How to Manage PS5 Storage for Large PlayStation Plus RPGs

If a large PlayStation Plus RPG will not fit, first check which installed games or add-ons are taking space. You can delete and later re-download games, archive PS5 installs on a USB drive, or add a compatible internal M.2 SSD. Those options work differently: PS5 games launch only from console storage or M.2 storage, while USB can hold them only until you transfer them back. Eligible Game Catalog titles may also be streamable without installing the full game, depending on your plan, region, title, and connection.

Check what is using space before changing anything

  1. Open Settings > Storage to see available space and storage categories.
  2. Choose Console Storage > Games and Apps to review installed games and their data.
  3. If a game shows Customize, check whether the title lets you remove selected add-ons or completed portions. This option is not available for every game.

Game installs and saved data are separate. Removing an installed game frees space used by its game files; it does not mean you have to give up access to a purchased game. Sony says purchases can be downloaded again from your Game Library.

Choose the storage option that fits how you play

Option Can a PS5 game launch from it? Best use Main trade-off
Built-in console storage Yes Play without moving the install Capacity is fixed
Compatible internal M.2 SSD Yes Keep more PS5 games installed and ready to launch Requires a compatible drive, installation, and a separate purchase
USB extended storage No; transfer the PS5 game back first Archive PS5 installs or play compatible PS4 games from the drive PS5 games must be moved to console or M.2 storage before play
Delete and re-download After reinstalling Free space without adding hardware Requires downloading and installing the game again
PlayStation Plus cloud storage No; it stores saved data Sync or transfer supported saves Does not store game installs and requires an active PS Plus membership
PlayStation Plus streaming Yes, as streamed play when eligible; it does not create a local game install Play an eligible title without downloading its full game files Plan, title, region, network, and some feature limitations apply

Delete a game when you are comfortable reinstalling it later

For a game you are not playing now, deleting its install is the simplest no-hardware way to reclaim space. Sony says purchased games can be downloaded again from the Game Library, so deletion does not remove the purchase entitlement. The cost is time and bandwidth to download and install it again when you want to return.

Use USB extended storage as an archive, not a PS5 launch drive

A compatible USB extended-storage drive can hold PS5 game data for later transfer, and compatible PS4 games can run directly from it. Sony’s storage guidance says commercially available drives can be formatted for extended storage; its Canada overview gives a capacity range of 250 GB to 8 TB. Confirm current regional support and compatibility before choosing a particular drive.

WD_BLACK 2TB SN850P NVMe M.2 SSD Officially Licensed Storage Expansion for PS5 Consoles, up to 7,300MB/s, with heatsink - WDBBYV0020BNC-WRSN
  • Officially licensed M.2 SSD for PlayStation 5 consoles[4] so you can easily install and play with no concern of compatibility. [4]For PlayStation 5 system software compatibility, please visit the official WD_BLACK site.
  • With capacities ranging from 1TB to 8TB[1], your PS5 console has the additional space to store up to 200 games[3] (8TB model) [1]1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1TB = one trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment. [3] Number of games based on a 36GB average per game. The number of games will vary based on file size, formatting, other programs, and factors.
  • Experience uninterrupted gameplay with a brand-new, optimized heatsink designed especially for the PS5 console for an easy, worry-free installation into the M.2 slot.
  • Play directly from the drive and eliminate the need to transfer or delete games from your console with tested and approved storage for your PS5 console[4].
  • Push the envelope of PCIe Gen 4 technology with read speeds up to 7,300MB/s[2], giving you seamless gameplay and incredibly short load times. [2]1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.

Sony’s instruction for PS5 titles is direct: “To play PS5 games, you need to move game data from your USB extended storage drive back to your PS5 console storage or M.2 SSD storage.” USB therefore helps avoid downloading a large game again, but it does not let you launch that PS5 game directly from the drive.

Add an internal M.2 SSD to keep more PS5 games launchable

A compatible internal M.2 NVMe SSD can store, download, copy, and launch PS5 games. Sony’s current US guidance specifies the following checks:

  • 【Compact Stick Type】The cable-free and compact USB stick design enables easy connection with your game console without taking up space.
  • 【Accessories】 Setup Guide / Warranty Statement

  • Capacity: 250 GB to 8 TB.
  • Supported length: 30, 42, 60, 80, or 110 mm.
  • Width: up to 25 mm including the cooling structure.
  • Thickness: up to 11.25 mm, subject to Sony’s specified limits above and below the board.
  • Read speed: Sony recommends sequential read speed of 5,500 MB/s or faster.
  • Cooling: effective heat dissipation is required; the drive may have a heatsink or need a separate cooling structure.

The generic label “M.2” is not enough to establish compatibility. Sony cautions that it cannot guarantee every third-party drive that meets the listed specifications will work. It also notes that a game may not perform exactly as it does on the built-in SSD, even when an M.2 drive exceeds the recommended read speed. Check the drive’s full dimensions, cooling arrangement, and manufacturer compatibility information before buying.

Install and format with care

Sony’s guide calls for the latest PS5 system software before installation and a #1 Phillips or cross-head screwdriver. The expansion-slot steps differ by console model group, so follow the instructions for your PS5 model. On first use, the console formats the entire M.2 SSD; that erases any existing data on the drive. Back up anything you need from it before installing and formatting.

Keep cloud saves separate from installed game files

PlayStation Plus cloud storage is for saved data, not game installs. Sony Interactive Entertainment / PlayStation Support states, “You can save up to 100 GB of PS5 saved data and 100 GB of PS4 saved data.” The support page does not state a publication year. Cloud saves require an active PlayStation Plus membership, but they will not free the space occupied by an installed RPG.

Stream an eligible Game Catalog title when installing is the problem

Sony allows eligible Game Catalog games to be downloaded or streamed with the required membership plan. Streaming availability depends on the current listing, title, plan, and region, so do not assume every RPG in the catalog is streamable. Sony states a minimum broadband speed of 5 Mbps for streaming; supported 1080p streaming requires at least 15 Mbps and a supported game. Resolution may drop if the connection falls below that level.

Streaming also omits or limits some features, including Remote Play, Share Play or Share Screen, and broadcasting. Check the game’s current PlayStation listing and your membership benefits before choosing streaming over a local install.
