How to Train Your Dragon Isle of Berk Modpack Guide: Install, Configure, and Choose the Right Pack

A complete Isle of Berk guide covering the Java 1.18.2 Forge installation, GeckoLib dependencies, Archipelago Additions configs, Expanded multiplayer requirements, dragon progression and troubleshooting.

The documented Isle of Berk setup is Minecraft Java Edition 1.18.2 running Forge 1.18.2. Install Forge and launch it once, add the Isle of Berk jar plus the matching Forge build of GeckoLib to a clean mods folder, then test a new creative world before opening an established save. Archipelago Additions and Isle of Berk Expanded use that same Minecraft/Forge baseline but add different content and dependencies, so choose one expansion and follow its version requirements exactly.

What the Isle of Berk modpack is

Isle of Berk is a How to Train Your Dragon-themed Minecraft experience built around survival, exploration and dragon companionship. The Modrinth listing describes a Java 1.18.2 Forge client/server pack in which you survive on Berk, gather and hunt, follow a guided questline and work toward finding and taming a first dragon. It is not a Bedrock add-on: the installation guide explicitly states that the mod runs on Minecraft Java Edition only.

There are several ways to play the setting. The core pack is the most focused route through the survival and quest progression. Archipelago Additions is a large content expansion for the base mod. Isle of Berk Expanded is a broader adventure pack with its own world-generation, building, ship, dungeon and multiplayer emphasis. Their dependency lists are not interchangeable, so do not copy every jar from every listing into one folder unless the pack author explicitly documents that combination.

Core Isle of Berk

The base experience is the clearest choice if you want a guided introduction. Its loop is intentionally readable: establish yourself on Berk, collect resources, hunt, advance through quests and pursue your first tame. The pack supports both client and server play on the documented Forge baseline, but the listing does not state a separate RAM budget.

Archipelago Additions

Archipelago Additions extends the base mod with 48 new dragon species and more than 1,000 dragon variants, according to its CurseForge listing. It also adds franchise-themed items, armor, weapons, blocks, plants, entities, structures, dragon abilities and an Isle of Berk resource-pack component. The listing showed 1,606,801 downloads on CurseForge in 2026; that total is a snapshot and can change.

This expansion has a critical installation detail: its supplied modified configuration files must be applied after the first game load but before you create the world. Without those configurations, the new dragons will not spawn. Archipelago Additions is also incompatible with OptiFine.

Isle of Berk Expanded

Expanded is aimed at players who want a larger adventure sandbox. Its CurseForge description lists rugged Terralith terrain, dragon species and hybrids, ruins, Viking villages, dragon eggs and growth, elemental abilities, building, ships, merchants, dungeons, quests and multiplayer. It advertises over 50 dragon species and over 200 dragon variations. The listing showed 32,405 downloads on CurseForge in 2026, another changeable snapshot.

Expanded supplies a server pack, which is useful when a group wants a repeatable dedicated-server installation rather than asking each player to assemble files independently.

Which version should you choose?

Option Dragon scope stated by the listing Main progression and systems Multiplayer and performance notes Important compatibility point
Core Isle of Berk Not stated Survival on Berk, gathering and hunting, guided quests, first-dragon taming Java client/server pack; separate RAM guidance not stated Forge 1.18.2 with matching GeckoLib
Archipelago Additions 48 added species; more than 1,000 variants Additional dragons, abilities, items, armor, weapons, blocks, plants, entities, structures and themed resource-pack changes Server allocation not stated Requires exact dependency versions, modified configs before world creation and no OptiFine
Isle of Berk Expanded More than 50 species; more than 200 variations Terralith terrain, hybrids, ruins, villages, eggs, growth, abilities, building, ships, merchants, dungeons and quests Server pack supplied; published RAM targets for single-player, client and server Use the Expanded files and dependencies as a matched set

Choose the core pack when a compact, quest-led introduction matters most. Choose Archipelago Additions when the size of the dragon roster and variant collection is your priority. Choose Expanded when your group wants exploration, construction, ships and a dedicated multiplayer world, and you can meet its higher memory recommendations.

Requirements before installing

  • Minecraft Java Edition 1.18.2: you must own and be able to launch this edition. The mod does not run on Bedrock Edition.
  • Forge 1.18.2: the documented loader is Forge. Fabric will not work for this setup.
  • Java 17: the installation guide identifies Java 17 as the runtime expected by Minecraft 1.18.2.
  • Matching GeckoLib: use the Forge build for 1.18.2, not a file made for another Minecraft version or loader.
  • A clean profile: a separate launcher profile or game directory prevents unrelated mods, configurations and worlds from hiding a load-order problem.
  • A backup: copy any survival world before testing a new mod set. Never use a first-launch test as the only copy of an important save.

Memory planning for Isle of Berk Expanded

Expanded publishes separate minimum and recommended allocations. These figures are the pack’s stated guidance, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate or tick speed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Use case Minimum allocation Recommended allocation
Single-player 5 GB RAM 8 GB RAM
Client connecting to a server 4 GB RAM 6 GB RAM
Dedicated server 4 GB RAM 10 GB RAM

Leave memory for the operating system and other applications. Assigning the entire physical RAM amount to Java can make the computer less responsive and does not replace fixing a wrong dependency or an incompatible graphics mod.

Install the core Isle of Berk pack

  1. Confirm the game edition. In the official Minecraft launcher, make sure Java Edition 1.18.2 starts normally before installing any mods. If the unmodified game cannot launch, fix that first.
  2. Create an isolated profile. Give the profile its own game directory if your launcher supports that option. This keeps old mods, config files and worlds out of the test.
  3. Install Forge 1.18.2. Select the Forge installer for Minecraft 1.18.2, then launch the new Forge profile once. The first launch creates the directory structure Forge needs.
  4. Close the game after the first Forge launch. Do not copy jars while Minecraft is still running; a running instance can keep files locked or leave an incomplete configuration.
  5. Open the top-level mods folder. Place the Isle of Berk mod jar and the GeckoLib jar built for Forge 1.18.2 directly in this folder. Do not unzip either jar and do not put them inside another folder.
  6. Launch the Forge profile again. Open the in-game Mods screen and verify that both Isle of Berk and GeckoLib appear with the expected version strings. A missing entry means the file is in the wrong directory, has been nested, or is for another loader.
  7. Run a creative test world. Create a new world with no valuable progress at stake. Check that textures render, dragons animate and no Forge error banner appears. Spend enough time loading chunks to expose an obvious client-side failure.
  8. Only then open a survival save. If the test succeeds, make a fresh backup of the survival world and load it. Keep the isolated profile for future troubleshooting.

The clean-world test is more than a formality. A world can retain references to blocks, entities or configurations that are absent from a later installation. Testing first lets you separate a bad mod setup from a damaged or incompatible existing save.

Add Archipelago Additions safely

Install Archipelago Additions only after the base Forge profile is working. The CurseForge requirements specify the following versions:

Component Required version
Forge 40.2.10 or above
GeckoLib 1.18.2-3.0.46
Isle of Berk 1.18.2-1.2.0
Isle of Berk Variant Loader 1.18.2-2.5.6
Isle of Berk Addons 1.18.2-1.1d

Use the exact files named by the expansion listing rather than assuming that the newest file for each project is compatible. A dependency can be “newer” yet still target a different API or loader build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Start from the clean Forge profile that successfully loaded the base mod.
  2. Install the required Variant Loader, Addons and Archipelago files alongside the specified base jar and GeckoLib version.
  3. Launch once and allow the pack to generate its initial configuration files. Do not create the permanent world on this first load.
  4. Close Minecraft, copy the supplied modified configurations into the profile’s configuration location as instructed by the expansion package, and replace only the matching files.
  5. Launch again and create a new test world. The configuration step must occur before world creation; adding it afterward will not retroactively make the new dragons appear in an already-generated world.

Remove OptiFine from this profile. Archipelago Additions identifies it as incompatible, so an apparently unrelated rendering crash may be the result of that conflict rather than a faulty dragon jar.

Set up Isle of Berk Expanded for single-player or a server

Expanded uses the same Java 1.18.2 and Forge-centered foundation, but treat its pack as a complete distribution. Keep the client files and the supplied server pack in separate directories; a dedicated server should not be started from a player’s ordinary client folder.

Single-player setup

  1. Make a new profile or game directory for Expanded.
  2. Install the Forge 1.18.2 profile and launch it once.
  3. Copy the Expanded client files into the profile’s top-level locations without unzipping individual mod jars.
  4. Set the launcher memory to at least the published 5 GB minimum for single-player; 8 GB is the stated recommendation.
  5. Launch a new world and inspect terrain, villages, dragon eggs and animations before importing a survival save.

Dedicated multiplayer setup

  1. Use the supplied server pack as the starting point for the server directory.
  2. Install the server’s Forge 1.18.2 environment and start it once so required folders and configuration files are generated.
  3. Accept the server’s normal first-run requirements, then stop it before changing files or assigning the final world.
  4. Give the server at least 4 GB, with 10 GB recommended by the Expanded listing. Ensure each player has the matching client files and enough client memory.
  5. Test with one player before inviting the whole group. Check that terrain generation, dragon entities, quests and any pack-specific structures load consistently.

Do not mix an Expanded server directory with the Archipelago dependency set. A client and server must agree on the pack’s mods, versions and generated data; a partial mixture can produce missing-content errors even when the game reaches the title screen.

How dragon progression, taming and riding works

The core pack presents taming as a progression goal rather than an immediate creative-mode shortcut. Begin by following the guided questline, gathering and hunting on Berk, and completing the steps that lead you to a first dragon. The listing establishes the destination—finding and taming that first companion—but does not publish a universal keybind or a single food item that applies to every dragon. Use the quest text, item tooltips and the in-game Controls menu for the exact interaction assigned by the installed version.

A reliable first-session workflow

  1. Load a fresh test or survival world and confirm that dragon models and animations render correctly.
  2. Use the opening quests to learn the pack’s resource and hunting loop instead of searching randomly for a rare species.
  3. When the questline points toward a dragon, prepare the required supplies shown by the current quest or item tooltip.
  4. Approach the target and use the interaction indicated by the mod. If the entity refuses the interaction, verify that you are following the quest stage and that the dragon is not a decorative or hostile variant.
  5. After taming, check the Controls menu and the dragon’s available ability information. Riding and elemental abilities are part of the dragon-rider fantasy, but the exact key assignments can differ with the pack’s configuration.

What Expanded adds to that loop

Expanded explicitly supports hatching eggs and raising dragons from hatchlings to mature creatures, then mastering their elemental abilities. Its systems also add hybrids, ruins, Viking villages, ships, merchants and dungeons, so dragon progression can be woven into a longer exploration and building campaign rather than ending after the first tame.

What Archipelago changes

Archipelago’s larger species and variant pool makes identification and collection a bigger part of the game. Its added abilities, structures, equipment and resource-pack changes support a collection-focused playthrough, but the new spawns depend on the modified configurations being installed before world creation.

Troubleshoot crashes, missing dragons and failed launches

Most Isle of Berk failures come from a loader mismatch, a library mismatch, an incorrect file location or a configuration applied at the wrong time. Work through the symptom that matches your screen rather than replacing every jar at once.

Symptom Likely cause Fix
Forge refuses to scan the mods or reports a missing dependency GeckoLib is absent, is a Fabric build, or targets another Minecraft version Remove the wrong file and install the Forge 1.18.2 GeckoLib build required by your selected pack. Recheck the version string in the Mods screen.
The pack does not load under Fabric The documented setup requires Forge Create a Forge 1.18.2 profile and move the pack into that profile’s own mods folder.
Java errors appear before the title screen The runtime is not the Java 17 environment expected by Minecraft 1.18.2 Configure the launcher to use Java 17, then retry in the isolated profile.
Archipelago loads but its new dragons never appear The modified configurations were not installed, or were installed after the world was created Close the game, apply the supplied configs after an initial load and before making a new world. Test in that new world.
Rendering or startup failure occurs with Archipelago and OptiFine OptiFine is explicitly incompatible with the expansion Remove OptiFine and test with the pack’s normal rendering stack.
Mods are invisible in the Mods list Jars were nested, unzipped or copied to a different game directory Close Minecraft, identify the active profile’s game directory and put the intact jars directly in its top-level mods folder.
One computer works but another crashes in multiplayer Clients are using different pack files, versions or Java settings Compare the Mods screen and version strings on both machines, then have every player use the same profile and the server’s matching pack.
World loading becomes unstable after experimenting Unrelated mods, old configs or an existing save are obscuring the original fault Switch to the dedicated troubleshooting profile, remove unrelated content and reproduce the issue in a fresh world before restoring additions one at a time.

A disciplined recovery sequence

  1. Stop changing several variables simultaneously. Write down the exact Forge, Minecraft, GeckoLib and pack versions currently installed.
  2. Move the existing mods and configuration folders out of the test profile rather than deleting your only copy.
  3. Reinstall the documented base profile and confirm that a blank creative world works.
  4. Add the selected expansion’s dependencies in the order stated by its listing, launching between major stages when the instructions require an initial configuration pass.
  5. Use a new world for every configuration change that affects generation or spawning.

Performance and stability choices

Large dragon rosters, animated entities, generated structures and expanded terrain all increase the amount of content the client and server must keep active. Memory allocation is only one part of stability: exact dependency versions, a clean profile and a world created after the correct configuration pass are equally important.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Start with the published minimum only when you are testing. Move toward the recommended allocation if the machine has enough free memory.
  • Keep render distance and simulation distance conservative while checking a new world, especially on a dedicated server.
  • Do not add visual optimization mods until the unmodified pack is stable. In particular, leave OptiFine out of Archipelago profiles.
  • Keep a known-good profile untouched. Experiment in a copied profile so you can return to a working installation without rebuilding it.

The documentation does not provide a universal frame-rate benchmark, so treat the RAM figures as planning guidance rather than a promised performance result.

Recommended pack by player type

For a first dragon-riding playthrough

Use the core Isle of Berk pack. Its guided questline gives you a defined route from survival basics to finding and taming a first dragon without requiring the larger dependency tree of an expansion.

For collectors and franchise-content hunters

Use Archipelago Additions if the stated 48 added species and 1,000-plus variants are more important than a lightweight setup. Plan the configuration step before world creation and accept that OptiFine cannot be part of this profile.

For a long-running group world

Use Isle of Berk Expanded when your group values Terralith landscapes, villages, ships, dungeons, building and a supplied server pack. Plan for the recommended 10 GB server allocation and 6 GB client allocation if your hardware allows it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For limited hardware

Start with the core pack and a clean, small test world. Expanded’s published 5 GB single-player minimum and 8 GB recommendation, plus its 4 GB client and 10 GB server targets, make memory planning more consequential. Do not compensate for insufficient hardware by combining random optimization mods with an unverified dependency set.
