Players placed Scriptures into its Ritual Rites slots to choose a reward category, narrow the focus, and then charged an active Ritual of Desire by completing activities and defeating enemies. It is no longer usable: Bungie deprecated the Tome and its connected items when Year 8 began on July 15, 2025.
What the Tome of Want did
The Tome let players shape a reward from Episode: Heresy activities rather than simply collect an unspecified drop. Its main mechanic was the Ritual of Desire: Scriptures set the reward focus, and activity progress charged the ritual until it delivered one reward. Some Scripture combinations also led to an Exotic upgrade material instead of an ordinary focused reward.

- Complete Episode: Heresy’s opening questline.
- Visit Eris Morn’s apartment in the HELM and interact with the Path of Resolve Shaping Slab.
- Reach Shaping Slab reputation level 2 to obtain the Tome of Want.
How Scriptures shaped a Ritual of Desire
Choose a broad reward category
In the Tome’s Ritual Rites section, the first Scripture slot set a broad reward category. A second, more specialized Scripture could further influence or narrow the reward. In practical terms, the first Scripture established the general target and the second refined it.

Activate the ritual and receive its reward
An Exotic Amorphous Scripture could activate a Ritual of Desire. The ritual ended after it granted one reward. Consuming an Amorphous Scripture in Ritual Rites could instead produce an Exotic upgrade material, with the material determined by the other Scripture in use. A Crumbling Scripture could further narrow the selected reward type.
Find the required Scriptures
The archived in-game instructions listed Episode activity chests and Destroyed Sigil Stones as sources of Amorphous Scriptures. Crumbling Scriptures could also be obtained by turning in Metastasized Essentia at the Shaping Slab.

Once a Ritual of Desire was active, progress came from activity completions and combat. The archived instructions listed these ways to charge it:

- Defeat powerful combatants in Episode activities.
- Defeat other Guardians.
What Essence of Desire did
GameSpot’s February 7, 2025 guide describes Essence of Desire as a third Tome slot. Spending two Essence of Desire arranged three seasonal rewards to appear at the end of the next Nether activity. The guide says players obtained Essence by turning in stacks of 10 Metastasized Essentia to the Taken altar in Eris’s apartment. These were instructions for the then-active Episode system, not a current farming route.
Can you still use the Tome of Want?
No. Bungie’s Year 8 transition notice says the transition began July 15, 2025, and lists the Tome of Want, Scriptures, Metastasized Essentia, Essence of Desire, and Sigil Shards among deprecated items. The Tome’s rituals and related currencies should therefore be treated as historical Episode: Heresy mechanics, not as currently available systems. The sources cited here do not establish a present-day replacement for its reward-focusing features.
