The reliable setup is more than starting a process: protect the Redis credentials, keep the metrics listener off the public internet, make the exporter reachable from Prometheus, and test the failure cases you expect to operate.

How the monitoring chain works
Redis Exporter is an HTTP service that translates Redis or Valkey state into metrics in Prometheus format. It is not the time-series database and it does not draw dashboards. The usual Linux VPS arrangement has four roles:
- Redis: the database process on the VPS.
- Redis Exporter: a small service that authenticates to Redis, runs the required queries, and serves a metrics endpoint.
- Prometheus: the collector and time-series store. It periodically scrapes the exporter.
- Grafana or another integration: the visualization and alerting layer that reads Prometheus data.
Prometheus calls exporters an instrumentation bridge for systems that cannot expose Prometheus metrics directly. That separation means Redis can remain unchanged while Prometheus receives a consistent scrape target.

Choose the placement and trust boundaries first
Decide where each component will run before installing anything. The choices affect firewall rules, latency, credential storage, and recovery.

Use a dedicated, unprivileged service account. Give the exporter only the filesystem and network access it needs, and keep Redis itself bound according to your existing security design. The exporter’s HTTP listener should be reachable by Prometheus but not by arbitrary internet clients.

- A running standalone Redis or Valkey instance and its connection address, normally a host name or IP plus port.
- Redis authentication details if the server requires them. ACL deployments may use a username and password; password-only deployments use the server’s password mechanism.
- Root or equivalent administrative access to install a service, create a service account, and adjust the firewall.
- A Prometheus server with a network path to the exporter’s metrics listener.
- For a source build, a supported Go toolchain for the exporter release. For a container, a runtime such as Docker.
Check the exporter release notes before choosing a version. Supported Redis/Valkey versions, flags, and metric coverage can change, so do not assume that an option from one release exists unchanged in another.
Install Redis Exporter
Option 1: use a verified release binary
Download the release that matches your CPU architecture from the project’s official distribution channel, verify its checksum when one is published, and pin that version. Extract the executable into a system path such as /usr/local/bin. A generic shell sequence is:

/usr/local/bin/redis_exporter --helpReplace the version token with the exact release you selected; do not leave a floating “latest” artifact in a production deployment. The final command confirms that the binary starts and shows the flags supported by that build.
Option 2: build from source
Clone the official repository at a tagged release, install the Go version required by that release, and build in a controlled environment. The exact build targets can differ, so use the repository’s instructions and then place the resulting executable in the same protected path:

/usr/local/bin/redis_exporter --helpA source build is not automatically more secure. Record the source tag, Go toolchain version, and build process so you can reproduce or roll back it later.

Option 3: run the published container image
The project publishes an oliver006/redis_exporter image through common container registries. Pin an image tag rather than relying on an unqualified latest tag. A basic invocation is:

--redis.addr=redis://127.0.0.1:6379--network host is the documented example when Redis runs on the VPS host and the exporter runs in Docker. Without a route from the container to the host’s Redis address, the exporter will start but fail every Redis query. If Redis is in another container or on another private host, attach the exporter to the appropriate private network instead and use that reachable address.
Give the exporter a safe Redis connection
The exporter accepts a Redis URI and also supports documented username/password settings. A password-file option is available for exporter connections. Choose one method and protect it consistently.

Redis URI
A URI expresses the destination and, where supported by your Redis deployment, authentication in one value:
redis_exporter --redis.addr=redis://127.0.0.1:6379If the URI contains credentials, treat the entire value as a secret. Do not paste it into a shell session that is recorded, a public issue, or a world-readable unit file.
Username and password settings
ACL-enabled Redis deployments can use the exporter’s documented username and password flags. Run redis_exporter --help for the exact flag spelling in your pinned release, because option names can change between versions. Keep the values out of shell history and process listings where possible.
Password file
For a long-running service, a root-readable password file is usually easier to audit than a credential embedded in a command line. Create the file with restrictive ownership and permissions, then pass its path using the release’s documented password-file option:

# Configure the exporter with the password-file flag shown by redis_exporter --helpUse a dedicated service group only if your operating-system policy requires it; otherwise make the file readable solely by the exporter account. Rotate the Redis credential and update the file as an atomic, permission-preserving change.
Run it as a systemd service
A service manager gives the exporter a defined user, restart behavior, boot ordering, and a place to review logs. Create a service account and directories first:

WantedBy=multi-user.targetIf Prometheus is on another host, bind the listener to the VPS’s private interface instead of loopback and restrict that port in the firewall. Do not bind it to every public interface unless you have an explicit, authenticated and encrypted access design.
Load and start the unit:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now redis-exporter
sudo systemctl status redis-exporter
sudo journalctl -u redis-exporter -eA healthy process is not proof of a healthy Redis connection. The next checks must include the metrics output and Prometheus’s target status.
Expose only the metrics path Prometheus needs
The exporter provides an HTTP metrics endpoint. On a same-host installation, keep it on 127.0.0.1 and have a local Prometheus scrape it. For a separate Prometheus server, bind to a private address and allow inbound traffic to the exporter port only from the Prometheus host or its security group.
Do not publish the endpoint through a public reverse proxy simply because it is convenient. Metrics can reveal memory consumption, client counts, replication state, command patterns, and persistence timing. They also create a reachable service that should not be exposed unnecessarily.

Confirm local output before opening a firewall rule:
curl --fail http://127.0.0.1:9121/metrics | headIf you receive connection errors, check that systemd is running, that the listener address matches the interface you queried, and that another process is not already using the port. If the endpoint responds but Redis-specific values are absent or exporter logs report authentication failures, fix the Redis connection rather than the firewall.
Configure Prometheus to scrape the exporter
Add the exporter address to Prometheus’s scrape_configs. The target is the exporter, not Redis:

- <vps-private-address>:9121Use 127.0.0.1:9121 when Prometheus runs on the same machine. Use the exporter’s private address when Prometheus is remote. Keep the target label meaningful if you monitor more than one VPS.
Reload Prometheus using the reload method configured by your deployment, then open its targets page and confirm that the target is UP. A down target can mean a blocked firewall, wrong address, a listener bound only to loopback, a crashed exporter, or a container network that cannot reach the host. A target marked up only proves that Prometheus fetched HTTP successfully; inspect the returned metrics and exporter logs for Redis-level errors.

Start with signals that answer “is Redis reachable and becoming unhealthy?” before adding workload-specific detail. Metric names and labels vary by exporter release, so inspect /metrics and the release documentation rather than copying a dashboard blindly.
- Exporter health and Redis reachability: distinguish a failed scrape from an exporter that is reachable but cannot authenticate or query Redis.
- Memory pressure: graph used memory alongside the configured limit or the host’s available memory. Alerting should account for your eviction policy and workload.
- Command activity: track command rate and changes in the mix of operations to spot traffic spikes or an unexpected client.
- Connected clients: watch sustained growth, sudden drops, and proximity to the configured client limit.
- Persistence: monitor save activity, background-save duration, and errors so a disk or fork problem is visible before a restart.
- Replication: track replica link state, lag, and role changes when replication is part of the design.
- Latency: use the latency-related series exposed by your exporter version and correlate them with CPU, disk, and command load.
There is no universal numeric threshold for these alerts. A cache, a queue, and a session store have different normal ranges. Establish a baseline during representative traffic, then alert on sustained deviation and service impact rather than a single arbitrary number.

Grafana can read the Prometheus data for dashboards, and Prometheus-compatible integrations can deliver notifications. Keep dashboard definitions and alert rules in version control so a replacement VPS can reproduce the same monitoring.

Test the failure paths deliberately
Monitoring is useful only when it tells you what happened and leads to a documented response. Test each condition in a maintenance window and record the expected alert, log message, and recovery action.

Do not describe these as guarantees: they are operational tests you perform in your environment. Capture timestamps and screenshots or query output in the runbook so the on-call response is repeatable.
Troubleshoot the common “it is not working” cases
The exporter will not start
- Run the exact binary with
--helpto catch an unsupported flag or malformed value. - Check the systemd journal for permission errors, a missing executable, or a port already in use.
- Confirm the service account can read the password file and that the file contains only the intended credential.
The endpoint is up but Redis metrics are missing
- Test the Redis address from the exporter’s network namespace, not only from your interactive shell.
- Check username, password, ACL permissions, and URI syntax.
- Read exporter logs for authentication, timeout, or unsupported-command errors.
Prometheus marks the target down
- Compare the scrape address with the exporter’s actual bind address.
- Check host and cloud firewalls for the exporter port, allowing only the Prometheus source.
- If the exporter is containerized, verify that the Prometheus route reaches the container listener and that the exporter route reaches Redis.
Graphs are empty after a restart
Prometheus stores samples in its own time-series database; the exporter does not retain historical data. Check that Prometheus reloaded the scrape configuration, that the target label did not change unexpectedly, and that the exporter is returning current samples. A restart can create a gap; it cannot reconstruct samples that were never collected.
Updates, credentials, and rollback
Pin the exporter binary, source tag, or container image used in production. Before upgrading, read the release notes for flag changes, Redis/Valkey compatibility, metric renames, and security fixes. Keep the previous artifact so you can roll back if Prometheus rules or dashboards depend on a changed metric.

Apply the same discipline to Redis itself. Upgrading Redis can alter commands, persistence behavior, and latency; upgrading the exporter can alter how those changes are represented. After either upgrade, run --help, check the endpoint, inspect the Prometheus target, and exercise at least one alert path.
Store credentials in a root-readable configuration file or a secret store, rotate them under a planned change, and avoid passing secrets in shell history, process arguments, container environment dumps, or public logs. If a credential was exposed, treat it as compromised and rotate it at Redis as well as in the exporter configuration.
Standalone Redis versus Redis Software metrics
This guide describes the standalone redis_exporter workflow for a Redis or Valkey server. Redis Software has a separate, native v2 Prometheus metrics endpoint documented for Redis Software 8.0. That endpoint is a different product path: do not assume that a standalone exporter’s flags, target address, or metric set applies to Redis Software. Identify which Redis product you operate before writing the scrape job and alert rules.
