Use GStreamer’s audiomixer to combine the prerecorded video’s audio with a separate music track. Keep them on separate inputs so you can lower the music independently, route the video picture to its own encoder branch, then mux encoded audio and video before sending the stream to YouTube. The pipeline below is a design skeleton, not a tested, copy-and-run command: decoder pad routing, plugins, codecs and music looping depend on your files and GStreamer installation.
How the audio and video paths fit together
A prerecorded video with background music needs two parallel media paths. Decode the video file and send its picture to the video encoder. Send its decoded audio to one audiomixer input, and decode the separate music file into another input. Lower the music input’s gain at the mixer, then convert and encode the mixed audio. Finally, mux the encoded audio and video into FLV for the network sink.
audiomixer combines raw audio streams and synchronizes inputs. It can handle live inputs as well as file playback. Each input pad has mute and volume properties; the documented volume range is 0.0 to 10.0. Because the mixer adds signals and clamps the result to the representable range, excessive combined peaks can clip. See the GStreamer audiomixer documentation.
- Video branch: file source → demux/decode → raw video → video encoder.
- Original-audio branch: decoded video audio → conversion/resampling → mixer input.
- Music branch: music file → parse/decode → conversion/resampling → mixer input.
- Output: mixed raw audio → conversion/resampling → audio encoder; encoded audio and video → FLV muxer → RTMP or RTMPS sink.
Build the pipeline around your files
1. Identify the streams and installed elements
Check the video and music files’ codecs, stream layout, sample rates, channel counts and durations, and confirm that the required GStreamer source, parser, decoder, encoder and muxer plugins are installed. The exact elements depend on those details. filesrc reads a file, while decodebin can discover and decode its streams; its output pads are dynamic, so an application must connect the desired audio and video pads to the correct branches. 2. Create separate branches for picture and sound
Route decoded video frames to the video encoder; do not send the picture through the audio mixer. Keep the video’s audio and the music as independent raw-audio branches until they reach separate mixer pads. Put queues on independently paced branches in a practical application, and use audio conversion and resampling where source formats differ.
If the music is WAV, wavparse can parse it to raw or compressed audio. Other supported formats may need a decoder bin to autoplug demuxing and decoding elements. See wavparse and the GStreamer gst-launch examples.

3. Set the mixer’s output format deliberately
audiomixer accepts raw audio and can convert formats as needed, but the sample rate must match what downstream requires or the first configured mixer pad. If the encoder needs a particular format, add conversion/resampling and a caps filter after the mixer to request it. Verify that the negotiated caps match the encoder rather than assuming all source files share a usable format.
4. Lower only the music input
Set the music branch’s mixer-pad volume property to reduce the music without also reducing dialogue, narration or other original video audio. There is no universal correct gain value: source loudness and peaks differ. Listen to representative quiet and loud passages, inspect meters if your pipeline has them, and adjust until the background sits below the foreground audio without clipping the combined signal.

5. Encode, mux and connect to YouTube
Encode the mixed audio and the video separately, then connect both encoded streams to an FLV muxer before the network sink. GStreamer’s rtmpsink accepts FLV content, uses librtmp and supports RTMP URL parameters; its documentation shows the muxer-to-sink arrangement at rtmpsink. Prefer RTMPS when your selected sink supports it. Get the ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room; do not guess or publish the key. YouTube explains encrypted ingestion in Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
For a prototype, gst-launch-1.0 can help check whether individual elements link. A real application is more suitable once you need dynamic decoder-pad routing, bus error handling, controlled shutdown or looping. The gst-launch-1.0 reference points to application code and gst_parse_launch() for more involved control.

Decide what happens at the end of the music file
A finite music file does not automatically loop forever just because it feeds a mixer. If the video continues beyond the track, the music branch may end while the rest of the pipeline keeps running. If music must repeat, implement looping in the application or source design and check for a gap or discontinuity where playback returns to the start. The exact solution depends on your pipeline and source; there is no universal loop command established for this setup.

YouTube’s current encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video codecs, frame rates up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. Use Live Control Room and the current YouTube live encoder settings to confirm the accepted configuration for your stream.

- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Stereo audio: YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps for stereo audio.
- Video bitrate: Match the recommendation to codec, resolution and frame rate. For example, the cited H.264 table lists 5 Mbps recommended at 1080p30; at 1080p60 it lists 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended. Those values are not universal settings for other codecs or formats.
- Upload capacity: Leave a 20% upload-bandwidth margin, as recommended in YouTube Streaming tips.
These are YouTube recommendations, not guaranteed acceptance thresholds. Use a constant bitrate (CBR) configuration where applicable, test with movement and audio similar to the planned stream, preview before going live, and monitor stream health during broadcast.
Copyright and content checks before you go live
Only use music you have the rights or permission to stream on YouTube. A track being available to download, or being mixed quietly under narration, does not by itself establish permission. Consider the rights for both the music and the prerecorded video, and check YouTube’s current policies and any notices shown in Live Control Room. Mixing audio does not avoid copyright claims or make unauthorized music safe to broadcast.
Troubleshoot common pipeline problems
- No video reaches the output: Confirm that the video decoder’s dynamic raw-video pad is linked to the video branch and that the chosen encoder and muxer are installed. Check application bus errors and caps negotiation.
- Video works, but there is no sound: Verify that the intended decoded audio pad is linked to an audio mixer input, and that the mixed audio reaches the audio encoder and muxer. Check whether the source has an audio stream at all.
- The music is too loud or masks speech: Reduce the music input pad’s
volume, not the output level for the whole mix. Recheck quiet and loud passages. - The mix distorts or clips: Combined peaks may exceed the representable range. Lower one or both mixer inputs and inspect levels; reducing only the final encoder bitrate will not fix audio clipping.
- Negotiation or sample-rate errors: Convert/resample before the mixer as needed and set output caps after it to match the encoder’s requirements. Check the actual negotiated sample rate and channel layout.
- The music stops before the video: The music file has reached its end. Add looping in the source or application logic and inspect the loop boundary for a pause or discontinuity.
- YouTube reports an unstable or unhealthy stream: Confirm the selected codec, keyframe interval, audio settings and bitrate against YouTube’s current guidance. Test the full path, check available upload capacity, preserve the recommended bandwidth margin and monitor stream health.
- The RTMP sink rejects data or cannot connect: Confirm that encoded audio and video are muxed as FLV, the sink supports the selected RTMP/RTMPS mode, and the ingest URL and stream key were copied from Live Control Room.
