On Linux, mount a remote directory with sshfs [email protected]:/remote/path ~/mnt/remote, then unmount it with fusermount3 -u ~/mnt/remote. SSHFS uses the SSH server’s SFTP subsystem, so a separate SSHFS daemon normally is not needed. macOS and FreeBSD use umount ~/mnt/remote instead.

What SSHFS does
SSHFS is a FUSE filesystem client that presents a directory on another computer as a local mount. It carries filesystem operations through SSH’s SFTP subsystem. The libfuse SSHFS documentation defines it simply: “SSHFS allows you to mount a remote filesystem using SFTP.”

Most SSH servers support and enable SFTP by default, although an administrator can disable it or restrict an account’s access. SSH supplies the connection and authentication; FUSE supplies the local mount interface.
Once mounted, commands such as ls, cp, editors and scripts can address the remote files through an ordinary local path. The files remain on the remote host: the mount is a network view of that directory, not a copy or synchronization job.

Requirements and limits
- An SSH-capable client and credentials that can log in to the remote host.
- An SFTP subsystem enabled on that host, with the remote account permitted to enter the requested directory.
- SSHFS and a working FUSE implementation installed on the local computer.
- A local mountpoint directory owned by the user who will run SSHFS.
The project recommends running SSHFS as a regular user. Using root merely to make a mount work can create ownership and security problems, and it does not fix a failed SSH login or an inaccessible remote path.
If your operating system provides an SSHFS package, install it through that system’s package manager. A source build requires libfuse 3.1.0 or newer (or a compatible libfuse3 implementation), GLib development headers, Meson 0.38 or newer, and Ninja. Package names and installation commands vary by distribution, so check the package manager and the operating system’s FUSE integration before compiling.
Mount a remote directory on Linux
1. Confirm ordinary SSH access first
SSHFS uses the same host name, user name, network path and authentication mechanisms as SSH. Test those independently before troubleshooting the mount layer:
ssh [email protected]
If the server or account is intended for file transfer only, test SFTP instead:
sftp [email protected]
Resolve host-key prompts, passwords, private-key selection and network reachability here. A failed SSH login cannot be repaired by changing an SSHFS option.
2. Create a mountpoint you own
Choose an empty local directory. The example below creates ~/mnt/remote under your home directory:

mkdir -p ~/mnt/remote
Check that the directory belongs to the account that will run SSHFS. A mountpoint does not need to be under your home directory, but a regular user must have permission to access it.
3. Run the essential mount command
sshfs [email protected]:/remote/path ~/mnt/remote
The documented form is:
sshfs [user@]host:[dir] mountpoint [options]
In this command, [email protected] identifies the remote account and host, /remote/path is the directory to expose, and ~/mnt/remote is the local directory where it appears. SSHFS prompts for an SSH password when needed and follows normal SSH configuration and key authentication.
If you omit the user name, SSHFS uses your local user name. If you omit the remote directory after the colon, it mounts the remote account’s home directory:
sshfs example.com: ~/mnt/remote
Use an SSHFS option when the connection differs from the SSH default. For example, a server listening on a non-default port can be mounted with:
sshfs -o port=PORT [email protected]:/remote/path ~/mnt/remote
Replace PORT with the server’s actual SSH port. Other connection details can normally be placed in your SSH configuration and then reused by referring to the configured host name.
4. Verify the mount
Read the directory and create a harmless test file only if your remote account is supposed to have write access:

ls -la ~/mnt/remote
printf 'SSHFS testn' > ~/mnt/remote/sshfs-test.txt
Remove the test file afterward if it is not needed. You can now use the mounted path with normal file commands, editors or scripts. A command that succeeds locally still runs with the remote account’s authority and changes data on the remote system.
Unmount SSHFS safely
Linux
On Linux, unmount the path with the FUSE utility:
fusermount3 -u ~/mnt/remote
Run the command as the user who mounted the filesystem, and ensure no shell or application is currently using the mountpoint. After it succeeds, the local directory remains, but its remote contents are no longer visible there.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →macOS and FreeBSD
On macOS or FreeBSD, the documented unmount command is:
umount ~/mnt/remote
The mount syntax is broadly the same, but FUSE packaging and integration differ by operating system. Follow the local SSHFS/FUSE package documentation if the command is unavailable or if the mount was created through a graphical utility.
If unmounting does not return
An SSHFS mount can become unresponsive when the underlying SSH connection or network path is unhealthy. First address the connection problem rather than repeatedly killing mount processes. Check whether the server is reachable, whether ordinary SSH still works, and whether a shell or process has a current working directory inside the mount. Once the underlying condition clears, retry the platform-appropriate unmount command.
Understand permissions and multi-user access
SSHFS’s default behavior is easy to misunderstand: local file-permission checks are ignored by default. A user who can access the mounted filesystem can perform operations allowed to the remote account. The remote account, its server-side permissions and the requested directory therefore determine what can actually be read or changed.

Add -o default_permissions when you want the local kernel to perform its normal permission checks as well:
sshfs -o default_permissions [email protected]:/remote/path ~/mnt/remote
By default, only the user who mounted the filesystem can access it locally. To make a mount available to other local users, use -o allow_other deliberately:
sshfs -o allow_other,default_permissions [email protected]:/remote/path ~/mnt/remote
The SSHFS manual recommends pairing allow_other with default_permissions. Broadening local visibility does not grant those users additional rights on the server; every remote operation still occurs through the SSH account used by the mount. It does, however, let another local process read or modify data through that account’s remote authority, so use it only when that sharing model is intentional.
If access is denied, check both sides: the local user must be able to reach the mountpoint, and the remote account must be authorized for the requested directory and operation.

Use SSH configuration and keys without changing the mount model
SSHFS follows normal SSH configuration and key authentication. A key that works with ssh [email protected] can normally be used by SSHFS through the same SSH configuration. This avoids putting a password in a mount command and lets you centralize host names, ports and identity selection in your regular SSH setup.
Do not treat a successful mount as proof that every remote operation is safe. Review the host key when connecting to a new server, protect private keys, and consider the remote account’s write permissions before pointing automated tools at the mount.

Persistent mounts with /etc/fstab
The SSHFS manual documents describing persistent mounts in /etc/fstab with sshfs as the filesystem type. fuse.sshfs remains available for backward compatibility.
Interactive mounting should work before you add an fstab entry. A persistent entry changes the failure mode: boot or mount operations may run before the network is ready, and unattended authentication must be designed carefully. A password prompt that works in an interactive terminal is not automatically suitable during boot.
Plan a persistent mount around these checks:
- Use a remote host and path that have already been tested interactively.
- Ensure the local mountpoint exists and has the intended owner.
- Decide how SSH keys or other credentials will be made available without exposing them in plain text.
- Account for the remote host being offline, slow or unreachable when the system starts.
- Test both mounting and unmounting after editing
/etc/fstab, rather than waiting for the next reboot to discover an error.
Troubleshoot an SSHFS mount methodically
“Permission denied” before the mount appears
- Run
ssh [email protected]with the same user and host to separate SSH authentication from SSHFS behavior. - Confirm that the remote account can access the exact directory in the command.
- Check the spelling and capitalization of the remote path.
- Confirm that the local mountpoint is writable by the account running SSHFS.
If ordinary SSH works but the mount fails, verify that the server exposes SFTP. An SSH account can be configured for shell access, transfer-only access or restricted subsystems, and SSHFS requires SFTP.
The mountpoint looks empty
First determine whether it is actually mounted. Check the command’s output and inspect the path with ordinary file tools. If the mount command was pointed at the wrong remote directory, SSHFS may have mounted a valid but unexpected location. If no mount is present, revisit the host, user, path and authentication test rather than changing local permissions randomly.
Another local user cannot open the mount
This is the default behavior, not necessarily a failed mount. Review whether that user should have access at all. If sharing is required, add allow_other and pair it with default_permissions, then verify the local FUSE policy and the remote account’s intended authority.
Files can be listed but not changed
Listing and writing are separate permissions. The remote account may have read access without write access to the directory or file, or the server may apply an additional restriction. Test the same operation through a direct SFTP session and inspect remote ownership and permissions with an administrator who controls that host.

The mount hangs during a command
Investigate the SSH and network path: connectivity, server availability, firewalls, name resolution and authentication timeouts. Avoid repeatedly terminating the SSHFS process while applications still have files open. After the connection is healthy, unmount with fusermount3 -u on Linux or umount on macOS and FreeBSD.
SSHFS versus other ways to reach remote files
SSHFS is most useful when software needs a path that looks local while the data remains on a remote server. It is not automatically the fastest or most resilient choice for every workload. The official material does not provide a reliable benchmark table, so throughput and latency should be measured with the files, network and application you actually use.
| Decision point | SSHFS | Transfer client | Separate file-sharing service |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transport and encryption | SSH with the SFTP subsystem | Depends on the client and protocol | Depends on the service and protocol |
| Server prerequisite | Existing SSH access with SFTP enabled; no SSHFS-specific daemon normally required | A server endpoint supported by the client | A separately deployed file-sharing service |
| Local integration | FUSE mount presented as a directory | Files are moved through the client interface | Service-specific mount, web or client integration |
| Permission model | Remote account authority by default; optional local checks with default_permissions |
Operations occur explicitly through the client | Defined by that service’s accounts and sharing rules |
| Interactive behavior | Convenient path-based access, with network latency on remote operations | Explicit transfers rather than transparent file access | Varies with the service and client |
| Interruption handling | Active paths can stall or fail when SSH or the network disappears | Clients may offer transfer retry or resume features | Varies by service and client |
| Setup complexity | Install SSHFS/FUSE, create a mountpoint and use an existing SSH account | Install and configure the transfer client | Deploy or obtain the service, then configure users and clients |
Choose SSHFS when application compatibility with a normal directory matters more than transparent recovery from outages. Choose an explicit transfer workflow when you need deliberate copies, resumable jobs or a clean separation between local and remote storage. Choose a separate sharing service when its collaboration, policy or identity features justify operating another server component.
Quick Recap
A practical operating checklist
- Install SSHFS and FUSE using your operating system’s supported package method.
- Verify ordinary SSH or SFTP login with the exact host and account.
- Create an empty mountpoint owned by the regular mounting user.
- Run
sshfs [user@]host:[dir] mountpoint, adding options such as-o port=PORTonly when needed. - Check the mounted directory before running scripts or editors against it.
- Remember that writes affect the remote host through the remote account.
- Use
default_permissionswhen local permission checks are required. - Use
allow_otheronly for intentional multi-user access, preferably together withdefault_permissions. - Unmount with
fusermount3 -uon Linux andumounton macOS or FreeBSD. - Only after interactive operation is reliable, consider an
/etc/fstabentry and its boot-time credential and network implications.
