How do I mine coal in Frostpunk 2 Chapter 1?
- Open the district construction view and Frostbreak toward a Shallow Coal Seam.
- Build an Extraction District on the exposed coal deposit.
This is the early coal step in Prima Games’ Chapter 1 walkthrough. Keep the rest of the city’s urgent needs in view as you do it: the chapter also requires shelter and a functioning generator. Extraction Districts work on deposits including coal and oil, and the Frostpunk community wiki says extraction stops once the deposit is depleted. Expanding the district to a new deposit can reactivate it. Check current in-game tooltips if a patch has changed the mechanic.

How do I get to the Old Dreadnought?
Unlock scouting from Old Waystations
Frostbreak toward an Old Waystation at the edge of New London, then build a Logistics District on it. Prima Games identifies two Old Waystations: one southeast of the city core and one on the icy coast to the north. Its guide says two Logistics Districts are needed to raise scouting-team capacity enough to reach the oil destination.

Scout west to the Desolate Coast
Send scouts west from New London to the Desolate Coast. The Old Dreadnought there contains the oil source for Black Gold. Scout Frozen Bay as well: Prima Games’ route uses it to connect the Old Dreadnought back to New London.

How do I extract oil at the Old Dreadnought?
At the colony, Frostbreak to the oil deposits and build Extraction Districts on them. The community wiki lists oil as a valid Extraction District resource and notes that the district stops extracting when its deposit is exhausted. It also reports that placing an Extraction District next to a Housing District generates Squalor, while adjacency to a Food District generates Disease; use current in-game placement tooltips to confirm those effects if your patch differs.
Prima Games also advises removing bodies from the Oil Tombs to obtain the greatest possible oil, and says the choice has no lasting consequences. That is the guide’s account of this narrative decision, not a universal guarantee for every game version.

How do I connect the oil supply to New London?
On the Frostland map, create a trail linking the Old Dreadnought to New London through regions you have already scouted. Prima Games says trails can join existing routes, so you do not necessarily need a separate direct route. The guide also describes Skyways as an upgraded trail option for increasing resource flow.

How much oil do I need to transfer for Black Gold?
Select the Old Dreadnought colony and use its resource-transfer controls to send at least 75 Oil output to New London. Prima Games’ 2024 walkthrough gives that as the Black Gold objective threshold. If output is short, the guide suggests emergency shifts at the Extraction Districts. Once the objective completes, reconsider the transfer allocation in light of the colony’s own needs rather than leaving the full output assigned automatically.
