The safest general-purpose migration is a logical dump and restore: export SQL from the source with mysqldump, transfer it over an encrypted channel, and import it into the destination with mysql. For InnoDB, add --single-transaction to obtain a consistent online snapshot; add --quick so rows stream instead of filling client memory. Very large tables may load faster with --tab and mysqlimport, while replication is the better design when the final write pause must be short. MySQL 8.4’s Clone plugin is efficient for compatible servers in the same server series, but it is not a general cross-version migration method.

Choose the migration method before touching production
MySQL’s 8.4 Reference Manual describes logical dump and restore as “The easiest (although not the fastest) way to move a database between two machines.” It is portable across operating systems and CPU architectures because it recreates objects and rows as SQL statements. The right method depends on data volume, downtime, version compatibility, and whether replication or account privileges must move with the data.

| Logical dump and restore | You need the most portable, auditable procedure for one or more databases | Writes normally pause for the final consistency check and cutover; the initial export can run while InnoDB serves reads | Works across architectures and many version combinations, but replays definitions and rows and can be slow for very large datasets |
--tab plus mysqlimport |
Large tables make one-INSERT-at-a-time replay impractical | Similar cutover requirements to a dump, with faster bulk loading potential | Separates SQL definitions from delimited data files; requires secure handling of a directory containing multiple files |
| Replication-assisted migration | The application cannot tolerate a long write outage | Keep source serving traffic, replicate changes, then pause writes briefly for the final delta | Adds configuration and monitoring work; requires a consistent source snapshot and binary-log or GTID planning |
| Clone plugin | Provisioning all data and replication settings between compatible MySQL servers | Designed for direct, fast instance transfer rather than a row-by-row replay | Donor and recipient must be in the same MySQL server series, such as compatible 8.4 patch releases; do not treat it as a universal cross-version tool |
Prepare both servers
Inventory what must move
- Record the source and destination MySQL versions and server series. A database dump is generally the safest choice when versions, operating systems, or architectures differ.
- List every database, table, view, stored procedure, function, trigger, and event used by the application. A dump of one application schema does not automatically move accounts stored in the
mysqlsystem database. - Identify storage engines. The online snapshot pattern using
--single-transactionis intended for InnoDB; nontransactional tables need a different consistency plan. - Measure destination disk space for the restored data, temporary dump files, indexes, and binary logs. Compression reduces transfer size but does not remove the need for working space during import.
- Decide how the application will reach the new host: a connection-setting change, DNS change, or another controlled configuration switch. Prepare the change before the cutover window.
Protect credentials and transport
Use an encrypted administrative connection for every transfer and restrict the dump directory so only the migration account can read it. Do not place database passwords directly in a command that will be retained in shell history. Remove temporary dump and data files after the destination has been verified and the rollback retention period has expired.
Define a rollback point
Keep the original server intact until the application has passed its production checks on the destination. Write down the condition that triggers rollback, the connection setting to restore, and how writes made after cutover will be handled. A rollback plan is part of the migration, not an emergency improvisation.

Standard migration: stream a logical dump directly
This is the shortest path for a single database when the source can reach the destination’s MySQL port. Create the destination schema first, then pipe the dump into the remote client:
- On the source, create the empty database on the target:
mysqladmin -h target-host create db_name. Supply authentication through your normal secure MySQL option or login-path configuration rather than exposing a password in the command line. - Run the logical transfer:
mysqldump db_name | mysql -h target-host db_name. The source client emits SQL and the target client executes it as the stream arrives. - Wait for both commands to exit successfully. A shell pipeline can hide an upstream failure on some systems, so inspect the dump and client exit status according to your shell’s error-handling settings.
- Perform the verification steps below before changing application traffic.
A plain database-name dump contains the schema’s objects and data, but it does not create the database itself. If you want the dump to carry CREATE DATABASE and USE statements, include the database option: mysqldump --databases db_name | mysql -h target-host. For several databases, use --databases db1 db2.
Use a compressed dump when a file is easier to manage
A file gives you a resumable handoff, an artifact to inspect, and the option to transfer outside the database connection. The documented pattern is:
- Create a streamed, compressed dump on the source:
mysqldump --quick db_name | gzip > db_name.sql.gz. - Copy
db_name.sql.gzto the destination through an encrypted transfer channel. Preserve restrictive file permissions during the copy. - Create the empty destination schema:
mysqladmin create db_name. - Restore it:
gunzip < db_name.sql.gz | mysql db_name. - Record the command’s exit status and keep the compressed file only as long as your retention and rollback policy requires.
Use mysqldump --databases db_name instead when the restore should include database-creation and selection statements. For an entire instance, --all-databases is available, but review its system schemas before importing them into a different server.
Make the dump consistent without exhausting memory
--single-transaction for InnoDB
For an InnoDB workload, add --single-transaction to establish a transactionally consistent view without locking every table for the duration of the export. A typical command is mysqldump --single-transaction --quick db_name | gzip > db_name.sql.gz. This is an online-backup pattern, not a guarantee for nontransactional tables or for schema changes made while the dump is running. Avoid concurrent DDL that could invalidate the snapshot, and schedule structural changes separately.

--quick for row streaming
--quick tells mysqldump to retrieve and emit rows incrementally rather than buffering an entire table in client memory. It is particularly important for large tables and can be combined with both direct streaming and compressed files.
Binary-log coordinates and GTIDs
If the destination will become a replication source or replica, use --source-data so the dump records the binary-log coordinates needed to configure replication. On a GTID-enabled source, review the intended behavior of --set-gtid-purged before exporting and importing. Do not accept a default blindly: the correct setting depends on whether the target will join the existing GTID topology or receive an independent copy.
Move several databases or an entire instance carefully
For a defined set of schemas, name each one explicitly with mysqldump --databases db1 db2. This keeps the migration scope visible and includes the statements needed to create and select those databases. For a full logical export, mysqldump --all-databases includes system schemas as well as application data. Review that output before restoring: system tables contain server-level accounts and metadata, and blindly replacing them can overwrite destination-specific administration.
When the source and destination serve different applications, separate dumps are usually easier to validate and roll back than one all-instance file. Keep a written inventory of which schemas were intentionally included and which were excluded.
Move users, passwords, and grants as a separate workstream
Application data and server accounts are different migration objects. The mysql system database contains grant tables, so a dump of db_name alone will not recreate users or privileges. Decide explicitly whether accounts should be recreated, exported and imported, or replaced with a new least-privilege design on the target.

- Export the account and privilege information using an approved administrative procedure appropriate to your MySQL version. Protect this export like a password file.
- Import the selected account data on the destination, checking that authentication plugins, host patterns, and account names are valid there.
- After importing the
mysqldatabase or its grant tables, runmysqladmin flush-privilegesso the server reloads the grants. - Test a real application login and an administrative login separately. Confirm that the application can perform exactly its required operations, not that it has broad privileges.
Do not copy destination-specific users merely because they happen to exist in a full-instance dump. A migration can succeed technically while leaving the application unable to connect because its account is restricted to the old host name or network address.
Bulk-load very large tables with --tab
For large tables, MySQL documents a two-part method that avoids replaying every row as an individual SQL INSERT. On the source, run mysqldump --tab=DUMPDIR db_name. This writes table-definition SQL files and delimited data files into DUMPDIR. Transfer the complete directory securely, preserving the file names and permissions.
- Create the destination database and apply the generated table-definition SQL files.
- Load each corresponding data file with
mysqlimport db_name table-data-file, using the import options required by your delimiters and environment. - Recreate or validate indexes, triggers, routines, and events that are not represented by the data files themselves.
- Compare row counts and workload-appropriate checksums before enabling application writes.
This method can reduce import overhead for large tables, but it produces multiple artifacts that must stay together. It also requires careful permissions because the dump directory contains raw table data.
Use replication when the final outage must be short
Replication does not eliminate the initial copy; it changes when the application is paused. First transfer a consistent source snapshot. A dump made with --source-data can carry the binary-log coordinates needed for the target’s replication setup. On GTID systems, coordinate the dump’s --set-gtid-purged behavior with the existing topology.
- Take and restore the snapshot while the source continues serving according to your consistency plan.
- Configure the destination to receive changes from the source, using the recorded coordinates or the approved GTID procedure.
- Monitor replication until the target has applied the initial snapshot and caught up with ongoing changes.
- Test the application against the target without sending production writes to it.
- At cutover, pause source writes, wait for the final replicated transactions to apply, and verify the target’s position.
- Switch the application connection or DNS to the target, then resume writes there.
Replication adds operational complexity: credentials, binary-log retention, lag monitoring, failure handling, and a decision about whether the old server remains a replica. It is worthwhile when a dump-and-restore outage would exceed your maintenance window.

Consider Clone only for compatible same-series servers
The Clone plugin transfers data directly from a donor to the MySQL instance where the operation starts. MySQL documents the remote syntax as:
CLONE INSTANCE FROM 'user'@'host':port IDENTIFIED BY 'password';
Use Clone when you are provisioning a compatible recipient and have the required clone privileges and network access. The donor and recipient must be in the same MySQL server series, such as compatible 8.4 patch releases. Because Clone transfers the instance at the server level, it is not the right default for moving one schema between unrelated versions or architectures, and it should not replace a logical export when you need selective objects or an auditable SQL file.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteVerify the destination before cutover
Verification should compare the things the application actually depends on, not merely whether the import command returned zero.
- Confirm every intended database, table, view, routine, trigger, and event exists.
- Compare table row counts. For critical workloads, calculate checksums or another application-appropriate content comparison.
- Check character sets and collations at the server, database, table, and connection levels; a mismatch can change sorting or comparison behavior without losing rows.
- Confirm indexes and constraints are present and enabled.
- Validate users, host patterns, authentication plugins, and grants. Run
mysqladmin flush-privilegesafter importing grant tables. - Run the application’s login, read, write, background-job, and reporting paths against the target.
- Check replication status and lag if replication was used, or confirm that no unexpected replication configuration was copied.
- Inspect error logs and compare representative query results before declaring success.
Execute the cutover and retain a rollback path
- Announce the maintenance window and pause scheduled jobs that could write during the switch.
- For a direct dump, stop application writes before the final export or use the consistency strategy that matches your storage engines. For replication, pause writes only after the target has caught up.
- Take a final backup or record the final replication position required by your rollback plan.
- Update the application connection configuration or DNS to the destination.
- Run smoke tests, then watch errors, latency, connection failures, and write results.
- Keep the old server available and unchanged until the agreed rollback period ends. If rollback is required, stop new writes, restore the previous connection, and reconcile any writes made on the destination before reopening the source.
Troubleshoot common migration failures
The target database does not exist
A dump that names only db_name does not necessarily create it. Create the schema first with mysqladmin, or regenerate the dump with --databases db_name so it contains CREATE DATABASE and USE.
Best Value
- Plug-and-play expandability
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
The import stops partway through
Check the target client’s error output, available disk space, permissions, character-set settings, and the dump file’s integrity. For a compressed file, verify that decompression reaches the end. Re-run into a clean database after correcting the cause rather than assuming a partial schema is safe.
Rows are missing or inconsistent
Determine whether non-InnoDB tables, concurrent DDL, or writes outside the chosen snapshot were involved. Repeat the export with a storage-engine-appropriate consistency plan, then compare counts or checksums for the affected tables.
The application cannot log in after the move
Check that its user exists on the target with the correct host restriction, authentication method, and grants. If grant tables were imported, run mysqladmin flush-privileges and test again. Also verify that the application is actually connecting to the new host rather than a stale DNS address.
Replication will not start
Recheck the snapshot coordinates recorded by --source-data, the GTID policy selected with --set-gtid-purged, binary-log availability, and replication credentials. A target that was initialized from an incompatible or incomplete snapshot can require a fresh provisioning cycle.
A practical decision rule
Choose a logical dump when portability, selective migration, and a straightforward audit trail matter most. Add --single-transaction --quick for an InnoDB database that must remain available during export. Choose --tab and mysqlimport when bulk loading large tables is the bottleneck. Build replication into the plan when the final write pause must be brief. Choose Clone only for a compatible same-series instance transfer, with the privileges and server-level scope that operation requires.
