How do I prioritize Steam downloads?
Steam has two different priority controls: queue order for updates already waiting, and a per-game preference for future automatic updates.

Reorder the current queue
- Open Downloads from the bottom of the Steam client, or use View > Downloads or Library > Downloads.
- Review active, completed, and waiting downloads, then reorder queued updates to put the game you want earlier.
This changes the order of the current queued work. To make one game a standing priority, use its update settings instead.
Set a persistent high priority
- In your Library, open the game’s Manage > Properties > Updates panel.
- Choose High Priority – Always auto-update this game before others.

How do I stop Steam from updating a game automatically?
For a game you want to defer, choose Only update this game when I launch it in Library > game > Manage > Properties > Updates. This is a temporary deferral, not a permanent freeze: launching the game forces its update immediately.
If you want Steam to update it routinely, choose Always keep this game updated. Use the launch-only option for individual games rather than changing a global download setting when your goal is to hold back just one title.

Can I schedule Steam updates overnight?
Yes. In Steam > Settings > Downloads, enable the option to limit when Steam automatically updates games, then choose a time range. Steam’s example says a midnight-to-8 a.m. window allows automatic updates only during those local hours.

How can I limit Steam download speed?
- Open Steam > Settings > Downloads.
- Choose a download bandwidth or speed limit that leaves capacity for other network activity.
- Check the Download Manager to see the configured limit; Steam also shows it in an update dialog displayed when launching a game.
Pay attention to units when translating your internet plan into a client limit. Steam’s rate options are expressed in kilobytes or megabytes per second, while internet plans are commonly advertised in bits per second. Mbps means megabits per second; MB/s means megabytes per second. The displayed options depend on whether Steam is configured to show rates in bytes or bits. Steam’s instructions for this control are in Setting Client Rates (Limit Download Speed) in Steam.
A bandwidth cap can limit resource use and help troubleshoot lag or poor multiplayer performance, but no particular cap guarantees a specific gameplay result.

Why do Steam downloads stop when I launch a game?
Steam automatically pauses downloads when a game launches so the game can take priority on the network. Steam Support describes this behavior in Downloads automatically pause when launching a game.

To let downloads continue, enable Allow Downloads During Gameplay in Steam > Settings > Downloads. If downloading affects network performance, set a speed limit there. Separately, a game’s Properties > Updates panel includes a choice about allowing or preventing other updates from downloading while that game is being played. The global and per-game controls serve different purposes; labels can vary by client version, so check the options shown in your Steam client.

Can I move Steam games to another drive without downloading them again?
Yes. Add or use another Steam Library folder on the destination drive, then move the installed game through its settings:
- In the Library, open the game’s Properties.
- Select Installed Files > Move Install Folder.
- Choose the destination Library folder.
Steam says games can be moved between configured Library folders without downloading them again. When installing a new game, choose among the available Library folders to use a different drive. This solves a storage or installation-location problem; it does not change update scheduling, queue order, or per-game update policy.
