EmuDeck does not provide one universal automatic-mapping control for every emulator. First check the game’s Steam Input layout; if that is correct but buttons are still wrong, adjust the bindings in the emulator. Cemu has a documented controller-add workflow that can map a connected controller, while other emulators may require manual binding changes.
Start with the right control layer
EmuDeck uses two places that can affect what a button does: Steam Input, which provides a standardized control layer across emulators, and the emulator’s own input settings. Check Steam Input first, then change emulator bindings only if the layout is suitable but the game still responds incorrectly. EmuDeck notes that Steam Input can also conflict with some native external-controller features. EmuDeck’s external-controller guidance and Controls 101 describe these separate layers.
Choose the Steam Input layout in Game Mode
- In Game Mode, open the affected game or emulator’s Controller screen.
- Select the current layout at the top of the screen and choose an available EmuDeck profile if one is offered for that emulator.
- If there is no specific EmuDeck profile, select Gamepad with Joystick Trackpad, which EmuDeck recommends when no emulator-specific profile is available.
Some EmuDeck Steam Input profiles include emulator hotkeys as well as ordinary gamepad controls. If you rely on hotkeys, choose the intended profile rather than assuming a plain gamepad layout is equivalent. See EmuDeck’s Steam Input FAQ.
Fix incorrect bindings in the emulator
If the Steam Input layout is appropriate but buttons still trigger the wrong actions, open the emulator’s input configuration and map the controls there. The menu names differ by emulator, so use that emulator’s input settings rather than looking for a single EmuDeck-wide binding screen. Some emulators let you save a separate profile, which preserves EmuDeck’s default configuration. EmuDeck Controls 101 recommends changing controls in the emulator when its defaults do not match expectations.

On Steam Deck in Desktop Mode, hold the Start button for three seconds to switch the controller from desktop controls to gamepad controls before navigating emulator menus. This avoids trying to configure gamepad bindings while the Deck is still acting as a desktop controller.
Use Cemu’s documented controller-add workflow for automatic mapping
EmuDeck documents an automatic controller-add path for Cemu; this is a Cemu-specific procedure, not evidence of a universal auto-map feature shared by all EmuDeck emulators.

- Open Cemu’s input settings.
- Add a controller and select SDLController as the API.
- Select the connected controller, then click Add.
- Save the resulting configuration as a uniquely named profile.
These steps are from the EmuDeck Cemu guide for SteamOS. For other emulators, use their own documented input configuration; the Cemu steps should not be assumed to work elsewhere.
Troubleshoot an external controller
When a native feature such as gyro is missing
Steam Input standardizes controls across Steam Deck emulators, but EmuDeck warns that it may not expose some native features of an external controller, including gyro. For the affected game, open its Controller screen, open the gear menu, and disable Steam Input. Restarting the game may be necessary for the change to take effect. Consult EmuDeck’s external-controller documentation for this route.

When the wrong device is Player 1 or inputs are duplicated
For multiplayer with external controllers, check the controller order in Steam Deck’s Quick Access menu. EmuDeck says device order can determine which controller is recognized as Player 1. Its guidance also says that users encountering double inputs with the 8BitDo Ultimate 2.4G Wireless Controller may try disabling Steam Input for the affected game; this is a targeted troubleshooting step, not a general remedy for every controller problem. If you changed a setting accidentally or controls remain unusable, restore the emulator configuration from EmuDeck’s Manage Emulators page. On Windows, EmuDeck’s known-issues instructions say to select the emulator and use Reset configuration. A reset removes the current configuration, so note any custom profile choices you want to recreate first. See Controls 101 and the Windows known-issues page.
