That reading can help you describe what was happening when a game crashed, but Valve does not publish a Steam Deck RAM threshold that predicts a crash. Treat memory use as a clue, then troubleshoot methodically: update and restart the Deck, check third-party apps, and, if one game is affected, investigate its compatibility and graphics settings.
What the Steam Deck RAM reading tells you
Valve’s performance-monitor documentation describes the RAM figure as the amount of physical system memory currently used, shown against the device’s total system memory. It is a snapshot of memory use, not a crash warning or a diagnosis of why a game stopped working.

The RAM figure is not the same thing as a separate pool of dedicated video memory. The Steam Deck uses integrated graphics, and some system RAM can be shared with graphics. The monitor’s RAM section concerns system memory; it should not be read as a direct measure of a game’s total graphics-memory demand.
Valve also explains that when memory is exhausted, the operating system may move memory contents from RAM to slower disk-based swap space. That mechanism can reduce performance. It does not establish a particular Steam Deck reading at which a game will crash, nor does it prove that swapping caused a specific slowdown or crash.

How to check memory while reproducing a crash
- Open the Steam in-game performance monitor. Do this while the affected game is running. Valve’s monitor guidance supports reading its RAM information, but does not establish a particular menu path or a Deck-specific crash threshold.
- Observe a stable period first. Note the RAM reading while the game is running normally, if it is possible to do so. Then observe it again during the moments before the issue. A comparison can make your report more useful than a single reading, but it still does not establish cause.
- Record the context. Write down the game, what you were doing in it, whether the crash can be repeated, and the RAM reading you observed. Describe the result as a correlation—for example, “memory use was high shortly before the crash”—rather than claiming the reading proves why the crash occurred.
- Retest after each troubleshooting change. If you update the system, disable a third-party app, change compatibility settings, or lower graphics settings, change one thing at a time and try to reproduce the same situation. That makes it easier to tell whether a particular change affected the problem.
There is no official Deck-specific RAM cutoff in Valve’s monitor guidance that separates safe use from a crash. A high reading alone cannot tell you whether memory exhaustion occurred. Conversely, a crash still warrants the software and game-compatibility checks below even if the reading did not look close to the device’s total memory.
First steps for any game crash
Install available system updates and restart
Valve’s Steam Deck software troubleshooting guidance recommends installing available system updates and restarting the device when investigating system instability. The menu path it gives is Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates. Restart from the Software Updates section or use Steam > Power > Restart. Apply available updates, restart, and then test the affected game again.
Exit or disable third-party Desktop Mode apps
Valve also recommends exiting or disabling third-party applications installed through Desktop Mode when investigating application instability. Close those apps, or disable them if they launch automatically, and retest. If the problem changes, that is useful evidence to include in your notes; it does not by itself identify which app or interaction was responsible.

Valve says this software troubleshooting guidance applies to both Steam Deck LCD and OLED models. These steps are a sensible starting point whether the crash seems confined to one game or you have not yet established a pattern.
If the problem appears limited to one Steam game
Check the game’s Deck compatibility information
Look up the game’s Steam Deck Verified status and its compatibility notes. The status and notes can help you assess whether the game has known Deck-specific limitations. They are a starting point for investigation, not a guarantee that a particular crash has a single known cause.
Try a Steam Play compatibility tool when appropriate
Valve suggests trying or forcing a Steam Play compatibility tool, such as the latest Proton version for the game, when appropriate. The available choice and whether it helps can vary by game. Change the compatibility tool for the affected title, then retest the same part of the game. If the issue worsens or remains unchanged, record that result and return to the prior setting before trying another change.

Lower graphics settings and test again
Valve also suggests trying lower graphics settings. Reduce settings within the game, then repeat the same activity that previously led to the crash. Lowering settings is a test, not proof that RAM was the cause: the result may show that a configuration change affects stability without revealing the underlying mechanism.
Make one compatibility or graphics change at a time. If several options are changed together, a different result will be harder to interpret. Keep a short record of the original setting, the change, and whether the crash still occurred.
Use the pattern to choose the next step
| What you observe | What to try next | What the result can tell you |
|---|---|---|
| One game crashes, while other use appears unaffected | Check that game’s Deck Verified status and compatibility notes; test an appropriate Steam Play compatibility tool and lower graphics settings, one change at a time. | Whether a game-specific compatibility or settings change affects the issue. It does not make a RAM reading a diagnosis. |
| The issue occurs while third-party apps installed through Desktop Mode are running | Exit or disable those apps and retest. | Whether the issue changes when those apps are not active. A changed result is a clue to report, not conclusive proof about a particular app. |
| Crashes or instability are not limited to one game | Install available SteamOS updates, restart, and exit or disable third-party Desktop Mode apps. If trouble persists, consult SteamOS/Steam Deck discussions or contact Steam Support. | Whether the basic system-software checks affect the broader problem, and whether support should guide further steps. |
| A crash coincides with a high RAM reading | Record the reading and circumstances, then continue the relevant software and game-specific checks. | A useful observation about timing, not a published threshold or confirmation of cause. |
When to consider SteamOS recovery
Recovery is not a first-line fix for a crash in one game. Start with updates, a restart, third-party app checks, and—when the trouble is game-specific—compatibility information and graphics settings. If the issue appears system-wide or Valve Support directs you toward recovery, understand the data effect of the particular recovery option before proceeding.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Valve distinguishes rolling back to a previous known-good SteamOS version from a factory reset or an erase-user-data action. The rollback option is described as retaining user data. Factory-reset or erase-user-data actions clear local data. These are not interchangeable choices: do not select an option that erases data unless you intend to do so and have accounted for anything stored locally.
Escalate persistent problems with useful details
If the steps above do not resolve the issue, Valve suggests looking through SteamOS and Steam Deck discussions or contacting Steam Support. A concise, factual report helps others understand what you have already tested.

State observations without overstating them. “The game crashed after memory use rose” reports what you saw. “The RAM reading caused the crash” claims a cause that the monitor reading alone cannot establish.
