To manually install a modpack on a Minecraft: Java Edition server, use the pack’s exact Minecraft version and modloader build, install that loader in the server directory, upload and extract the pack’s server files, start the loader-generated server entry point, accept the EULA, configure server.properties, and make every client match the same compatibility combination. A server pack is the safest starting point. If no server download exists, you must separate server-required files from client-only files yourself.

What must match before you install anything

Modpacks are not interchangeable collections of files. Their Minecraft version, loader family, loader build, pack release and dependencies form one compatibility set. CurseForge support describes Forge and Fabric as modloaders that let mods run in Minecraft and notes that a mod and its profile must use the same compatible loader. Forge, Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt are separate loader families; a Forge server cannot be started with a Fabric loader, and a near-but-different build can fail just as decisively.

This guide applies to Minecraft: Java Edition servers. It does not cover Bedrock servers, which use a different add-on and server ecosystem.

Record the pack’s identity

Before downloading or replacing files, write down all of the following from the specific pack release you intend to run:

#1 Best Overall
Minecraft | Java & Bedrock Deluxe Collection | Windows Digital Code
  • DELUXE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, three Bedrock add-ons, three exclusive Character Creator items, and 700 Minecoins.
  • CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
  • EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world filled with surprises.
  • SURVIVE THE ADVENTURE — Face mysterious foes, travel across exciting landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
  • PLAY TOGETHER — Play cross-platform with friends in Bedrock Edition on console, mobile, and PC, or join community servers in Java Edition on PC, Mac, and Linux. Online console multiplayer requires a platform-specific subscription (sold separately).
  • Minecraft version, such as the exact 1.x release shown by the pack.
  • Loader family: Forge, Fabric, NeoForge or Quilt.
  • Exact loader build or installer version.
  • Pack version or release number.
  • Whether the author supplies a server pack or server files.

Do not choose a loader because it is newer, because it has a similar name, or because it works with another pack. The server and every player’s client must use the pack’s declared Minecraft version and loader family/build.

Check the host’s capabilities

You need a server directory you can write to, a way to upload files (a host file manager, FTP or SFTP), permission to run a custom Java server command, access to startup logs, and a way to select the Java executable if the host offers multiple runtimes. Some managed hosts permit only approved software or fixed startup commands; if custom modpacks are prohibited, a correct upload will not solve the problem.

Choose the right installation source

Installation source What you receive Advantages Risks and decisions
Author-provided server pack A server-oriented archive and usually a prepared directory layout Client-only material is normally removed; required configs, scripts and dependencies are arranged for server use You still must install the matching loader, set Java and configure the server
Client pack with no server download The files intended for a player’s instance Often the only available option You must identify and remove client-only mods and preserve server-relevant configs, scripts and data; there is no universal removal list
Fresh loader installation with selected files A loader-generated server directory plus files you copy deliberately Useful for diagnosing a damaged pack or building a controlled deployment Easy to omit a dependency or configuration that the pack expects

Prefer the server pack from the pack author or its established distribution page. A server archive generally reflects the author’s intended directory structure and avoids the most common mistake: copying a player’s complete client instance onto a server.

Manual installation: the complete procedure

1. Stop the server and make a recoverable backup

For a new server, create an empty directory dedicated to this pack. For an existing world, stop the server cleanly before changing files. Copy the world directory and the configuration files to storage outside the live server directory. Include server.properties, the whitelist and operator files, and any pack-specific config, defaultconfigs, scripts or data directories you may need to restore.

Do not extract a new pack over a live installation without a backup. Replacing mods or configs while the server is running can leave a partially updated directory and make it difficult to determine which files caused a failure.

2. Download the exact release and, if available, its server pack

Open the pack’s release or file page and verify the Minecraft version, loader label, loader build and pack version you recorded. Download the server archive rather than the ordinary client profile when both are offered. Keep the original archive until the server has started and players have connected successfully.

If the download contains instructions or a startup script, retain them. Some packs expect a particular directory layout or a generated command rather than a manually chosen JAR.

3. Install the matching server loader

Install the exact Forge, Fabric, NeoForge or Quilt version named by the pack. Run the loader installer or installation procedure in the server directory, following that loader’s server documentation. The operation should create a loader-specific server entry point, libraries and supporting files.

Install the loader in the same directory that will contain the pack and from which the server will be launched. Installing it in one directory and starting a JAR in another is a common reason a server appears to run vanilla or reports that files are missing.

Do not install multiple loader families into one deployment. If you are changing from Forge to Fabric, use a separate directory and a compatible world backup; the two loaders are not interchangeable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Upload and extract the server files

Use the host’s file manager, FTP or SFTP to upload the server archive. Extract it in the server directory, not in an extra nested folder that the startup command does not use. After extraction, inspect the top level: the loader-generated files, mods, configuration directories and any pack scripts should be where the server process can read them.

A nested path such as server/server-pack/mods is not automatically wrong, but the startup command, working directory and all relative paths must point to that same location. If the host’s control panel always starts from a fixed directory, place the files there or change the startup path.

5. Select the Java runtime and prepare startup

Use the Java executable required by the loader and pack documentation. Hosts and launchers may expose more than one Java runtime; select the intended one explicitly when the control panel allows it. A wrong runtime can prevent the loader from launching before Minecraft has a chance to report a mod error.

Start the loader-generated server command or JAR from the server directory. The filename differs by loader and release, so use the file created by the installer or the command supplied with the server pack rather than guessing. A generic command pattern, when your host requires a direct Java command, is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

java -jar <loader-generated-server-jar> nogui

Replace the angle-bracketed value with the actual generated entry point; do not literally enter the brackets. If the pack provides a shell or batch script, use that script when it is compatible with your host. The important distinction is that the process must launch the loader-generated server entry point, not the unmodified vanilla server JAR.

6. Complete the first startup and EULA step

The first launch normally creates or updates server files and stops until you accept Minecraft’s EULA. Read the EULA, then change the generated EULA setting to indicate acceptance only if you agree to it. Restart with the same loader command.

Watch the first startup log from the beginning. Loader initialization, dependency resolution and mod-registration messages appear before the final crash summary. The earliest meaningful error is usually more useful than the last exception, which may only describe the cascade caused by the original problem.

7. Configure server.properties

After the initial files exist, edit server.properties while the server is stopped. Set the values your group needs, including:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • level-name for the world directory to load or create.
  • gamemode and difficulty.
  • white-list and the corresponding whitelist entries.
  • The listening port and other network settings required by your host.

Save the file, then start the server again. If you are retaining an existing world, make sure level-name exactly matches that world directory. A spelling difference can make the server generate a new world and look as though the original save disappeared.

8. Align every player’s client

Each player must install a client profile compatible with the server: the same Minecraft version, loader family, loader build and pack release. A player using a different loader family cannot join merely by having files with similar names.

Client-only mods belong on the client and should not be copied to the server. Examples vary by pack, so use the pack author’s documentation or the mod’s stated side support rather than relying on a universal list. Conversely, a server-required mod or library must be present in the server’s mods directory and in any client profile that needs it to connect.

9. Test in a controlled order

  1. Start the server and wait for the loader to report that it is ready for connections.
  2. Join locally or from a test account before inviting the whole group.
  3. Check that the expected world loaded, the pack’s key features work and no repeated errors appear in the log.
  4. Test a second client with the same pack release to catch distribution mistakes.
  5. Only then enable normal public access, port forwarding or a larger whitelist.

Installing a pack that has no server download

A missing server archive does not prove that the pack cannot run on a server. It means the deployment requires pack-specific judgment. Install the loader version named in the pack manifest or profile first, then examine the client pack before copying files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the server-relevant material

Review the client pack’s mods, config, defaultconfigs, scripts and data directories. Preserve configuration and data that the pack’s instructions identify as server-side or shared. Copy required libraries and gameplay mods into the server’s mods directory, maintaining the directory structure expected by the pack.

Remove client-only material carefully

Do not upload every client mod automatically. Rendering, HUD, input, replay and other presentation features may be client-only, but the exact classification is pack-specific. A mod that is harmless on a client can make a dedicated server refuse to start, while another mod may require both sides even if most of its visible effect appears client-side.

Preserve loader-generated files

Do not replace the loader’s generated libraries, launch files or server configuration with files copied blindly from the client instance. The server should retain its own loader-generated entry point and use the client pack only as a source for compatible mods and configuration.

Why a modded server starts as vanilla

A server that accepts connections but has no modded behavior is usually launching the wrong entry point or the wrong directory.

  • The control panel is starting the vanilla server JAR instead of the loader-generated command.
  • The loader was installed in a different directory from the one being launched.
  • The archive was extracted into a nested folder, while the startup command runs one level above it.
  • The host reset the startup command after an update.

Stop the process, inspect the working directory and startup command, and confirm that loader libraries and the generated server entry point are present there. Do not solve this by copying more client mods into the directory; the loader must initialize first.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The loader crashes immediately

Recheck the Minecraft version and exact loader build on both the server and client. CurseForge documentation treats incompatible game versions and loaders as incompatible profiles. Confirm that you did not install Forge files for a Fabric, NeoForge or Quilt pack, or select a “close” build that the release does not declare.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Then verify Java. Check which executable the host or launcher selected and compare it with the loader’s documented requirement. A runtime mismatch can fail before a useful mod stack trace appears.

The log reports a missing dependency

Read the first dependency message and identify the named library, required version and side. Compare it with the pack’s declared dependencies. Upload the required library to the correct mods directory, remove duplicate or incompatible copies, and restart. Do not download an arbitrary newer file simply because its name looks similar.

The client is rejected for a mod mismatch

Compare the server and client mod lists, versions and loader builds. Remove client-only content from the server, but add any server-required dependency that is absent. If the message names a mod that must exist on both sides, install the same compatible release in both profiles.

The server loads but creates the wrong world

Stop the server and verify level-name, capitalization and the location of the world directory. Restore the backup if a test launch generated a new world over an unintended path. Never delete the original world until you have confirmed that the intended save loads correctly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Players cannot connect

Confirm the server is listening on the configured port, that the host firewall permits it, and that router port forwarding points to the correct machine when you host from a private network. Check the whitelist and the address players are using. The official Minecraft Java server guidance and your router documentation cover the network-specific steps; the modpack itself does not replace those settings.

The host cannot access or launch the files

Check file ownership and permissions, the upload method and the host’s custom-modpack policy. An incomplete FTP/SFTP transfer can leave an archive that extracts successfully but lacks libraries. Re-upload the original archive, compare the extracted directory with the pack’s instructions, and confirm that the startup command has permission to execute the generated entry point.

Updating, changing packs and protecting the world

Treat every pack update as a migration, not a file overwrite. Stop the server, copy the world and configuration, record the old pack and loader versions, then install the new release in a separate directory when possible. Test the copied world first. Only replace the live deployment after the loader starts cleanly and a client using the new release can connect.

Do not downgrade a world or remove content mods casually. A pack may store blocks, entities or configuration data that a different release cannot interpret. Keep the previous directory and backup until the new installation has been used successfully.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manual installation versus managed administration

Manual deployment is worthwhile when you want direct control over files, loader versions, backups, Java selection and logs. It also makes troubleshooting transparent because you can inspect the exact directory and command.

A managed service can reduce routine administration when it provides custom file access, supported Java selection, scheduled backups, readable logs and permission to run the loader your pack needs. Before committing, verify those capabilities rather than assuming that a Minecraft plan accepts arbitrary modpacks. A control panel that hides the startup command or blocks custom JARs may be less suitable than a basic host with reliable SFTP access.
