Back up and restore a RimWorld Together world as one server-owned data set. Stop the server before copying its persistent directory, keep several dated generations outside the live installation, and restore the entire known-good directory with the same Together release and mod set. If you run the official container, that persistent data is the host RWTData directory mounted at /Data. The server’s automatic-backup controls are in BackupConfig.json; they supplement, rather than replace, an independently stored backup.
How RimWorld Together saves differ from ordinary RimWorld saves
A Together server is the authority for the shared world. Players do not each maintain an independent copy that can safely replace the server’s state. The first player to join creates the world that everyone will use, and subsequent sessions depend on the server’s persistent files.

The recovery unit is the persistent data directory
Back up the complete persistent data directory, not only a file that looks like a save in a graphical file browser. The directory contains the world state and the configuration needed to start the instance consistently. Keeping only one visible save can omit settings, server metadata, or other files required for a clean recovery.

Store copies outside the directory that the live server writes to. A second disk, a separate machine, or an object-storage location prevents a failed update, accidental deletion, or damaged host volume from destroying both the running copy and its backup.

Docker and the official container layout
The project provides an official container image and an example Docker Compose deployment. In that layout, a host directory named RWTData is mounted into the container at /Data. Preserve the host-side RWTData directory in every backup. Backing up only the container image or the compose file does not preserve the shared world.
Configuration is generated by the server
The server generates a Config directory. Administrators use those files for settings that are not changed through the game, while the documented in-game administration panel handles supported live changes. Treat configuration as part of the same recovery set: a world restored with unrelated or newer settings can behave differently even when the world files themselves are intact.
A safe manual backup procedure
Use a short maintenance window so no player can write new state while files are being copied. A file-level backup made while the server is changing files can contain a mixture of old and new data.
- Announce maintenance. Tell players when the server will stop and whether they should expect a rollback. Ask everyone to leave the world before the shutdown.
- Prevent new writes. Use the server’s normal shutdown process and do not begin copying while players are still connected. If your host provides a stop button, wait until the process is fully stopped rather than merely disconnected from the console.
- Stop the server cleanly. A clean stop lets the application finish writing its state. Do not kill the process unless it is unresponsive and you have no safer option; in that case, make a separate note that the copy follows an abnormal termination.
- Copy the complete persistent directory. For a conventional installation, copy the directory used by the Together server. For the container deployment, copy the host
RWTDatadirectory that is mounted at/Data. Include the generatedConfigdirectory and every other file under the persistent root. - Place the copy outside the live installation. Give the archive a label containing the date, server release, and the mod-list change or maintenance event that preceded it. This is an operational convention rather than a required filename, but it makes the correct generation identifiable during an incident.
- Record what changed. Note the Together version, RimWorld version, enabled mods, and any configuration edits. A backup without this context may be difficult to match to the client files later.
- Start the server again only after the copy is complete. Confirm that the expected world loads and that players can connect. Keep the archive even if the restart appears successful; many incompatibilities become visible only after a player loads a map or a site.

The wiki documents a backup at every server launch as well as backups at the configured interval. A launch backup is useful after an unexpected stop, but it is not a substitute for a dated archive kept outside the live directory. Automatic deletion also affects the local generations only; it does not create an off-host copy for you.
How to roll back to an older Together save
Rollback means replacing the current server data with one complete, known-good generation. Do not merge selected files from different dates unless you have a specific, tested reason; mixing generations can produce a world and configuration that were never valid together.
- Stop accepting players and stop the server. Announce that the world will be rewound and wait for a clean shutdown.
- Preserve the current state first. Rename or copy the current persistent directory to a separate incident folder. This gives you evidence for troubleshooting and lets you undo the rollback if the chosen archive is wrong.
- Select a complete archive. Use the label and change log to choose a generation from before the bad mod, server upgrade, or accidental edit. Verify that it contains the full persistent root, including
Config; for Docker, verify that it is a completeRWTDatacopy. - Match the software release. Restore using the Together server release and mod files that were used when the archive was created, or use a release explicitly compatible with that save. Release notes warn that existing sites from earlier saves may not work after an update that changes save behavior.
- Replace the live directory completely. Move the current directory aside and put the restored directory in the exact location expected by the server. In a container deployment, restore the host directory that is mounted at
/Datarather than editing files inside a disposable container layer. - Start and inspect before reopening the server. Watch startup logs, confirm that the expected world and sites appear, and check that the server reaches a stable state. If the process fails, stop it and return to the preserved incident copy instead of repeatedly altering the archive.
- Align clients before inviting players back. Every client must use the matching RimWorld Together version and the mod files required by that world. Tell players clearly that progress after the archive date no longer exists on the restored server.
The project documentation establishes the need for pre-upgrade backups and matching releases but does not publish a separate universal restore command. The reliable operation is therefore a controlled directory replacement followed by a version-matched restart.
When a rollback is appropriate
- A Together release explicitly changes save-impacting behavior.
- A major mod change causes a site, map, or world to fail to load.
- An administrator accidentally changes or deletes persistent data.
- The server starts but the world is demonstrably damaged and a recent known-good generation exists.
Rollback is not the first response to a player who cannot connect. Check address, port, firewall, and version prerequisites before discarding a healthy world.

Managing upgrades and mod changes without losing a world
Back up before every save-impacting release
The Together release notes specifically tell administrators to back up when moving to a release with an existing save. Make the archive before replacing server files, and keep it until the new release has been exercised in the real world. A backup made after the upgrade cannot recover a site that the upgrade already made unreadable.
Keep client and server versions identical
The version-management guidance requires the client and server to use the same RimWorld Together version. When downgrading, download the matching release and replace the client mod files as well as the server files. A server restored correctly can still appear broken when a player launches a different Together build.
Plan the mod list as part of the save
The first player establishes the original mod list. The server distinguishes required, optional, and forbidden mods. Make mods that alter the world, maps, factions, items, or other persistent data required for every player. Optional cosmetic or client-only additions can remain optional only when they do not change the shared simulation. A forbidden entry prevents a mod that would conflict with the server’s policy.

Settings that are often confused with backups
SyncLocalSave is not a backup system
SyncLocalSave controls whether the server checks if a save was modified between logins. It addresses synchronization behavior; it does not create a dated archive and cannot restore a deleted or corrupted world. Leave automatic backups and external copies in place regardless of this setting.
Use the in-game admin panel for supported changes
The documented administration route is:
- Enable developer mode in RimWorld.
- Run
deeplistto identify the player’s user ID. - Grant operator status with
opand the intended user ID. - Log in as that operator and open the Together admin menu.
Treat the user ID as sensitive administrative information. Use the panel for changes it supports instead of editing unrelated files while the server is running. File edits still require a maintenance stop and a fresh backup.

Confirm that the player’s RimWorld Together version exactly matches the server’s version. If the server was rolled back, clients may still have the newer mod files. Have affected players replace their client files with the same release used by the restored server.

Check address and port configuration
Verify the address and port in ServerConfigs.json. For a local test on the same machine, use 127.0.0.1 with the configured port. For internet play, confirm firewall access and port forwarding to the server host. When using a VPN, players must use the server’s VPN address rather than its public or local address.
Use a symptom-first diagnostic order

Self-hosting versus managed hosting for save control
The official deployment model supports a downloaded server or an official container. A managed service can operate that software for you, but the useful comparison is operational rather than a brand ranking.

Whichever model you choose, require a documented way to obtain the complete persistent directory. A service that offers a screenshot or a database export but not the Together data set may not provide a practical rollback path.
Vanilla RimWorld saves versus Together server backups
RimWorld’s ordinary single-player save system supports manual named saves and automatic saves. Save entries show date, time, and version metadata, and a manual save can overwrite an existing entry. Those behaviors describe local RimWorld saves, not the Together server’s recovery policy.

Copying a local player’s vanilla save does not back up the shared Together world. Likewise, restoring a Together directory is not the same as selecting an older entry from RimWorld’s local save screen.
Operational checklist for administrators
Before routine operation
- Identify the persistent directory and, for Docker, the host
RWTDatamount. - Confirm that
AutomaticBackups,IntervalHours,AutomaticDeletion, andAmountexpress the retention policy you intend. - Verify that at least one archive exists outside the live directory.
- Record the current Together release, RimWorld version, and mod list.
Before an upgrade or major mod change
- Announce a maintenance window and stop the server cleanly.
- Copy the complete persistent directory and label it with the release and change.
- Read the release notes for save-impacting warnings.
- Prepare matching client files and decide which world-affecting mods are required.
After an incident
- Preserve the current directory before attempting a rollback.
- Check versions, mods, address, port, firewall, forwarding, and VPN routing.
- Restore one complete known-good generation only when the evidence points to world or save damage.
- Start with the matching release, inspect the world, and document the result before reopening player access.
The durable approach is simple: treat the server’s persistent directory as the world, automate local generations, maintain independent copies, and make every restore a version-matched operation. That protects a Together colony from both software changes and the more common mistake of troubleshooting a connection problem by replacing healthy save data.
