Choose PS5 if the games you most want are on PlayStation, you value DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers in supported games, or you want access to the PS4 library. Choose Xbox Series X if Game Pass’s current offer suits the games you play, you want access to supported titles from several Xbox generations, or you value its dedicated storage expansion card. Neither console is the universal winner: check your friends’ platform, whether you need a disc drive, and the local console and subscription prices before deciding.
Which console fits your games?
Start with the titles you expect to play, not a general claim that one platform has “better games.” Make a short list of must-plays, then check where each is available now. A console-exclusive game can make the decision straightforward, but exclusivity and subscription catalogs can change over time.
- Lean PS5 if its console-exclusive games are the ones you want, or if the PS4 games you already own matter to you.
- Lean Xbox Series X if the games in the current Game Pass offer are a strong match, or if you want to revisit supported Xbox One, Xbox 360, or original Xbox titles.
- Check with your friends before buying. The platform they use may affect how easily you can play together, depending on the game.
Sony says PS5 can play over 8,500 PS4 games; this is Sony Interactive Entertainment’s manufacturer-published figure, accessed in 2026, not an independent audit. Microsoft describes thousands of games across four Xbox generations. Both claims describe broad compatibility, not a guarantee that every older title works. Check the specific games you care about on the PlayStation 5 overview and Xbox Series X product page.
Compare the exact console versions
“PS5” and “Xbox Series X” each cover different configurations. The Sony US listing reviewed is the slim CFI-2100 model group with a disc drive and 1 TB built-in storage. Microsoft lists three Series X options: 1 TB Carbon Black, 2 TB Galaxy Black, and an all-digital 1 TB white version.

Disc or digital: decide what you need
If you have physical games or want to use game discs, compare disc-equipped models only. The reviewed PS5 Slim has a disc drive, as do the Xbox Series X Carbon Black and Galaxy Black configurations. The 1 TB white Series X is all-digital, so it is not a like-for-like choice for someone who needs a drive.

Also consider whether you plan to use disc-based movies, buy used physical games, or keep a collection. Those preferences can affect the value of a disc-equipped console, but the actual savings depend on the prices and offers available where you live. Compare the total cost of the console and the games you expect to buy rather than assuming either format is always cheaper.
How do Game Pass and PlayStation Plus compare?
Subscriptions can change the value of either system, but the useful comparison is the games and benefits you will actually use—not the largest advertised catalog count. Microsoft promotes Game Pass benefits that include hundreds of games and day-one releases; its comparison page describes Game Pass Ultimate as bundling hundreds of games, online multiplayer, EA Play, and day-one releases. Sony offers PlayStation Plus membership plans with an evolving PS5 and PS4 game catalog, and promotes classic games as well.

Plan names, prices, entitlements, and included games can change, and options and pricing vary by market. Check the current local plan details and search both catalogs for your own shortlist before subscribing. Sony’s US PS5 listing says a paid PlayStation Plus subscription is required for online multiplayer. What happens to your older games and accessories?
The backward-compatible libraries are not interchangeable. Sony’s stated PS4 compatibility and Microsoft’s four-generation description can help if you already own games, but support is title-specific. Verify the exact game before you count it as part of the value of a new console.

Microsoft says Xbox One games, saves, achievements, and friends carry over to Series X. It also says most Xbox One controllers and accessories are compatible. If you are moving from PS4, the Sony library figure is useful, but it does not establish that every PS4 accessory works with PS5; check compatibility for the specific device you plan to reuse.

The reviewed PS5 Slim has 1 TB built in, though some space is reserved for system software. Xbox offers 1 TB and 2 TB Series X configurations. Microsoft also sells a Series X|S Storage Expansion Card that connects through the dedicated expansion port and, according to Microsoft, matches the internal custom SSD’s performance.

Microsoft also notes support for USB 3.1 external hard drives. Do not assume an ordinary external drive behaves like the expansion card for every current-generation game. If storage is a deciding factor, compare the model’s listed capacity and the manufacturer’s current requirements for the expansion option. The product pages cited here do not establish a specific PS5 M.2 drive recommendation or its current compatibility and installation requirements.
Controllers and performance claims
Sony highlights DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers in supported games. Xbox highlights its wireless controller and compatibility with most Xbox One controllers and accessories. These are different features, not proof that one controller is more comfortable: comfort depends on personal preference, so try each if you can.
Both manufacturers describe 4K gaming and high-frame-rate capabilities, with output or performance targets up to 120 frames per second. Those specifications are not a guarantee that every game runs at 4K or reaches 120 fps. A fair performance comparison needs current, game-by-game testing on matching settings and displays; the product claims alone do not settle which console performs better in a shared game.

- Write down your must-play games. Confirm each game’s current platform availability and whether it is included in a subscription you would actually buy.
- Check your existing library. Look up specific PS4 or Xbox titles and accessories rather than assuming broad backward compatibility covers every item.
- Ask where your friends play. Check whether the games you share support playing together across platforms.
- Choose disc or digital deliberately. Compare the disc-equipped PS5 Slim or Xbox Series X disc models if you need physical media; consider the all-digital Xbox only if a drive is unnecessary.
- Compare total local cost. Include the console configuration, games, any subscription, and storage expansion you expect to need. No current street-price winner is established by the product listings cited here.
- Decide which controller and storage setup suits you. Use the features that matter to you; do not treat manufacturer performance claims as a substitute for checking the games you play.
