Migrate Guru can move a WordPress site to a new host, but the destination must already have WordPress installed and both sites must be publicly reachable. Install and activate the plugin on the source and destination, copy the destination’s migration key into the source, start the transfer, and test the new site before changing DNS. Make an independent, restorable backup first: Migrate Guru’s WordPress.org listing explicitly says the plugin does not back up your site.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
What you need before starting
A migration is safest when the new environment is ready before any files are copied. Prepare these items first:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- A hosting account at the destination. The account must be able to run the WordPress version, PHP version, database engine, HTTPS certificate and extensions your site needs.
- A domain configured at the destination. You can point the live domain later; for the transfer itself, use the host’s temporary or staging URL if available.
- A clean WordPress installation on the destination. Migrate Guru transfers your existing site into this installation; it does not create the hosting account for you.
- Administrator access to both WordPress dashboards. You install and activate Migrate Guru on both the source and destination sites.
- An independent backup. Export a database backup and a complete copy of the current WordPress files, then verify that the backup can be restored. The plugin listing’s answer to “Does Migrate Guru backup my site?” is “No.”
- A maintenance and testing plan. Keep the old site online until the new site has been checked and the DNS change has completed.
Do not begin with only a domain name and an empty hosting account. The destination WordPress site and its public URL are required for the key-based connection.
Can Migrate Guru reach your destination?
Migrate Guru’s servers need to communicate with both WordPress installations. A destination that opens only on your computer because of a local hosts-file entry is not reachable by those servers and will not work for this workflow.

Use a publicly resolvable temporary, staging or preview URL instead. Protect a staging site with the host’s access controls if necessary, but do not restrict it so completely that Migrate Guru cannot connect. After migration, you can keep the site private while testing and switch the live domain during the final cutover.
The source must also remain reachable for the entire transfer. Do not take it offline, change its firewall rules or enable a maintenance mode that blocks the migration service until the migration page reports completion.

Migrate Guru is intended to reproduce a WordPress installation, not to clone every service attached to a server account. Plan separate work for anything outside WordPress.
| Item | Expected treatment | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| WordPress database | Migrated | Check URLs, options, users, custom post types and plugin data after the transfer. |
| Themes and plugins | Migrated | Confirm that active themes and plugins load under the destination’s PHP and WordPress versions. |
| Media and other uploads | Migrated | Open representative images, downloads and galleries; check permissions and generated sizes. |
| WordPress settings and users | Migrated | Test administrator and ordinary-user logins, roles, permalinks and site settings. |
| Email accounts and stored email | Not migrated | Recreate mailboxes, aliases, forwarding and DNS records with the email provider or host. |
| Unrelated server-level files | Not migrated | Copy custom web-server rules, deployment files, private certificates, system scripts and other account data separately. |
Transactional email is especially easy to overlook. WordPress may be present and working while contact-form notifications, password resets or order messages still use the old SMTP credentials or sender domain. Treat mail delivery as a separate configuration and testing task.
Current size, host and migration limits
The following figures are claims shown in the Migrate Guru/WordPress.org material captured in 2026, not guarantees for every server. Confirm the current limits in the plugin listing before scheduling a critical move.

| Claim | Qualification |
|---|---|
| Up to 200 GB | Advertised maximum site size. The practical result depends on file composition, database load, server resources and connection stability. |
| More than 5,000 supported hosts | A broad compatibility claim, not a promise that every host’s firewall, PHP configuration or security layer will permit a transfer. |
| Five site migrations per user per month | The listing says each of those five sites can be moved unlimited times during the allowance. This is a platform cap and may change. |
| About 1 GB in under 30 minutes | An approximate vendor statement for a site containing files and database data; the listing says timing depends on other factors. |
| More than 200,000 active installations and version 6.72 | Volatile figures displayed by the WordPress.org listing at the time of the 2026 capture. Recheck them rather than treating them as permanent specifications. |
A large site can still be a good candidate, but do not schedule a short outage solely from the advertised time. Millions of small files, a busy database, slow source storage, throttling, security scans and a weak connection can all extend the transfer.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Step-by-step: migrate WordPress with Migrate Guru
1. Create and prepare the destination
- Create the destination hosting account and add the domain you intend to use.
- Install a clean WordPress instance at the destination. Record its administrator URL and credentials.
- Make sure the temporary or staging address opens from a normal external internet connection. If the address is protected, configure access in a way that still permits Migrate Guru’s servers to connect.
- Match essential runtime requirements before copying anything: PHP extensions, database support, writable uploads, HTTPS and any server rules your theme or plugins require.
Do not point production DNS yet. Keeping the destination on a temporary URL lets you test it without sending visitors to an unfinished site.
2. Install Migrate Guru on both sites
- On the source dashboard, go to Plugins > Add New.
- Search for Migrate Guru, install it and select Activate.
- Sign in to the destination WordPress dashboard and repeat the same installation and activation steps.
Installing the plugin only on the old site is not the procedure described for this key-based migration. The destination installation supplies the migration key that authorizes the connection.
3. Copy the destination migration key
- Open Migrate Guru in the destination dashboard.
- Locate the migration screen and copy the displayed migration key exactly.
- Leave the destination available while you move to the source dashboard; the key is used to identify the prepared destination.
If the destination dashboard does not display a key, confirm that the plugin is active there and that you are using an administrator account. Do not guess a key or substitute the destination’s WordPress password.
4. Start the migration from the source
- Open Migrate Guru on the source site.
- Confirm the source site and the destination you intend to use.
- Paste the destination migration key into the requested field.
- Run the connection validation. Correct the destination URL, access restrictions or plugin activation if validation fails.
- Enter an email address for progress and error notifications.
- Review the details, then initiate the migration.
Use an address that someone will monitor during the transfer. Notification mail is useful when a migration takes longer than expected or pauses because of an environmental error.

5. Monitor the transfer
Keep the migration page open until it reports completion. A published host procedure describes Migrate Guru redirecting to a BlogVault page that displays migration progress. The exact screen can change, so follow the status shown by the current plugin version.
- Do not update WordPress, install new plugins, upload a large media batch or alter content on the source while the transfer is running.
- Do not delete the source or remove its database after a success message. It is your rollback copy until DNS and application testing are complete.
- For a large site, watch disk space, database limits, PHP worker limits and security logs on the destination.
If the transfer reports an error, save the message and timestamp before retrying. Repeated retries without addressing a firewall, timeout or storage problem can consume the monthly migration allowance.
6. Test the destination privately
Open the destination through its temporary or staging address and test it as an administrator, a normal visitor and, where relevant, a logged-in customer. The following checks catch the failures that a simple home-page visit will miss.
- Front end: home page, menus, search, archives, custom post types, pagination, feeds and representative old URLs.
- Media: images, responsive sizes, downloadable files, video embeds and galleries.
- Authentication: administrator login, password reset, user roles, registration and any membership or commerce account flow.
- Forms and transactions: submit every important form in a test mode, confirm delivery and verify that spam protection still works.
- Permalinks and redirects: save the permalink settings if needed, test canonical URLs and check redirects from high-traffic legacy paths.
- HTTPS: confirm the certificate covers the final hostname, force HTTPS consistently and remove mixed-content warnings.
- Caching and optimization: purge destination caches, regenerate critical caches and verify that logged-in users do not receive cached private pages.
- Scheduled jobs: run or wait for a known cron task, such as a backup, feed import or publication schedule. Check whether the destination uses system cron or WordPress’s visitor-triggered cron.
- Analytics and integrations: verify analytics, payment gateways, webhooks, storage, search services, social publishing and API credentials.
- Server behavior: inspect error logs, PHP notices, database errors, file permissions and resource usage.
7. Check URLs and serialized settings safely
A host or staging address can remain in content, widgets, plugin options, canonical tags, sitemaps and serialized database values. Search the migrated site for the old hostname and the temporary hostname before going live.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Never perform a blind SQL text replacement across the database: serialized PHP values include length metadata, so changing strings without a serialization-aware method can corrupt settings. If replacements are necessary, use a WordPress-aware tool or procedure that explicitly handles serialized data, take another backup first and review the affected tables. Then regenerate permalinks and clear page, object, CDN and browser caches.

8. Change DNS only after approval
- Lower the DNS record’s TTL in advance if your DNS provider allows it, while remembering that resolvers can retain records beyond the stated TTL.
- Confirm that the destination passes the private checklist and that the final domain is configured in WordPress and the hosting panel.
- Update the domain’s A, AAAA or CNAME records as appropriate for the destination.
- Watch the old and new sites, DNS answers, uptime, access logs and error rates while caches expire.
- Keep the old hosting account and its backup untouched until visitors consistently reach the destination and all critical workflows pass.
DNS propagation is not a single instant. Some visitors can continue reaching the old server while others see the new one, so avoid making content changes during the transition or establish a clear read-only window.

The destination is visible only through a local hosts file
This is unsupported because Migrate Guru’s servers cannot resolve or connect to an address that exists only on your computer. Replace it with a publicly reachable temporary or staging URL, then rerun validation.
The migration key is rejected
- Confirm Migrate Guru is active on the destination and that you copied the current key without extra spaces.
- Check that you pasted it into the source site’s Migrate Guru screen, not another migration form.
- Verify both sites use working HTTPS and that a firewall, basic-auth rule, security plugin or host-level WAF is not blocking the connection.
- Regenerate or recopy the key if the destination screen offers that option, then validate again.
The transfer is slow or times out
Large databases, huge numbers of small files, throttled hosting, low PHP limits and security scans are common causes. Check available disk space and server logs, ask the host whether outbound and inbound connections are restricted, and schedule the move during a quieter period. Do not assume the advertised under-30-minute figure applies to your site.
The site loads but styles or images are missing
Inspect the browser’s network errors for HTTP/HTTPS mismatches, incorrect upload paths, blocked hotlinks or failed CDN references. Confirm that the uploads directory arrived, that the destination can read it and that the final domain—not the temporary hostname—is configured in WordPress. Purge caches after correcting URLs.
Forms or password resets do not arrive
Email accounts and email data are outside the migration. Reconfigure SMTP or the mail service, update sender and DNS authentication records where required, and submit test messages from the destination. Check spam folders and the destination’s mail or application logs.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Cron tasks stopped
Review scheduled-event status and the host’s cron configuration. A destination may disable visitor-triggered cron or require a system cron entry. Recreate the scheduled job according to the destination host’s documented method and run a harmless test task.
A multisite move is not behaving as expected
The listing describes a multisite network installation as becoming network-activated. It excludes moving a multisite subsite to a different domain or into a subdivision of another multisite network. If your plan involves a subsite, a domain change or network restructuring, treat it as a separate migration project and use a method that explicitly supports that topology. Do not assume a normal single-site transfer will preserve it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen Migrate Guru is the wrong fit
Choose another approach when a required condition cannot be met. The decision is usually about access and topology rather than the WordPress dashboard itself.
| Situation | Why it matters | More suitable direction |
|---|---|---|
| Destination is local-only | The migration service cannot reach it. | Use a local export/import or a workflow designed for local development, then deploy to a public host. |
| Multisite subsite must move to another domain or network subdivision | This is listed as unsupported. | Use a multisite-aware procedure and plan domain mapping, tables, users and network settings separately. |
| You need a full server-account clone | Email mailboxes and unrelated server files are not part of the WordPress transfer. | Use the host’s account-level migration service or copy each non-WordPress service independently. |
| You cannot create an independent backup | A failed transfer would leave no verified rollback. | Stop and establish a restorable backup before migrating. |
| The site exceeds the advertised size or monthly allowance | Compatibility and quota claims may not cover your case. | Confirm limits with the current provider or use a staged, manual or host-assisted migration. |
A manual migration generally gives you control over database export, file transfer, URL replacement and cutover timing, but it also makes you responsible for serialization-safe replacements, permissions and rollback. A host-assisted migration can reduce that work but may have its own eligibility rules, downtime window and service limits. Compare destination accessibility, backup coverage, large-site handling, multisite support, serialized-data handling, progress visibility, credentials, host compatibility, migration caps and the final DNS/testing plan before choosing.
Final pre-cutover checklist
- Independent database and file backups have been created and tested.
- Destination WordPress, HTTPS and the final domain are configured.
- Front-end pages, media, logins, roles and forms work on the destination.
- Old URLs, redirects, canonical tags and sitemaps have been checked.
- Temporary-host references and mixed-content warnings are gone.
- Caches, cron jobs, transactional email, analytics and third-party integrations work.
- DNS records and TTLs are documented, and someone is watching logs during propagation.
- The old site remains available for rollback until traffic and uptime confirm the cutover.
With those conditions met, Migrate Guru is a practical way to transfer a single WordPress installation to a public destination without manually copying every database table and upload directory. Its success still depends on the destination being reachable, the limits applying to your site and the testing you perform after the transfer.
