In Minecraft 1.21 and later, start a raid by drinking an Ominous Bottle to receive Bad Omen, then entering a valid village. Bad Omen changes to Raid Omen, and the raid begins only after a 30-second countdown expires. To win, kill every raider in all waves while keeping villagers alive; any player who kills at least one raid mob receives Hero of the Village.

What a Minecraft raid is

A raid is a timed village attack by hostile illagers. Raiders arrive in waves and are tracked by a raid boss bar. The encounter ends in victory only when every raider has been killed. Pillagers, vindicators and ravagers form the core of raids; stronger difficulties also add evokers, vexes and witches, with some differences between Java and Bedrock editions.

Raids are optional events. You do not need a special weapon, structure or purchased item to start one. The essential requirements are an Ominous Bottle, a villager and a recognized village point of interest such as a claimed bed.

What changed in Minecraft 1.21

Before 1.21, carrying Bad Omen into a village could trigger a raid immediately. The current system separates the effect from the event. Mojang’s official 1.21 release notes state, “Bad Omen no longer triggers a Raid directly when entering a Village.”

In the present system, drinking an Ominous Bottle gives you Bad Omen. When you enter a village, Bad Omen converts to Raid Omen. A 30-second timer then gives you a final opportunity to cancel. If the timer expires, the raid starts at the location where you gained Raid Omen. The raid boss bar appears when the event begins.

Village requirements

The game must recognize the destination as a village before the conversion to Raid Omen can occur. The minimum practical setup is:

  • At least one villager.
  • At least one claimed bed or another recognized village point of interest.

A collection of houses without a villager and claimed point of interest is not enough. Confirm that a villager is linked to the bed or other recognized point of interest before you carry Bad Omen into the area. Protecting the villager before starting is also much easier than trying to repair an exposed settlement after waves arrive.

How to start a raid after 1.21

  1. Obtain an Ominous Bottle. In current 1.21 mechanics, this is the intended way to obtain Bad Omen.
  2. Drink it away from the village. This gives you time to place walls, gather equipment and move villagers into safer positions before the event can be armed.
  3. Enter the village. Make sure the area contains at least one villager and a claimed bed or another recognized village point of interest.
  4. Watch for Raid Omen. Bad Omen changes to Raid Omen as you enter the recognized village area.
  5. Use the 30-second cancellation window if necessary. Drinking milk removes the effect before it expires and prevents the raid from starting.
  6. Let the timer expire when ready. The raid then begins at the location where you received Raid Omen, and the raid boss bar appears.

If you want a controlled fight, do not drink the bottle while standing inside the settlement. Trigger the effect at a staging area, finish your preparations and approach the village only when you are ready to accept the countdown.

Prepare before the countdown ends

The 30 seconds after Raid Omen appears is preparation time, not a combat phase. Use it to make the village harder to overrun and to ensure you can fight at both long and short range.

Minecraft: Switch Edition
  • Explore randomly-generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
  • Play in Creative Mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armour to fend off the dangerous mobs
  • Armor: Wear your strongest practical armor before entering the village.
  • Weapons: Carry a bow or crossbow for distance and a melee weapon for enemies that reach your position.
  • Shield: A shield gives you a safer answer to incoming attacks while you reposition.
  • Food: Bring enough food to recover between waves rather than relying on whatever is stored in village chests.
  • Blocks: Spare blocks let you close entrances, raise a temporary firing position or seal a dangerous gap.
  • Water bucket: Water can help control movement and create space when several enemies approach together.

Move villagers behind walls or into houses with controlled entrances. Clear nearby caves and other obstructed terrain before the raid starts. Raiders can be present without being visible from the village center, and terrain that is easy to overlook makes the boss bar difficult to resolve later.

How many waves are in a raid?

The standard wave count depends on difficulty. The following counts are the normal baseline described for raids:

Difficulty Standard waves
Easy 3
Normal 5
Hard 7

Java Edition can add a further wave when the raid is started with an omen level above I. Higher omen levels also improve the chance that raiders have enchanted equipment in Java. Bedrock Edition ties the wave count to difficulty rather than using Java’s additional-wave behavior.

Raid enemies and the safest response

Enemy lineups vary by difficulty and edition, but each major raider rewards a different priority.

Raider Where it matters Practical response
Pillager Appears across raid difficulties and attacks from range. Use a bow or crossbow from cover and avoid standing in an open line of fire.
Vindicator Appears across raid difficulties and is especially dangerous at close range. Keep distance; if several close at once, retreat behind blocks instead of letting them surround you.
Ravager Appears across raid difficulties as a large mounted or ground threat. Use open space, ranged attacks and blocks to control its approach; do not let it pin you against a wall.
Evoker Associated with Normal and Hard raids. Identify and eliminate it promptly because its attacks add pressure while other raiders occupy you.
Vex Associated with Evokers in Normal and Hard encounters. Keep moving and continue searching around cover when flying attackers appear.
Witch Associated with Normal and Hard raids, with composition differences between editions. Prioritize it when the fight is crowded so its support does not prolong the wave.

The exact composition can differ between Java and Bedrock, especially for evokers, vexes, witches and mounted ravagers. Treat the table as a role guide rather than a promise that every listed enemy appears in every wave.

A reliable combat plan

1. Hold a defensible position

Fight from a place with a wall, doorway or other block arrangement between you and at least one direction of attack. Keep a route open for retreat. A position that gives you a clear view of the village while preventing a flank is more valuable than a tall platform that leaves you exposed.

2. Thin ranged attackers first

Use your bow or crossbow against grouped pillagers while they are still at a distance. Cover reduces incoming fire and lets you choose when to expose yourself. Do not chase a single pillager into terrain that could hide a second group.

3. Prevent melee encirclement

Vindicators become dangerous when several reach you together. Back away before they surround you, place blocks to split their approach and switch to your melee weapon only when the space is controlled. A shield and a narrow entrance can turn a rush into separate engagements.

4. Deal with ravagers without getting trapped

Ravagers can force you out of a position and create openings for other raiders. Keep room to move, use ranged attacks when possible and avoid fighting with your back against a solid obstacle. A water bucket or quickly placed blocks can buy the distance needed to recover control.

5. Remove high-impact support enemies

On Normal and Hard, look for evokers and witches once the immediate melee threat is under control. Evokers can produce vexes, so leaving one alive while you search for ordinary pillagers can make the encounter harder to finish.

6. Reset between waves

After a wave is cleared, eat, repair your positioning and check that villagers remain protected. Refill your line of sight before moving into unexplored terrain. The next wave can arrive before you have fully restored a poor position, so use each lull deliberately.

When the raid bar remains but no raider is visible

A full or partially filled raid bar means at least one raider is still alive. Do not assume the event is stuck immediately. Search methodically:

  1. Walk the entire village perimeter rather than circling only the center.
  2. Check nearby caves and depressions.
  3. Inspect obstructed terrain, walls and other places where a raider can be out of direct sight.
  4. Use the sound and direction of combat to narrow the search, then approach with your shield ready.
  5. Recheck the perimeter after clearing the first hidden group; more than one raider may be separated from the main fight.

Keeping nearby terrain clear before the raid begins reduces the number of hiding places and makes this search much faster.

Java Edition and Bedrock Edition differences

The basic workflow is shared: obtain Bad Omen from an Ominous Bottle, enter a valid village, wait through Raid Omen, fight the waves and kill every raider. The important differences are in scaling, enemy composition and rewards.

Feature Java Edition Bedrock Edition
Standard wave count 3 on Easy, 5 on Normal and 7 on Hard. 3 on Easy, 5 on Normal and 7 on Hard.
Effect of omen level An omen level above I can add a further wave and improves the chance of enchanted raider equipment. Wave count follows difficulty rather than Java’s additional-wave rule.
Raider composition Evoker, vex and witch participation follows Java’s raid rules. Composition differs in some encounters, including the treatment of mounted ravagers.
Victory presentation Players who killed a raid mob receive Hero of the Village; Java also records the related advancement and grants 100 experience. Players who killed a raid mob receive Hero of the Village; the advancement and experience presentation differs from Java.

Because composition rules are edition-specific, a strategy that depends on one exact lineup may not transfer perfectly. The safest cross-edition approach is to carry both ranged and melee weapons, protect villagers and search the full perimeter whenever the bar remains.

What happens when you win

The raid ends in victory after the final raider is killed. Every player who killed at least one raid mob receives the Hero of the Village effect. In Java Edition, the related advancement also grants 100 experience. The reward is tied to participation: simply standing in the village while another player defeats every raider is not enough to qualify.

Common mistakes and fixes

Entering before you are ready

Because Bad Omen no longer starts a raid immediately on village entry, use the separation between drinking the Ominous Bottle and approaching the village. If you need more time after Raid Omen appears, drink milk before the 30-second timer expires.

Using an unrecognized settlement

If the area has no villager linked to a claimed bed or other recognized point of interest, it may not function as a village for raid purposes. Verify the village anchor before carrying Bad Omen into the area.

Fighting in open ground

Open ground lets pillagers shoot while vindicators and ravagers close from multiple directions. Build a defensible position and leave yourself a retreat route before the countdown ends.

Ignoring the boss bar

The raid is not over when the visible group is defeated. If the bar remains, search the perimeter, caves and obstructed terrain until every raider is found.

Leaving villagers exposed

Unprotected villagers can be caught in the battle while you pursue raiders. Move them behind walls or inside houses with controlled access before starting the event.
