Turn off recurring billing before the next charge
- Sign in with the account that purchased Game Pass. A subscription belongs to the Microsoft account used to buy it. If you do not see it, check other Microsoft accounts that may have made the purchase. If a child or family member owns the subscription, use that person’s account to manage it.
- Open Services & subscriptions. Find the Game Pass entry and select Manage.
- Choose the option to stop renewal. Depending on the subscription state and the interface, the page may offer Turn off recurring billing or cancellation prompts. Complete the steps shown and read the confirmation before leaving the page.
- Check the resulting status and date. Confirm that the subscription is set to expire and note the expiry date displayed. If the available option is Turn on recurring billing, recurring billing is already off; do not select it if your aim is to avoid another charge.
Microsoft describes turning off recurring billing as the way to cancel an Xbox subscription. Once renewal is off, access can continue until the subscription expires; it does not necessarily end immediately. Button names and prompts can vary with the subscription’s state and the account interface, so use the status and date shown for your own subscription as the confirmation.

Cancellation, expiry, and refunds are different
Stopping recurring billing prevents future automatic billing; it does not, by itself, show that you qualify for a refund or promise that the current term will end immediately. Microsoft says refund eligibility depends on factors including the subscription, timing, and country of purchase. If the cancellation flow presents a refund choice, review its terms before confirming. For Xbox-specific cancellation and refund guidance, use Microsoft’s cancellation instructions.
After completing the cancellation steps, return to the subscription listing and check whether it says Turn on recurring billing and displays an expiry date. That is the practical signal that renewal is already disabled. If you are uncertain whether an action has been saved, rely on the account’s displayed status rather than assuming that closing a prompt changed the subscription.

If Game Pass is missing or another company billed you
Check the purchasing account
First verify that you are signed in to the Microsoft account that purchased the subscription. Family members can have separate accounts, so a subscription owned by someone else may not appear in yours. The subscription owner needs to sign in and manage it from their account.
Manage a third-party purchase with the seller
If Microsoft did not bill you, the subscription may have been purchased through a third-party provider. Microsoft’s guidance is to manage a subscription bought through another provider with that provider. Check the seller’s account or billing controls rather than relying on the Microsoft Services & subscriptions page to cancel a charge it does not manage. Want to keep Game Pass but change how you pay?
If you intend to keep the subscription, inspect its recurrence, next charge or expiry information, payment method, and any plan-change choices on the Services & subscriptions page before making a change. Microsoft says payment-method and Xbox/Game Pass plan changes can be made through account settings when those options are available for the subscription. The options shown can depend on the account and subscription state.
Prepaid subscriptions are paid for in advance, and their payment method cannot be changed. Changing a payment method or plan is not the same as turning off recurring billing, so confirm the renewal status separately if avoiding the next automatic charge is your priority.

What to verify before you leave the account page
- The Game Pass subscription shown is the one you intend to manage.
- The page confirms recurring billing is off, or offers Turn on recurring billing as the available action.
- You have noted the expiry date displayed for the subscription.
- If you sought a refund, you reviewed the refund choice in the cancellation flow rather than assuming that turning off renewal automatically issues one.
- If another company billed you, you have identified that provider as the place to manage the subscription.
Prices, plan names, account controls, and refund choices can vary by region, billing provider, subscription state, and time. The account page and cancellation flow show the options that apply to your subscription.
