This guide covers the original Watch_Dogs (2014) on PC—not Watch Dogs 2. The current workflow described by Nexus Mods uses the NexusTools loader, often alongside Vortex; the right install steps depend on the mod’s files and instructions.
Before you start: confirm the game and find its executable
Make sure you have the original PC version of Watch_Dogs installed. The NexusTools installer asks you to select Watch_Dogs.exe in the game’s installation directory. These instructions do not apply to Watch Dogs 2.

Back up any files a mod asks you to replace, and read the mod’s page before downloading. Check its requirements, supported game version, file layout, and update history. Nexus Mods’ catalogue includes different kinds of mods and upload dates; the available listings do not establish that every mod works with every game build. These are community tools and downloads, not an official Ubisoft modding workflow.
Choose an installation method

Install a mod with Vortex

Install Vortex and add the Watch_Dogs extension. The extension listing says it supports Steam, Epic, and Ubisoft editions; if your edition is not detected, you may need to select its installation location manually. Read the extension instructions.

In Vortex, choose the original Watch_Dogs installation and confirm that the detected game folder contains
Watch_Dogs.exe. -
Download the mod using its manager button if the page offers one. The button passes files to the app for supported games, but an unavailable button can mean the game is unsupported by an integrating manager or the mod author disabled manager downloads. In that case, use the mod page’s manual download option if available, then import or place the files as instructed.

Deploy the mod in Vortex. The extension describes different destinations based on the archive’s structure:
.dat/.fatfiles go indata_win64/mods; archives containingbinordata_win64folders are installed to the game root; other mods are also placed in the root, with a fallback notification. These are extension-specific rules, so use the individual mod’s instructions if they differ.Rank #2

If the extension prompts you to finish installing a
.dat/.fatmod, run NexusTools from the notification or Vortex’s Tools tab. The extension says this handoff completes that type of installation.

If the mod’s instructions or installer calls for NexusTools to finish deployment, open NexusTools and follow the on-screen steps. Do not run the old patch merger unless the mod specifically requires that legacy utility.
Manual download and the legacy installer
When a manager button is missing
A missing manager button does not by itself mean a mod cannot be installed. Nexus Mods’ app documentation says the button may be absent because the game is not supported by an integrating manager or because the author disabled manager downloads. You can download a file manually and import it into the app, but where Watch_Dogs files belong still depends on the mod author’s directions and, where used, the extension’s placement rules.
Why the old Watch Dogs Mod Installer is different
The Watch Dogs Mod Installer is a separate utility from NexusTools. Its 2014 listing describes extracting the utility to a folder without special characters, selecting the game directory, selecting a mod’s patch.fat or loose files, and clicking Install to merge the changes into patch.dat/patch.fat. Because that listing was last updated 24 September 2014, use this route only when a particular mod explicitly calls for it and its current instructions confirm the process.
Troubleshooting installation problems

The installer cannot find the game: Browse to the directory containing the original game’s

Vortex does not detect your edition: The extension lists Steam, Epic, and Ubisoft versions, and says other editions may require manually selecting the game location. Check the extension’s current instructions.

A mod is deployed but does not load: Recheck the mod’s required loader, file layout, and game-version notes. For a
.dat/.fatmod managed through the extension, confirm you completed the NexusTools step from the notification or Tools tab. -
The manager-download option is missing: Download manually if the mod author provides a file, then follow the mod-specific instructions; importing a file into the app does not determine its Watch_Dogs installation destination.

You are following old instructions: Confirm that the mod specifically requires the 2014 Watch Dogs Mod Installer. It is not the same tool as NexusTools, and its patch-merging method should not be substituted into a current NexusTools workflow.
