Before you enter the lobby
Bring a reasonably capable weapon and a set of skills you can use reliably. The exam includes PvP, so select a server with good ping rather than treating latency as an afterthought. Voice coordination with a friend is especially useful on Zevil Island, although the guide’s recommendations are practical advice rather than controlled testing.

Open the Main Menu and enter the Hunter Exam lobby to begin. Once a stage starts, read its objective rather than assuming that speed or eliminations alone determine success.
What should I prepare before attempting the exam?
The walkthrough recommends a decent weapon and skills, but it does not name a required weapon, minimum level, build, or entry fee. Bring tools you already handle comfortably rather than delaying the exam to chase an unconfirmed setup. The same applies to the race: the skateboard is useful, but the walkthrough also describes slide-jumping as a no-skateboard option.
Because two exam stages involve fighting players, connection quality matters more there than in the race. A low-ping server can make it easier to read and answer attacks; it does not guarantee a win. Stage 1: finish the Stamina Race
The first exam stage is a timed obstacle course. The stated requirement is to finish before the timer runs out, not to place first. That distinction lets you prioritize a clean route and recover from mistakes instead of taking unnecessary risks for a record time.
Read the boulder warnings
Red telegraphs appear before boulders fall. Watch the ground and the route ahead, wait for the warning to resolve when necessary, and move through the opening rather than running blindly into the impact area. A hit can cost enough momentum to turn a successful run into a timeout.
Choose your movement aid
The in-game skateboard is the straightforward speed aid. If you do not have one equipped or would rather avoid it, slide-jumping can preserve forward momentum without a skateboard. The available walkthrough presents both as workable approaches but does not provide controlled timing tests, so choose the technique you can execute consistently.
In practical terms, the skateboard is the convenience choice if you have it and are comfortable using it. Slide-jumping avoids dependence on that item and is the option the walkthrough describes for retaining momentum without it. Neither method is established as universally faster, so there is no substantiated best-in-slot choice between them.
An auto-run stamina behavior is also described as a bug in the walkthrough. Because early-access bugs can be patched, do not build your attempt around that behavior. Treat normal stamina management and obstacle reading as the dependable plan.

Race checklist
- Confirm the exam has started and note the time limit.
- Scan for red boulder telegraphs before committing to a narrow section.

Stage 2: clear Trick Tower
Trick Tower has two linked sections: a trap-filled labyrinth and a fight against an NPC. Clearing the maze does not finish the stage; you must also win the combat encounter.
Trigger side-wall traps safely
For the side-wall traps described in the walkthrough, step onto the highlighted pressure plate and immediately back away. This baits the trap while you remain outside its path. After the mechanism resets, cross the opening. Rushing across before the reset is the common way to convert a correct trigger into avoidable damage.
Use the maze’s movement options
Wall-jumping can help where the layout rewards vertical movement or makes a direct floor route dangerous. It is a positioning tool, not a replacement for reading the trap indicators. Approach each plate deliberately, trigger it from a safe distance, and wait for the cycle to finish.
Prepare for the NPC fight
The combat section is a practical check of your defensive timing. Practice blocks, parries and dodges instead of relying exclusively on damage skills. The walkthrough recommends M1 and uppercut combinations alongside your skills, giving you a simple close-range sequence while you learn the opponent’s reactions.
When the NPC uses the fire-tornado attack, dodge backward to create space. Staying in front of the attack or attempting to trade through it is less forgiving than disengaging and re-entering after the threat passes. Keep your camera and movement aligned so a backward dodge does not carry you into another hazard.
Trick Tower checklist
- Find the highlighted pressure plate for a side-wall trap.
- Step on it, back away, and wait for the trap to reset.
- Use wall-jumps only where they improve your route through the labyrinth.
- In the NPC fight, rotate blocks, parries and dodges with M1/uppercut attacks and skills.
- Dodge backward when the fire-tornado attack begins.
Stage 3: survive Zevil Island
Zevil Island is the exam’s PvP survival round. You need two badges at the finish: your own badge and one taken from another player by gripping them. Holding only your original badge is not enough to clear the requirement.
Get the second badge, then change priorities
Look for an opportunity to grip an opponent and take the second badge. Once both badges are secured, survival becomes the priority. The walkthrough advises avoiding unnecessary fights until the timer ends rather than continuing to hunt players and exposing yourself to a comeback.

Make latency part of your plan
Parry timing is sensitive to connection quality. On a low-ping server, isolate a fight when you have a favorable matchup and can read the opponent’s attacks. If the exchange feels delayed, disengage and look for a safer opportunity instead of forcing a timing-dependent duel.
Friends can coordinate positions and call out threats over voice chat. However, do not assume a friend can simply hand you a free clear: the objective still requires an opponent’s badge, and the final tournament can match friends against one another.
Zevil Island checklist
- Protect your own badge.
- Grip another player to obtain a second badge.
- Confirm that both badges are credited before taking additional risks.
- Once qualified, disengage where possible and survive until the timer expires.
Stage 4: win the final 1v1 tournament
The last exam stage is a one-on-one match against another player in the lobby. Winning this bout awards the Hunter’s License and completes the Hunter Exam, which in turn enables the Nen activation quest.
What to expect
The opponent is another participant, so their weapon, skills and timing may differ from the NPC in Trick Tower. Carry the defensive habits you practiced there: block attacks you can read, parry when your timing is stable, and dodge rather than trading into a dangerous skill.
If you entered with a friend, be prepared for the possibility that the bracket matches you against each other. Treat the match as a normal exam requirement; there is no indication that a party relationship bypasses the duel.
Do not confuse reaching the final stage with finishing the exam. The documented reward is tied to winning the 1v1: the victory awards the Hunter’s License, and that license is the progression gate for the next quest. If the Nen quest is not available, first verify that the tournament result registered and that you received the license.
How do I activate Nen after earning the license?
After the tournament, use the active quest tracker to locate “Activate Nen.” Press P to open the tracker and follow its direction. The Port Town Librarian points you toward Rohan, who is waiting in the Nen Cave on Wayfarer Island.

Find Rohan in the Nen Cave
- Press P and select or follow the “Activate Nen” quest.
- Travel to Wayfarer Island.
- Enter the Nen Cave and speak with Rohan.
If the quest marker does not seem to identify the cave directly, speak with the Port Town Librarian first; the walkthrough describes the librarian as the NPC who directs you to Rohan.

Obtain and use the Meditation Mat
- Buy a Meditation Mat from a Port Town merchant if you do not already own one.
- Place the mat in a usable location.
- Approach it and press T to meditate.
- Complete the keyboard-letter quick-time event that appears.

Completing the letter sequence grants Nen experience according to the walkthrough. Do not leave the interaction before the sequence finishes, or the meditation step may not register.
Return to Rohan
Go back to Rohan after the meditation event. He unlocks a randomly rolled Nen ability rather than letting you select a guaranteed category. The same interaction opens access to Nen techniques and the skill tree.

Is Nen unlocked as soon as I meditate?
