload the game.”
Move the installation to USB extended storage if you are comfortable copying a PS5 game back before play, or use a compatible M.2 SSD if you want to launch it from expanded storage. If the game offers Customize, remove only optional content first.
“The game is on USB, but the PS5 will not start it.”
Confirm whether it is a PS5 or PS4 version. Copy a PS5 game from USB extended storage to console storage or an M.2 SSD before launching it. A PS4 game can run from USB when the drive is correctly connected and recognized.
Recommended Free Tools
“The external drive is not available.”
Do not format it again until you have checked its contents and connection. Formatting erases data. Reconnect it using the port and cable recommended in Sony’s current USB extended-storage instructions, then use the PS5’s storage screen to confirm whether it is recognized. If the drive was unplugged without safe removal, reconnect it and allow the console to complete any checking process before moving games.

“I am short on space even after deleting a game.”
Return to Settings > Storage and inspect each category. Large captures, clips, applications or multiple copies of games may account for the remaining use. The amount recovered varies with the item you removed; Sony does not publish a guaranteed recovery figure for a typical cleanup.
“I am worried that deleting the game deletes my progress.”
Do not delete saved data as part of a routine game uninstall. Check the save-storage controls separately and confirm cloud synchronization for supported PlayStation Plus saves. PS4 saves and media can be copied to USB according to Sony’s guidance; PS5 saves should not be assumed to be USB-copyable.
Use this decision guide before buying hardware
| Your situation | Recommended first action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You need room for one new game and can reinstall an older title later. | Delete the older game or app after checking Customize. | It is the fastest no-cost change and does not remove purchase access. |
| You want to keep several PS5 games but play only one or two at a time. | Archive the others on USB extended storage. | The files stay available, but remember that PS5 titles must be copied back before play. |
| You have a large PS4 collection and want direct play from expanded storage. | Use USB extended storage that meets Sony’s requirements. | PS4 games can run directly from that location. |
| You regularly hit the internal limit and want PS5 games playable without shuffling them. | Install a model-verified, compatible M.2 SSD. | PS5 and PS4 games can be stored and launched from eligible M.2 storage. |
| Your shortage is mainly screenshots or clips. | Copy media to USB, then remove local copies. | This addresses the media category without touching game saves or installations. |
Keep the library manageable over time
Separate active games from archives
Keep frequently played PS5 titles on console or M.2 storage, and treat USB extended storage as a holding area for games you want to retain but do not need to launch immediately. That simple separation reduces the chance of deleting a game you cannot quickly reinstall while avoiding a full internal drive.
Review optional content periodically
After finishing a campaign or a large expansion, revisit Games and Apps and look for Customize. A game may expose removable components that were useful during play but are no longer needed. Because the available components differ by title, read the labels in that game’s menu before confirming.
Check storage before starting a download
Make Settings > Storage a quick pre-download check. It is more reliable than comparing a store listing with the console’s nominal capacity, and it lets you choose between deletion, archiving and expansion before an installation is interrupted.
